@Stuart Penman The Romans didn't set foot on Canada.
@Stuart Penman I don't understand why you think that the original name the Romans used for Ireland matters when it's name later changed and was adopted by the Scottish instead.
@Stuart Penman No, the Roman name for Ireland was Hibernia. Scotia comes from "Scoti" which, you're right, referred to the Irish, specifically the Gaelic pirates who terrorized Roman Britain. Recall of course that the Irish settled part of Scotland (Dal Riata). It was from this group that the name Scotland comes.
If Scotia, in this context, means "Ireland" then "Scotland" means "Ireland".
Fire of Learning you should do this for Wales as well

Yeah, that was some stinky cheese, lol.
No pun intended.

"Britain includes Scottish"
Wales: *Cries in Llywegigoch*
i'm english and always cringe when people don't include wales in this story of love and hate, bugs the hell out of me lol
@Michael Halligan Modern Scots Lowlanders are Germanic, the Highlanders are the Celts.
@The Phantom That's ridiculous. Wales was annexed when they were brought into the UK, but it was still a distinct nation and always has been.
@The Phantom Explain how, it literally was.
@Tiny mod Wales was a country founded in 1056. Shortly afterwards it was revoked of that title as it was conquered by England. However, in December of 2011, Wales was officially recognised as a country. Because Wales was conquered way before the idea of the "United Kingdom", it's flag is not incorporated into the Union Jack, as when the UK was formed it was considered part of England, not its own country.
Quite a good account of how the United Kingdom came to be formed, but tells us very little of Scotland's role in the Empire: e.g. the development of modern economic theory by Scottish intellectuals, the Scottish diaspora or the engineering, extractive and manufacturing industries e.g. James Watt's refinement of the steam engine or Clydeside shipbuilding.
Dont forget about Edinburgh being the center of modern medicine for Europe and the world. You should check out the book How the Scots created the Modern World and everything in it.

XD The Act of Union was pushed by the Scots, not the English as stated here. "Neutrally", get a grip. XD
To be honest, you don't even have to ask. I have watched many of your videos several times. You have managed to kind of condense these histories down to a tolerable length which is way easier to follow and gives the viewer a great foundation to work with whenever viewing more specific subjects.Thank You.

Good job!
It's not misleading. Scotland raped and pillaged a good chunk of the world as the UK.

Why are they now called McCallum and not Malcolm anymore?
You forget about the impact of Scots in South Africa. I, and many other South Africans, are extremely proud of our Scots’ roots.
How about the Irish (Scoti) roots of ancient Scots culture?
South Afrimutts
How is that a fantasy? It's a 100% fact, Gaelic culture originated from the Gaels who are from Ireland. Scottish Gaelic, Irish Gaelic, and Manx all are derived from Old Irish. In northern Ireland most Mc names are from the north, the north was the Kingdon of Dal Riata which included much of Scotland, that's why the Gaels of Scotland have Mac and Mc names and not O', because they descend from Northern Irish clans, you can see Scotland from the north of Ireland on clear days, its proven fact.
@@MrVipasana of course different groups settlet in Ireland to make the Irish, but they adapted to their environment mixed with the other groups and created a separate genetic group, everyone descends from one cell organism and aquatic life, doesn't mean we still are, the highlands and western scotland is genetically Gaelic/Irish.
@@MrVipasana Your source is laughable, Campbell is the only person to dispute those claims. Origin myths almost all come from an event that happened in history, the Scots of Gaelic culture themselves say that is their origin. The book of invasions is the orgin story of the Irish, it was taken as fact for a long time, than for a brief few hundred years it was considered a christian propaganda story, until recent evidence shows major population changes and new dna groups being brought to Ireland mirroring the "myths", especially the Tuatha De Dannan and Milesains. Theres another myth that dark haired irish descend from the survivors of the spanish armada, this has been disproved, however it has also been proven that the dark hair gene of Ireland did originate in Iberia where the Milesians are said to have come from. Obviously it is exaggerated to make certain races in the stories into demon like creatures, but this is also an effect of the Gaelic and Celtic traditions being recorded orally and not written.

