Stop don't tip them off SMH
i rememder waching you back when you had a high voice
can you do one about monster hunter? maybe monster hunter Tri for example?
You should've compared them to Kaiju from Pacific Rim and Godzilla monsters. Or maybe "If you held a soda can in your hand, you'd be that size compared to this".
You forgot 2 important creatures: the squidshark and the void chelicerate.
frozen leviathan: im massive
gargantuan fossil: pathetic
Im just glad its a fossil
Just imagine seeing the Gargauntuan Leviathan in the ocean. Just put a camera under the water and just sees THAT thing swimming around. I doubt even a thermonuclear warhead would kill that thing. It was eat Mosasaurs for a snack.
@@derwolfgaming7775 its half the map so yeah that would be terrifying

@@derwolfgaming7775 Depends. A thermonuclear warhead might be able to kill it, or it could just make it more powerful, like Godzilla or some shit.
I think the developers knew that the creatures would look smaller in first person, so they made the models bigger, which is why fish you can hold are so much smaller in your hand than when you're looking at them
ya possibly, i mean how the hell can a reaper hold us with its mandibles if we are literally tiny 🤷🏻♂️
Pretty much, perspective in the game is terrible. So the actual models used aren't representative of how big they are supposed to be, how big they are is how big they look.
@@samuelhutchinson2463 the fact that things in water look smaller than on land is actually a real thing due to how light bends underwater, it's called the capillary effect.
it's not just the light bending. it also screws up our depth perception. It's like looking at the car 2 blocks from you and saying "damn, can you imagine a human can fit in this? It looks like a toy!"
Except you are several blocks away diagonally up and out from most of these models when you see them, with no horizon line to assess perspective properly. And you are looking through a visor the size of your torso :D
That's what I was thinking
I wish you actually got the sense of scale of the creatures when playing the game
in vr with max fov its pretty damn good
@@ernahuskofan3616 yeah but in PC they look small, the camera in game is big making them look more smaller
Yeah I know
Yeah the POV and Cam placement is off
Change the fov
One of the game design classes I took, long ago, we were taught when making a first person game was to make the objects 1.5 times bigger than they are to help maintain a correct sense of size for the player. That could be why these animals appear bigger than they should when manipulating the camera in third person.
I am assuming this is to compensate for the inability to convey the human eye's depth perception through a flat screen?
Being real,
His intro when he says “My name is AwesomeCrunch.” All I can hear is “god dy everyby my name is ahticrrnch,”
hehehe
Same
Also it's possible that alot of the smaller models are double their actual size that they are supposed to be so that they can be seen better in a one person perspective. Cause let's face it, if the fish we can hold were left at the same size as they reduce to in our hand, we'd not see them until they were RIGHT in our face and making grabbing them nearly impossible in the game.
Now the Leviathans and such are probably full scale, as well, we can definitely see them. Notice how you said at about medium sized creatures (rockpuncher, stalker, penwings, ect) they seemed right in size? I think they and all sizes up are at the proper proportions in game. But I think any of the models of fish that we can grab and hold we should measure based on the size in our hands for actually size rather than in water as those are probably doubled for visual reasons in game.
But that's my 2¢, I could be wildly wrong about that 😂
I can't explain why the shrimpshark tries to clamp us though. Maybe just it's natural response to opening it's jaw? Baleen whales wouldn't have to open their mouths all the way to filter feed, but they do just because, so maybe it's just something it does while feeding?
I agree with the fact that the smaller fish are scaled up so we can visually see them easier in game as they are super tiny and almost impossible to catch without struggling a little, it would be a nightmare trying to catch them if they were actually THAT small, it be just like catching fish in real life with your hands. Everything from medium size up seems to be accurate overall, so i think what you said is completely correct and accurate as i thought the same, and about the Chelicerate using it's mandibles to catch Robin, well actually i think that's a pretty normal reaction, it's as if it's trapping it's prey to only go in 1 direction and that's towards it's mouth, fish don't have hands to defend or hold back but they do have maneuverability and speed. Which makes it easy for the fish to turn around and get out or dodge, the mandibles help trap the fish (like medium sized), tho since Robin can fight back and hold it open it tends to struggle keeping hold of her but still doing damage and exhausting her. Many fish in real life have a certain jaw to trap fish and even some plants are built to have a one way in and no way out type structure and or trap.
Yeah.
I aint reading that
I think the biggest factor for non-VR subnautica and misjudging scale is (in addition to the lack of depth perception) the fact that you are floating around. When you are on land in an FPS, your point of reference is the eye-height of your character. This allows you to roughly measure up different objects. When you are swimming you lack the known reference point of your height from the ground. This combined with the lack of depth perception is what makes it hard to realize how big things actually are.
First person perspective can definitely make it difficult to get the scale of things, when you're playing ark running around on the beach with dilos they look pretty small, but when you knock one out and go into third person you realize they're just as big as you are, and when you get into the water there are some gigantic creatures, they look big from a distance, but then you slap a saddle on one and see your tiny little character clinging onto it's back, then you realize just how freakishly huge they really are
D i l d o s
Dilos
Yeah, just like how the argy looks like a bigger than normal bird, but when you go in third person it's gigantic

