    You've given me so many solid arguments to help fight my impulses. Your message from a previous video about "just because you want it doesn't mean you get to have it" has stopped me SO many times since then! You've taught me to simply tell myself no and it has been so so helpful!

    I definitely used to do this! I called it "buying things for the experience" but as you say, often we end up having another object lying around that we don't use. Which is why I have so much now to declutter 🙄 I've been trying to replace this activity by getting reviews of things I'm interested in, if someone i know has it I might be able to try theirs. That seems to satisfy the curiosity part of it at least. Two months into my low buy and still feel like it's going well! Thanks for the videos they help 🙂

      Yes, I know what you mean! The buying for experience can be extra incentivizing because you're not just buying a thing you're doing something too. Thanks for sharing your perspective!

    I really appreciate how you articulated the difference between trying to try and a well researched purchase that didn’t happen to work out.
    My rule for my own purchases falls very much in line with this. It has to do with the order of events. For instance, did I think “hmmm I really wish I had a brown lipstick” and THEN go and research the best one for my needs, or did I see a beautiful brown lipstick first and then afterwards evaluate if it would be a good addition to my collection? If the initial want comes from me, like when I wish I had a certain color while doing my makeup, then it is generally not a try to try purchase. If the initial want comes from seeing the product before the need for it manifested in my life, then it’s generally a try to try. I hope that made sense.

      @shawnaripari  Před 2 lety +2

      Yes, that made a lot of sense and I really like the distinction you made! I love that! I agree, most times, if not every time, I saw something and then wanted it it's never something important or filling a hole.

    Used this mindset today after watching your video yesterday!! I saw a cream contour on sale that I had considered buying in the past but because I already have 2 that I use and love I really don’t need to just try another for no reason! 🙌🏻

    My Feeling , the frenzy for years with make up CZcamsrs who get paid to sell make up and push products (not all of them do) however the ones who do get paid or sent free PRODUCTS they sell it. They say, it’s OH MY GOODNESS YOU HAVE TO BUY IT . THAT STUFF SELLS. It’s like you are getting a friends recommendation for a product. It’s true everyone is accountable for their actions what they say, do and purchase. However that’s why advertising has been the foundation when they need to push a product. It’s a mindset we all need to be aware of and be very conscious of what you purchase. I’ve been watching CZcams for years when I was caught up in the makeup frenzy. If I saw someone use it and they said WOW YOU HAVE TO GET THIS, I WOULD most of the time buy it. Years later with more makeup than I’ll ever use in my lifetime I’ve stopped the frenzy. I still buy a few products here and there however NOTHING like it did when I was in that frenzy.

    This is soo real and definitely something I am guilty of. Drugstore products get me the most, it's almost too easy to stroll by the makeup aisle while grocery shopping and just toss something that looks cute into my cart without thinking too much, just like you described with the shampoo. I am now trying to remind myself that makeup expires and most of these products that I've bought "just to try" are probably going to go bad before I can use them. Do I really need to try out that new formula when I already have more lipsticks than I'll ever be able to use up before they expire? Definitely not lol. Thanks for always bringing the honest truth and genuinely thoughtful critiques of social narratives that we have around beauty and consumerism. You always get me thinking deeper about my own habits!

      Wow Emily, this was such a nice comment! I hear you on going to the grocery store and just throwing something into the cart. I used to do this all the time too. It sounds like you're cultivating some great habits!

    This video has helped me further put into words a lot of the frustrations I've been having about watching beauty content for a while now. One creator whom I've watched for long time now constantly talks about how much she loves trying new products. She just posted a video where she talked about going through ebbs and flows in her makeup enjoyment, and interestingly enough, she described her periods of makeup enjoyment as being new excited to buy new products and try new things. Nothing about using what she already owned, rediscovering old products she forgot about in her collection, etc. It's pretty crazy that for so many of us, enjoying makeup equates to buying makeup and vice versa when it really shouldn't be like that!

    I feel called out... LOL jk. Girl, I needed this video. I am bad about trying out new things from Dollar Tree just because they are only $1 or $1.25 then if I don't like them they end up decluttered/given to someone else or something. Yikeees. Same goes with Bath and Body Works fragrances. 😬

    Hi, I have been watching your videos for quite some time. Just my 2 cents. I feel we are all very curious human beings. We like to try new things :) it's human nature and I don't think it is a bad thing. But before I try new things, I would do a ton of research online and CZcams. Are reviews good? Is the price something I can afford long term, do I think it suits my skin type? If any of these questions answers negatively, I would talk myself out of buying. It's not easy. I would also procrastinate on bringing new items into my collection unless there is a good sale and I have been researching for that item for some time. I am quite a minimalist and dun like too many stuff at home. So I usually buy when I run out. I would never tell others about the internal questions that go thru my mind. Cos my frens will say, just do it and u will add on another resistance. At the end of the day, set yourself a monthly budget to spend. U need to be honest to yourself. We are girls and we love buying things. But spending beyond our means and sanity is important.

    I usually really love your videos, but I didn't get this one. I agree that "trying to try" is a thing and that it can lead to problematic consumption habits, but how is it different from exploring your tastes by trying new products/shades/textures? Imo insisting on abcollection that doesn't make you feel beautiful, because you're either unfamiliar with your preferences or with what the market has to offer, is just as unpleasant and empty.
    Maybe you addressed this later in the video? If so I think it would've made sense to touch on it earlier. I gave up at the midway point because this contention kept bothering me lol.

    • @shawnaripari
      @shawnaripari  Před 2 lety +2

      I do talk about that difference later in the video with couple of examples. In my opinion it's different or can lead to a path that causes problems if the foundation for a purchase is the try to try vs I need a new shampoo so I think I'll try this new one. I don't think trying something new is inherently wrong or that it should mean not owning products that make you feel beautiful of happy. The latter is a message you'd rarely find on this channel. If you'd like to hear my full thoughts you can watch the rest of the video, however if the try to try is something that you value then keep doing what work for you 👍

    For me the try to try is a bit like buying make up due to someone else telling me to try a product or hype vs buying a product because I want it. For example I bought Etude House palettes I fell in love with seeing them in a video. But it wasn't anything the creator said : it was just the colours & what I could see of the performance and me knowing the brand. I even bought products after negative reviews in a video based on what my eyes could see and the limited factual info vs opinion I could get. Loads of make up I bought due to reviews /what people said and feeling I should see if I like it or maybe should broaden my collection. if a product only gets my attention due to hype or another person advertising it to me... That's usually a buy I regret. Its not the same of course as being minimalist and low buy but focusing only on your taste & your real likes reduce the amounts one buys. if we know our taste well and our brands it's easier to buy products we use and appreciate.

    • @shawnaripari
      @shawnaripari  Před 2 lety

      This is a great perspective! I agree that I've also found the main reason I've bought something because of the try to try is because of hype or some external factors.
      How interesting that you've noticed this pattern of why you buy palettes, especially after negative reviews. It's a good habit to catch!

  • @2headed

    Wait why is it called try to try (like a sample) and not buy to try?

    • @shawnaripari
      @shawnaripari  Před rokem

      I called it trying to try because you're trying something for the sake of trying it and the only thought that went into buying, owning, or really having the thing in the first place was just to "try it." You don't necessarily have to buy something for that thought process to be in play but I'm not hung up on the name. If you'd like to call it a buy to try and that makes more sense for you please do!