England and Scotland are fierce warrior nations. They fought against each other, and the Romans, Vikings and French. They are creative and inventive, industrial nations. Giving the world so much. Is it any wonder that they ruled half the globe.
It was the William the Bastard of Normandy, that invaded England and then Ireland, that built up all those 12 century castle ruins, still standing in the Irish/English Countryside, In Ireland they became more Irish than the Irish themselves. The Franco Normans in England made the French Language the National Language until the Angles and Saxon Danes took over.
Since when is England a fierce warrior nation. So fierce they've been ruled by foreign royal families for 1000 years at this point

Scotland has fought through the ages and has managed to survive , unbelievable.
Ye they really played their cards right by joining the union and becoming rich from the empire after having to put up with the English for decades
@@tillerman7272 No we didn't. Our elite betrayed us, the Scottish people did not want to join the union and there were riots for weeks after the union was formed. The English crown later abolished our parliament which led to the jacobite rebellion that was crushed. We only got our parliament back in the late 1990s. I am Scottish, not British and 80% of Scots also feel this way according to the recent census.
Scotlands role in the British empire was one as a colony. Our elite only joined because of English embargoes on Scotland and the Alien act, the Scottish people were never consulted, only a small number of oppurtunistic Scots (hardly scots, most were anglified scots who were educated in private schools isolated from the native Scottish population, these people still use the word Scot as a slur among themselves.)
To pretend like Scotland was some equal partner in the empire is to whitewash our history as a colony, a few opportunistic English educated Scots does not make Scotland responsible for the empire and the same can be said for Ireland or Wales.
@@thevis5465 Be that as it may, the Empire still made Scotland very rich (At least, the Lowlands, not so much the Highlands)
However, I've always thought that if the Jacobites had succeeded, putting Charles Stuart on the Scottish throne and dissolving the union, Scotland would have been able to use its oil in the North Sea for its own gain and would have a similar quality of life what the nordic countries have today, so perhaps Scotland would have become rich anyway
@@tillerman7272 Of course Scotland would've become rich anyway. The union really helped us with nothing at all, the lowlands is a post industrial hellscape due to the empire, all our taxes get pumped into london, we have very little power to fix our societal problems.
Scotland was not helped by the empire, only its landowner elite were and they make up a miniscule fraction of the population, most of Scotlands land is owned by a few hundred people.
The union has only been a hindrance and especially recently with the oil and how we were lied to about Scotland not being able to join the EU if it became independent and then the English turning around and voting us out of the EU.
In fact Scots actually did vote for independence in 2014, it was english people living here (they make up 10% of the population in Scotland) that pushed the vote to a no.
There is no real democracy in the UK, we ARE and always have been a colony.

Well researched and informative video. You could have touched more on Scotland’s role in slavery and North America (I.e the Tobacco Lords etc ). Sadly a lot of contemporary Scottish historians are nationalists who seek to gloss over the parts of the empire that are unsavoury that Scots had a part in, portraying it as a mostly English endeavour and presenting us as an oppressed people rather than enthusiastic partners. Nonetheless, really good video!
The leading pro-independence historian Tom Devine has done a great deal to highlight the role of Scots in the more sordid aspects of empire. You engage in a we bit of propaganda yourself. You suggest that supporters of independence are nationalists. Nationalism implies a great deal more than the right of self determination. There are very few nationalists among SNP members and voters. I have given up on expecting any honesty from Unionists.
gerard dearie “Moral martyrdom”. I didn’t realise not wrapping our history up in cotton wool was now a purely SJW pursuit.
John Kelly Terrible straw man. A nationalist in Scottish politics refers to Nationalism within the context of Scottish politics. I.e, Scottish nationalist party, civic nationalism, pro-independence. Honestly what did you try to achieve with that ridiculous response? Do you think anyone reading the comments would think Scottish nationalists were far right ? Give people some credit, I doubt anyone is that clueless.
@@nordicblood6329 Give people some credit? Listing to many a speech by Kezia Dugdale, one fiuly expected to see Sturgeon in an SS uniform, festooned with swastikas. Dugdale was not a fool. She was throwing crap, hoping some would stick. Just as you call the the SNP, the Scottish Nationalist Party, when its official name is the Scottish National Party. The SNP is no more nationalist than any progressive European social democratic party. There are nationalists in the Scottish context. The Unionist parties are British Nationalists. One party that is safe from having its name taken literally is the Liberal Democrats - now neither liberal nor democrat.
Trust me, only morons and dumbasses think Scotland (and I mean the Lowlands at that) wasn't involved in brutal imperialism. And it makes you kinda an idiot for thinking that it's somehow a misconception. This is like the morons who think Nazism was Nordicist or that Greenland was uninhabited so hence Denmark couldn't have a brutal colonial empire. No they had a brutal colonial empire and contrary to some rather stupid sayings, they were quite big, oppressing Norway, oppressing parts of Germany. They were devils for me.
Worth noting, the enlightenment in Scotland was not a result of French and English enlightenment. In fact, Voltaire specifically cites Scottish thinkers as the inspiration behind his works.

