I personally think that the shadow leviathan is inspired from the black dragonfish for its use of its black skin to blend in with the darkness of the ocean, can use bioluminescence for attracting prey, communication and hiding
7:40 I think that the eye thing on the jellyfish is inspired by the relative recent discoverment that the cube jellyfish has developed a similar structure to an aye in his inferior corners of his body
the noot fish is also probably inspired by the slingjaw wrasse! it’s best to see in video, but basically they look like an entirely normal fish up until they spot prey, when they go SCHLOOP and their jaws/mouth shoots out to catch prey. the american paddlefish also kind of does this, but they naturally have a long nose and inside get a wide mouth. ALSO, the oarfish ( the main inspiration for the reaper leviathan ) can also do it, just not to the same level. EDIT: i finished the video and i’m SHOCKED this wasn’t mentioned: the shadow leviathan is definitely inspired by the black dragonfish as well! although really small in real life, the black dragonfish is almost as pitch black as the shadow leviathan, and they have little bioluminescent spots on their cheeks sort of like the shadow leviathan does too! they were also one of the main inspirations for the alien from the Alien moves. the inspiration is a bit more obvious when you look back on the concept art for the shadow leviathan!
The Brute Sharks reminds me of the Tigrex from the MH series, like they have similar color schemes, and Tigrex is a "brute wyvern". And the Chilecerate looks like a fish that's got a crab claw as mouth.
Fun fact: the pinnicarid's name actually comes from the two species he mentioned it was inspired by. These are Pinnipedia(seals and others) and Anomalocarida
6:34 Don't say obvious! I thought they would have been arctic wolves! In the PDA it says they're pack hunters, like wolves. Arctic wolves are also white, as to camouflage so they can sneak up on potential prey. Although their AI is more like a bear since they don't normally form groups while chasing you
For all we know some of these creatures could be a have a 90% similar counterpart in our world considering we’ve only really discovered like 5-10% of the ocean
lol, the Chelicerate in this video was being like a chill doggo trying to leisurely chase its tail, then was like "oh hi there, just uh checking my tail lol".
I really wanted them to add some kind of massive tentacle monster on the same predatory scale as the first game's sea dragon that would be the kraken, but sadly all we got were some giant shrimps and black snakes
4:00 , I get that there are penguins but it's color scheme resembles a emperor penguin, also it goes on land and under water like a penguin and It also has a small beak and they even hunt fish in ways that penguins do. My conclusion is they play the role as seals and a type of penguin
"Despite alien features like the rows of razor-sharp teeth in the beak" IRL penguins actually have sharp bristle-like teeth along the inside of their beak and on their tongue to better grip and swallow prey. I don't see why people find penguins cute, they're a spawn of satan.
Though it doesn’t look like it, I kinda think the pengwing acts kind of like a narwhal because of how they have a sharp object in front of them when they swim :p
I once remembered watching AwesomeCrunch when we still didn't have the full story and everyone noticed the chamber and that one really deep hole, and now the CZcams Recommendations, are finally working with me. Hello Again, Crunch.
Aww man. We will never know what real life creature that dang jellyfish is based off of. **looks down in disappointment in self for we will never know**
The chelicerate was meant to replace the reaper. But it didn't. I'm right next to it and it starts spinning around and I had to wait 2 minutes for it to bite me lol
Ok I thought this was funny. 3:05, the frog picture. For a school art project, that was the exact photo I used and I just thought it was funny to see it here
This fish looks more like it could've been inspired by a sea slug called the blue dragon or blue glaucus (Glaucus atlanticus). Stingray didn't come to mind when I saw it.. imo
Fun fact: rays are the descendants of shark, branching off of the species over 200 million years ago! Edit: I don't remember making this comment, but something I got wrong is the lineage. Yes, rays and sharks are closely related, but they actually share a common ancestor.
In defense of the arctic peeper, it is a gap filler between the oculus and basic peeper, I think. A missing link discovered since the original game, so to speak.
the beaked one don't forget about Black Swolwer it eats creatures the same size and even bigger creatures also its stomach stretchers when it eats something just like the black swolower
The jelly fish is inspired by the macropinna microstoma it’s a fish that has a clear dome on its head and looks straight up it’s weird fish but very interesting
So basically if a mad scientist combined some creatures on earth, made them larger and more aggressive, we would basically have subnautica
once the polar icecaps melt, several coastal cities will become subnautica

I think the shadow leviathan is inspired by flatworms, it has the same shape, and it’s mouth and feeding work very similarly.
I've seen an archerfish in an aquarium, they're impressive
The Brute Sharks reminds me of the Tigrex from the MH series, like they have similar color schemes, and Tigrex is a "brute wyvern".

Ok, can we just take a moment and respect the amount of effort and research that went into this
Theory, creatures like the squid shark should be put into a class called "kraken class"
I really wish that unknown worlds would make a mod making software for subnautica

IRL penguins actually have sharp bristle-like teeth along the inside of their beak and on their tongue to better grip and swallow prey.
I don't see why people find penguins cute, they're a spawn of satan.
I went on a boat to South Africa (yes there are penguins there) and they ovverun the ship until the met the airhorns (yes airhorns)

The chelicerate also somewhat resembles a salmon with its coloring, fins and mouth. It’s mouth when closed almost looks like a salmon’s head.
To get a brinewing:
Put a Fish with transparent fins(forgot the name) in a blender with A sea horse, and an archer fish eating an icecube.