Play this game in virtual reality. The sense of scale is simply insane. The first time I made the cyclops submarine was just mind blowing. And encountering leviathan creatures with that same sense of scale is terrifying haha!
9:30 Robin isn't holding the mandibles, she's *standing* in them, like in a split-postition, in the animation.
8:39 ..................i'm gonna cry, this game man....
I'm pretty sure the models are just scaled up to fit the fov, making the fish you can hold in your hand look the same size when they're swimming around.
I get the same effect irl with some things lol. I don't always realize how big some things are. Like street lights.
I don’t think they would expect you to be into free cam, I feel like it was just perspective and if they made them any smaller they would look too small from your actual perspective.
why would they do that
@@ImaPizzaK so when you’re in first person everything looks normal sized
@@bsyo2665 i don't think that's actually what happened here tho

@@drippyrose1k388 What the hell is wrong with you? We were having a friendly conversation, and you came in and acted as if you were the tough one here.

It's so weird to know that there's an animation for the Snow Stalker attacking you which does like 30 - 50 damage but in reality Robin would be crushed under the weight of the massive bear-like stalker.

Ahh Subnautica, a beautifully crafted game that I'll never be able to complete because of sheer terror at the size of these lads.
hehehe
For some reason the 3d underwater movement makes the creatures look smaller too. I remember in the first game an ampeel followed me into a portal cave, and it looked about 10 times bigger when I was standing on the ground.
intro: good day everybody, my name is osmkrch
I feel like this is why there was some slight push to make creatures bigger, because you don't see their true scale while in first person like you do in concept or freecam. Even the leviathans, while huge, and we *know* they're huge, lose their sense of scale. The Reaper Leviathan, for example, was honestly a bit disappointing to see once I got over the initial "Danger!!!" response. It doesn't look as big as it is.
Maybe part of it is us subconsciously thinking "Ah, I can see the entire fish when up close, so it must only be the size of my head." But that's not necessarily true. There's a bit of depth-of-field missing which makes it difficult to determine accurate sizes because we're looking at a flat screen.
4:40 Snowstalkers are that big???? I thought they were like.. the size of a jaguar or lion, maybe bear or something, not the size of a direbear with a crocodile mouth!
I'm pretty sure the disproportion is due to FOV and perspective. That is, these creatures must be much larger than the player's model so that in the eyes of the player they look like the creators wanted. I don't remember which building it is, but it seems to me that the Greek parthenon has columns wider at the top than at the bottom. So that the person standing at the bottom think that the whole column is the same width.
So glad the shadow leviathan is larger than we thought, doesn’t make the game terrifying at all :D
My inner avgeek was happy when you got all the plane names right
I think it would be cool to see the creatures in this game next to creatures from real life. For example the shark earlier in the video next to a great white would really be telling as to how big it is. Edit: i hadn’t finished the video, the leviathan comparisons really put things into perspective.
Glad the comparisons worked! :)
@@Awesomecrunch the fact below zero still has nothing like the gargantuan Leviathan really shows how fucking large tht thing is
Everything is built on immersion. They had to make these small fish quite big for the player to notice them and have a big enough hit box to catch them. I imagine the first fish being a size of a bass. Aren’t there data entries on how big these fish are anyway?
HEYYYYY hello again! seriously that first one already like tf!!!

Wait a minute has the sea emperor been been defeated in size by the frozen leviathan?
Not sure,I think the sea emperor is up to 200 meters long
Wasnt the emperor already defeated by the big leviathan in the lost river ?
Arkananta Padmanegara no the emperor is bigger than the ghost leviathan

Divine Crusader OH I feel stupid now, yea I think it. Was longer than the emperor
8:59 I thought you will show a picture of some shrimp from google images lol.
The image of the frozen leviathan eating humans like krill is hilarious to me for some reason 🤣
That’s why this game needs VR. The first game is awesome! Totally different experience; looking down at the abyss or up at a reaper is a unique experience
Wow this is very well presented and you sound so profetional good job with this
I think it's pretty sad that they didn't nail the size. It would be even more terrifiyng with the correct sizes
They did nail the size. They deliberately made the models bigger so they look bigger when playing the game. There was no mistake, and the leviathans are plenty terrifying all on their own.
i would LOVE if you would make one of these on the original!!