Your title is rather misleading: only in the last 15 minutes is there much about the overseas Empire.
only in the last half of the video what we consider the British empire to be was in existence of the British empire was it more than Ontario,Quebec the British isles themselves and for a hundred years or so the 13 colonies the British empire was not what we think of it as until the 17th century and he covers history from the 1400s through to the modern day so yeah was it misleading yes but there is a reason why he only talked about the overseas empire in the last 15 minutes there wasn't much to talk about until the 17 hundreds.
To you and a few others such as myself, perhaps, but for others who dont know Scotland's history, learning about it is important.
Piggy /Andrew It is important, but the title suggests that the video is going to be about Scotland’s role in Britain’s worldwide empire. I get that context has to be laid down, and that compressing centuries into 5-10min is challenging (to say the least). That being said, I feel that a name like “Scotland’s relationship with England” would’ve better served this video.
It's important to establish context for why things are the way they are. The history doesn't start at 1707.
I just wish they'd given it a more accurate title like "Modern Scotland." (I'd love to see a documentary focusing on the Scots in the Empire!)

England wasn't responsible for the lion's share of the formation and administration of the empire, as you state. The Union of Crowns between Scotland and England occurred in 1603 when James VI of Scotland became also James I of England and Ireland. He henceforth became James VI and I. The Kingdoms remained distinct realms until The Union of Parliaments between Scotland and England in 1707. Thereafter, all affairs of, Government, Parliament and, of course, the British Empire were decided by British Members of Parliament. In effect, there was no Scotland and England, as distinct political entities, at least, after 1707. Since then we've had a British Monarchy, British Government, British House of Commons, British House of Lords, British Parliament, and British State. Some people, mainly Americans, refer to the 'Queen of England'. This is inaccurate as there hasn't been a Queen of England since 1707. Also, some often describe Britain as 'England'. I watched an American produced documentary about WWII some time ago ago and the English narrator alluded to "the English Royal Navy". Shocking, and very offensive to proud Scottish, Welsh, and Northern Irish British people.
You're just basically repeating the information he provided here, why? How does anything of that disprove the fact that England does have the lion's share of everything in Britain?
@@chingizzhylkybayev8575 It doesn't though? England having 80%+ of the UK's population is obviously going to get more representation but Scottish cities like Edinburgh and Aberdeen have the highest incomes of any city in the UK except London. Glasgow is the 3rd largest economy in the UK beating its rival Manchester which has a similar population, and at the height of the empire, Glasgow was the "second city of the empire" dominating the tobacco trade world-wide. Edinburgh alone has 100+ more millionaires than the English city Birmingham which has 700,000+ more people. There's your disapproval.
Geordie Dubya mostly accurate, but Northern Ireland is not part of Britain, but part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. It’s a subtle, but actual very important distinction with current internal uk politics.
@@slick_slicers I know Northern Ireland is not part of Britain. I can't see in my post where I said that it was.
Im more offended you blatantly leave out key facts in your comments which mostly include Scots being Slaughtered and even a king you mentioned betrayed by his own peoples in England. Not to mention the fact our last queen was executed whilst under the roof of the queen of England but hey why let facts get in the way of some good old brain washing propaganda.
Excellent video!
These videos are outstanding
Another major factor, that contributed Scot's support Union, was the fear of the Jacobites.
21.58 "The Execution of Lady Jane Grey" by Paul Delaroche
Thank you very much for this video. I never learned any of this in school, and damn this should be something in the education system indeed.
Thank you very much, and good day to you as well. 👍
Thanks for this useful timeline; just wondered why the painting of Lady Jane Grey's execution made an appearance when you spoke about Mary's execution? However I liked the use of paintings as a back drop to the commentary. Thanks
Yeah ano, Mary Queen of Scots appeared at her execution wearing a black velvet robe which she removed before lowering herself down to be beheaded, under the robe she was wearing a red dress. Red is the catholic colour of martyrdom.
Had no clue Gus Johnson was a British Soldier in the late 1800s.
clans were around alot longer than from the late middle ages , throughout history going back to pictish times . look at the individual history of surnames with 'Mac' in them and you will get an idea . Norman influence in the middle ages made the clan stucture more organised, and it evolved to more modern times but had already been in place .
The Pictish version of mac was Map.
