Dragon Ball Z: The Greatest Son Goku Legend (in English) is a fighting game released only in Japan. The game sets sometime before the Buu Saga, as Gohan is telling Goten the stories of their deceased father Goku.
The controls are some of the worst a fighting game could have. Basically you can only hold one of the two buttons (or both to recharge your KI) and hope for the best. You can choose attack, defence, KI Charge and later in the game KI attack (the little box under the character's picture is showing you the selected), however you can attack even if you selected KI Charge but that would produce little or no damage to the enemy. After you drain your enemy's energy (the large bar) you get to go to the Moves selection screen. I usualy used the Kamehameha because it's the most effective, but sometimes nothing, if the enemy is clearly in defense as he can defend himself by raising his stance bar. Sometimes nothing can be done at all and you have to loose energy as a cutscene is about to start. When you drain your enemy's Life bar the fight is over.

It's almost like watching an unpublished episode of the anime.
Believe it or not, this game has dedicated "what-if?" cutscenes where the villains win, if Goku runs out of HP. Most if not all opponents have dedicated "Game Over" cutscenes, which is a rarity in Dragon Ball games. The cutscenes all end with Gohan telling the player to try again.
There were many what if type games particularly in snes. The goku densetsu did many interesting things. Such as if goku refused to let go of raditz tail, raditz would cut it and move away. picolo would accidentally kill only goku.

Like movies back in the days, they put so much heart and soul into this game that I really though I was watching a series?! It's that epic even though I can't understand it?!!! The old games are the true soul of the DBZ franchise which something missing from the newer crud...
Pretty much all today's games are half assed and littered with microtransactions devs just lost their touch in making games that they cant make anything compareable to the classics atleast there are some fans out there who can recreate these masterpeices

Man the intro is so damn beautiful and the gimmick of the game is cute as hell man.
I had a feeling something like this had to exist, and it's as good as I'd imagined. If a lot of these PC-E games came west, we'd probably be rerelreasing them on PS4 and Xbox in compilations

The only DBZ game to be completely show accurate with it's fighting style... we've got all the modern technology and fancy graphics but not a single game managed to do what this game did.

Yeah, the Turbografx 16 failed. But not the PC Engine, it was pretty famous in Japan, and this game came out for the PC Engine only, not Turbografx 16
The TG16 failed in the U.S. for several reasons. Bad marketing was one. Bonk should have been the flagship game/mascot from day one, not keith courage. Had games like Dracula X, Street Fighter 2, Fatal Fury and other imports been brought to America, NEC probably would've done a lot better.
The PC Engine only failed in the west, and in fact, the CD in Japan kept receiving games until about 1997.
It failed in the west probably due to the lack of third party support and not being advertised well enough as the SNES, NES and Genesis which left the PC Engine in the dust. To make matters worse most of the PC Engine CD games had hilariously bad voice acting that is still talked about today. It's not to say it doesn't have any good games but rather it had lackluster sales in the US when compared to the NES,SNES and Genesis.
These cutscenes are awesome!
Sadly, some of those VAs listed in the credits at the end (Chiako Otsuka, Takeshi Aono, Kohei Miyauchi, Daisuke Gori, and now Hiromi Tsuru) are now officially dead.

What an odd way to phrase it.

From my understanding it seems like that one for the Playstation and Saturn. Player 1 is represented by the color red and player 2 is blue. The bar fills up to one side as the players attack each other. When it fills up with one color, that player is then able to attack and inflict damage to the other. The blue bar above the player's life bar is your energy, which depletes as you move and attack. As for what happens when specials are performed, I have no rationale, but the rest seems accurate.
Technically both games (this and The Legend for the Sega Saturn and PlayStation) are from the same "Idainaru Densetsu" sub-series.

What a game! This and Saturn DBZ the legend version are the two greatest DB games of all time.
Legends destroys this game. This game has no real fighting inputs or combos...just hold down the attack button and everything that plays out is automatic. On legends you have total control of your attacks.

I literally imported a PC Engine Duo to play this haha, I think this game rules so much. Do you know what those 7 tiles at the selection screen actually mean? I've just been going through the game with a trail and error mindset. But it would be great to know what I was actually doing.
Pancheezey Games Wow, you were so right to do so! The effort they put in making these scenes is incredible!! Also the fighting looks like the best i'v seen in all of the dbz games. I just don't understand why they are so lazy. Put some english dubs and translate those fckin unreadable signs. Shouldn't take too long. At least it would sell like mad, but no. Dumbest shit ever. At least bring it out later on GBA or something... All these budokai shit fighting games arn't allowed to carry the dbz name in my opinion. Lots of people think they are good but they really are not. 3D graphics and diffirent colours of the moves... and thats just the beginning of the horror.

Yep, Ryusei Nakao. He's awesome as Freeza, not to mention as Cooler in the two movies. Haven't heard his take on Darkwing Duck, though. Similarly, I wish there was some way I might be able to hear Masako Nozawa's take on Doug (Nickelodeon and later Disney cartoon).

I checked the Wikipedia for this game and it didn’t listed Gohan SS2 as a playable character(although it was only temporary since he isn’t playable in the actual gameplay)

The whole combat system and story of the game seems to be like that of an actual DBZ episode which is why everything seems odd when fighting or doing anything else in game.
I like the way this looks, but I think it would have been better to have had it play like the Butouden games and Bu Yu Retsuden. The PC Engine could have handled that.
Nice visuals. How do play tho? The "gameplay" looks like it's been reduced to "press 1 to skip to next scene" and more like an interactive DB episode than an actual game tbh.

Why can't Bandai re-release this game as a bonus with the purchase of one of their new games? Or re-release some of the SNES Dragonball Z games that were never released in America! That would be so awesome and sales would be so high because the older games were always closely based on the show!

Here's a question: What if FUNimation was made earlier and started voice acting earlier, starting with the original Dragon Ball first, and continued with Z but with NO American music composer, (Faulconer for example), and dubbed this game? Would this game be the first one FUNimation dubbed? Would Stephanie Nadolny and Sean Schemmel be their respective versions of Goku (and both Kid and Younger Teen Gohan for Nadolny) in this game?
Removing the Faulconer tracks is like removing the original dub script. The reason it worked so well in the US is because of those two things. There's a reason people still have a love for DBZ, and lack it for DBZ Kai. While some people enjoy Kai for the updated script (mostly purists), the general market doesn't really care one way or the other and in most notable cases prefers the characters are they were originally scripted. Nothing more obvious than Goku's change from someone who liked fighting but wasn't stupid, to literally forgetting what was told to him 5 minutes prior. Just have a look around, it's one of the largest complaints you'll find from people who enjoyed DBZ, and have watched SUPER.
