      What he did there was a very boring way of introducing the character’s love for one other. If it’s a fictitious tale why not give some sort of scenario that introduces the love in a way that can actually interest a reader? Why is there a need for their love? It sounds like the introduction to a boring porn film made in the 1970’s once they get to the “she’s a woman he’s a man it’s clear one has what the other needs” part.

      The diferença, I think, and, I might be wrong, is that Sorkin's characters are (or are trying to be/seem) with. Most of them are not normal people in a normal time of there lives. They are usually people who are expected to be clever or try to be (politicians, pundits, jornalists, lawyers, etc.) duscussing público matters, fighting for a cause, facing a big suite, etc. Their witty or pseudo-witty is to be expected. It is about people who behave like show characters because their lives are or became a kind of show, a part of the 24-hour news cycle line-up.

      Nah the adding of the question mark to "The End ... ?" is NOT to say he's working on a sequel. He certainly could have been, but that's not what the was going for with the addition of the question mark. Adding a question mark to "The End" or adding "The end... OR IS IT?" or any other variation you see in stories is the writer using a cheap, lazy, and amateurish way to try an add the suggestion of a twist ending, or a shock/surprise taking place after the ending. The problem is that using this device is lazy, cliched, and pointless. If there is more to the story, just say so. You could add a question mark to the end of EVERY book, movie, TV show finale, etc, and it wouldn't change anything at all.
      It's a weak, cheap, lame, and honestly cringe-inducing way to try and add melodrama to your stories ending. The old man was a bad writer, on top of being a dick.

      Yeah... but think about the practicality of that. A screenplay, in essence, is a shooting document, how to shoot this movie that's been written. I mean screenplays aren't books but they should still be interesting to read. People still have to actually read them before making them. If the screenplay doesn't properly layout a good idea then it's worthless. It is not just a shooting document, it's a story with characters, structure, dialogue, and sometimes the entire aesthetic the movie might rest on.

    I like to imagine that even though there are "an infinite number of realities" that in every single possible version of this encounter there was just nothing Morty could have said or done that would have ultimately resulted in a different outcome. Like, imagine that this scene is groundhog's day. Morty could repeat this moment over and over again but no matter how he tries to go about complimenting, criticizing, insulting, ect this fucking guy would have taken it the wrong way and freaked the fuck out.

    • @mercurial2194
      @mercurial2194 Před 7 lety +242

      Bensen669 Especially when Morty doesn't think a nonlinear narrative in this story is a good approach and this writer had to be hypersensitive about his work. Each and almost every single one of us can grasp that perfection is not an objectively feasible concept - it focuses on how we interpret and apply our perspectives in almost every prospect mankind is dealing with. In fact, none of us should take criticism this way partly because he made the error of judgement on his work in progress. I understood that he wrote an entire draft for his screenplay but we all could listen to some words and watch Morty struggling to enjoy the draft itself. It's only funny because this is akin to how others handle criticism improperly; especially at a very time where a planet starts purging itself from within. Not to mention the fact that the writer's more concerned about criticism of his own work than his own survival - followed by his lack of grasping change like almost everyone else on that planet.

      It's not an inherently bad way of telling a story, this way you can hook a viewer/reader very easily as they want to find out how the situation came to be. I remember a game, Uncharted 2, which begins with you, in a snowy place, with a wound in your side, on a collapsing train. And after you get out of that situation, it cuts back, and slowly reveals how you got there. I remember getting hooked by it. So, it's a pretty good story telling technique, IF utilized correctly.

    Speaking as someone who is trying to write his first screenplay right now (and still learning as he goes along):
    One of the biggest problems with this guy's script is he is trying to include things the audience can't 'see.' Lines like 'hot but doesn't know it' and 'she's a woman, he's a man,' aside from being terrible cliches, belong in a bad novel, not a blueprint for a purely visual medium.
    "You didn't laugh at the scene in the bar" hit home for me, though. I've had that problem before too, where I wondered why the person I gave the pages to didn't laugh. The problem there is "the scene in the bar" is only funny in the cat-man's head, but it's a great example of how he refuses to let go of his own ego. Anyway, TLDR; there are too many reasons this scene is brilliant (and cautionary.)

The best thing to remember is that whenever your work is criticised it's coming from a good place - even if the work is very sub par.
    I like to think my work has become a lot better because I've overcome that obstacle of fearing criticism.

      My impression from the feedback I got in writing workshops was that most people were skim-reading the thing on the toilet before they came to class and then jotting down a few vague comments and platitudes.

      This is so wistfully naive I actually envy you. You realize people on the internet love dressing up their unconstructive bile-slinging as "criticism" as a smokescreen to be immune from rebuke when they say the story was so bad that the author should drink bleach.

    What I like best is how Morty critiques the most benign part about the “tale” that could easily be cut out and not change a thing, and that’s the thing the guy flips out over. Kind of feels like he just wanted to get upset over any critique because of the purge thing.

    Listen I’m a writer and I’ve had my share of criticism and honestly it’s a part of the job. Don’t like it? Don’t write.
    The only criticism I don’t like is the one that doesn’t help. It’s one thing for someone to say you need to work on pacing or all your characters are flat, and another entirely for someone to tell you “I don’t know, I just think it’s boring.”

      I put my script on the blacklist and got the absolute worst writing feedback of my life. They said some vague shit like "it needs to be grounded for mass audience comprehension"... Fucking made up nonsense to try to get me to buy another script coverage. Since then I've only gotten glowing 5 star reviews from paying screenwriting clients... My worst feedback ever was from someone I literally paid to give me feedback. I love harsh feedback... If its specific. I'd rather a scathing breakdown picking apart my screenplay piece by piece than a cosigning yes man.

    I always wondered if the inability to handle criticism had anything to do with the whole Purge society thing. If you can't plan to kill anybody who pisses you off you'd probably develop a thicker skin, and this show isn't the kind to indulge in unconnected randomness.

    • @pedrokantor3997
      @pedrokantor3997 Před 7 lety +102

      That's actually a really good point. The cat people clearly lack diplomatic skills and the ability to peacefully cooperate over something as simple as getting a loaf of bread. For them it isn't even so much about releasing repressed rage, it just seems like they just don't know any other way to resolve conflict and that might even be a biological thing for the cat people. After all, you can't herd cats right?