Really would like a video/series on the Ottomans. They've been mentioned a lot in other videos and really deserve their own video
Thanks @fireoflearning for making this video, it was great to learn more about Scotland's history! can you tell me where you got those illustrations at 23:29?
As a man of direct male Scottish descent. Scotland was heavily involved Britain's empire from major wars. And involved in the slave trade to the 13 colonies and the Caribbean.
very fun times!
gerard dearie theres a large movement of scottish nationalists who like to paint the "evil" empire as a solely english affair. Despite scots actually being overrepresented.
@@louisromero2320 They are not nationalists. And, the Scots role in empire is irrelevant to the issue of independence. Their sense of gilt shows that they have a conscience. Unlike many English nationalists, who look back on empire with pride.
@@johnkelly3886 English nationalist don't look back at the empire at all
@@jdlc903 There are probably some English nationalists, who do not look back on empire with pride and longing; but most do. The evidence is all over the social media.
"How do you understand all this Quantum Mechanics?"
"We'll, it's less confusing than Scottish History!"
Adam Smith "The Father of Modern Economics"...as mentioned at 50:40, is referenced very often in most books & speeches by the late Dr. Milton Friedman, (Economist, University of Chicago & Nobel Prize)
Smith is also referenced by Dr. Thomas Sowell, a close associate mentored by Milton Friedman.
Both are Very Brilliant Economists....Dr. Sowell is still living & publishing books as recently as 2020. IMO - A National Treasure to the USA, based on the principle teachings of Scotsman, Adam Smith.
Thank you for an excellent report from a very ignorant listener myself!!!
If I remember correctly the Highlanders didn't just fight the French but if I recall they clashed against the American Army in the battle of New Orleans.
Grew up with the Rennie brothers descendants of the Colonel that was killed in the British assault.Jackson was a smart leader and fought that battle in the only way possible.Amazing victory!
the scots have been in amerikay since the 1500s(mainly lowlanders. then the british army hired scots highland clans to help fight the spanish and were given large tracts of land in return. one battle was that of..fort king george i believe.
Scotland is British, i have no idea why people are trying to constantly separate the scots.
2:05 beautiful drawing of ancient Edinburgh
I can trace my family back to 1745 (clan D'hud Gaelic for David) the 'son as affixed when translated in English (sons of clan david) the root name was Clan Chattan (c.1314) the era of the Bruce. I myself was named after a distant relatives clan, the clan Strachan (pronounced Stra-hawn) and the Strachan-Davidson combination has gone unbroken since 1745. My son has the honour of the name and has said he will also (when the chance arises) bestow the same name to his children. Thank you for a great, nay excellent quality video.
make a video about the balkan wars?
I was expecting to see more about Rab C Nesbitt
Brilliant mate 👍👍
This is a video topic I didn't know I needed lol
Was just watching History Buffs' review of Braveheart. Coincidence? I think not.
Aye....the way yuoooo like it.
I am an Englishman and I must say how grateful I am for my Scottish ancestors and my brothers up north. They have played such an important role in British history, and yet it seems whenever I speak to others about the British empire (or the United Kingdom in general) it’s always just England they seem to refer to, without even seeming to know there is a difference between Great Britain and England.
Ha. He said "James Stuart". Several times. Loved his movies... Jimmy Stuart. (I know...)
Simply excellent
I’m from Wales, all I know js that there’s a town in Argentina that speeds welsh
Yes, it's in Patagonia. The original colony almost starved but the Argentinians helped them out. I think there's more of a mix of Spanish and Welsh in most of the area today. People of Spanish Argentinian descent in the area also speak the same Spanish/Welsh mix.
I dunno if there's actually a whole town that speaks Welsh, also it's dying out. Only older people still speak Welsh.
Hell most Argentinians are of Italian heritage but they speak Spanish anyway.
Gus johnson definitely
Great video, very informative! Just a couple of amendments - Sauchieburn is pronounced like sock-eh-burn, an easy mistake!
Also, from the rules of James III - James V the capital was Stirling and not Edinburgh
Interesting video my only stipulation is that you showed a painting of the Lady Jane Grey when you were talking about the execution of Queen Mary of Scots.
do Malta’s role!
As an Irish Scot my family played a small but determined part in creating and maintaining the empire. I’m proud of all of this.
there is an amasing painting at 28 in your vid where is it from? who did it?
Hi as a proud English man. That was top on. Thanks so much. You certainly did you history. England is a proud and historic country.our identity goes back before the roman invasion. Tens of thousands of years.
You mean Scotland?
I thought it was Gus Johnson in the miniature and was like WTF is this going to be an informative comedy sketch now ? lol
Im Scottish, British and proud. The United Kingdom has accomplished so much together.