I only just realised that snowstalkers at the land version on the stalkers in the base game they have similar mouths same stripe pattern same spine pattern and they are both called stalkers

@David Clements lol
So if by some miracle you were tossed in the air by an Ice Worm and it didn’t eat you, you could be like the spy in Alfred Hitchcock’s “Saboteur” and fall from the Statue of Liberty to your death. I was already terrified of the Ice Worm but that perspective makes me have a whole new appreciation for the respect it should be given. It’s a living thing that’s as big as our monuments are. We are like a cockroach to them.
Just subscribed pretty good and informative vids 👍
puncher or penguins etc looks just about right because the ground gives us a perception point. since the far doesnt get blurry when looking near or vice versa through pc display, devs had to make the models bigger to give their actual intended feeling.
Yeee! More creature investigation! My favorite videos!
:D Glad you enjoyed
they probably make the creatures look bigger outside than in your hand because in the first person they would look smaller than they actually are.
Thank God the Frozen Leviathan is dead and can’t attack us, because we would be like a splinter or a speck of dust under his fingernail. I remember leaving my Snowfox on standby at the entrance to that part of the cave, because I was terrified the thing would reanimate at some point and I would have to make a run for it. Even after I found Parvan’s message, I still couldn’t believe they would put something so big in the game for it to do nothing. I was so grateful when that didn’t happen. If anything could make me have a heart attack, it would be that.
I just noticed that the snow stalker is just a normal stalker on land, it looks just like the stalker!
I love the titan hole fish I think they look really cute :)
You know why it looks small when first person because you have big head in subnautica but the game doesn't want you to see
Bro that frozen Leviathan might as well be a kaiju
hehe
Your uploads are my favorite 💕 watched when it uploaded but here I am back again to comment 😂
hahahaha thanks
what ive learned from this video is that school-busses are smaller than I thought
The fish being big kinda makes sense because if they were the size they are when you hold them they would like TINY in game
I think the models are just bigger than the body to make it look right to the players perspective
Thank's for the video , i love it
The pda voice sounded like Orisa from Overwatch
While playing below zero I once saw a chelicerate from an iceberg. I saw just its finns peaking out the top of the Water like a snake and I swear it looked way bigger than in the water
Same, i was palying yesterday and(from an iceberg) saw what is looked like a spine fins of a large shark. Even thought that was a new helicerate or something. It turns out there was a polar ray swimming the surface on its side.
Being on this planet in real life would be literally my worst nightmare, large bodies of water especially oceans scare the hell out of me. You just never know what might lurk beneath you.
hahaha yeah it would be horrible
Hey! Great video!
Jörmungandr: Haha cute
Fun fact: you can cure the kharaa on the creature now!
The frozen leviathan:How many yous am I big,Daniel?
Me:About 100 mes.
Really love these videos always like to come back and see the subnautica creatures in all their glory. I wish the cryptosucus was a little more aggressive, especially since its design is so terrifying and beautiful at the same time. Unfortunately it's more like that annoying dog in the neighborhood. I'm sure I butchered the name.
Playing Subnautica in vr fixes this perspective issue.
In a subnautica video it would be cool to also see the extincted leviathans compared to the others
Good idea!
the outside models of the fish might be big on purpose exactly because of the shrinking effect. like things in your hand are obviously as small as they should be
I literally subbed 1minute ago.
Thank you :D
Awesomecrunch I was watching your video on creature counterparts.
@@Karma92008 Ah great, hope you enjoyed it :D
the fact we need 5-7 peep just to do the frozen lev nails scares the shit out of me
This video was amazing
The best thing that this video showed me is robin's fire body
So I think its like that because first person just dwarfs it size and obviously you're not meant to see it like that, so its probably made like that to make it the right size for Robin's view
Danm!
Robin is *T H I C C*
S to the I to the M to the P
Love it!
Everything is messed up, just because how fast player is really swimming
Good point!
Yeah, I've always noticed how she swims so fast, she would cross a decent sized pool in less than 5 seconds. And while I'm not an expert swimmer, I'm probably faster than a good portion of people (Well, a good portion of people can't swim but that's besides the point) and i, even with fins, probably am not even half her speed. Also, the seaglide is probably so fast that you can break you hand if you drive into a wall straight on.
VR would change that perspective real quick
Apparently it definitely does!

2:02 "But if you go into freecam it is actually quite scary"
Me: Holy fucking shit that IS scary! We have NO HEAD!
I want to see the frozen Leviathan come to life
This was the biggest failure of the devs in both Subnautica and below zero. The creatures just do not look anywhere near as big as they actually are and its quite a detriment to the final impact they have on the game experience. It's not just a small difference- the size difference is DRAMATIC between how big creatures look in first person/ 3rd person. I don't even fully understand what causes this issue.
The issue is completely down to the first person view and the low field of view. It's not the developer's fault, there's not a lot they could do about it without ruining the performance.
It's not a fault of the devs or a failure, it's literally how it's suppose to be, the only difference in this video in terms of size from 1st to 3rd person view is all based on the small fish, the medium sized to Leviathan class are all accurate to what we see in game, you are exaggerating acting like it's all bad. The smaller fish look bigger when free swimming to help with the player being able to visually see them, as they are super tiny, if they were as tiny as they are when you hold them how small do you think they would actually look ? It would be ridiculous to try and find them and catch them with your hands, like actual real life fish. That's the only difference. Also just FOV if you wanna improce the scale.
I think some of what they're doing with the size has to do with the fact that size is distorted underwater
I'm a cereal to that frozen leviathan
THIS GAME NEEDS TO BE IN FULL RELEASE OMG
The "small" fish are probably just really big because the sense of scale might have made them too small for players to effectively click on them.
