Vegan for over 25 years, after reading some of the books mentioned in this talk. I will never go back. The variety of plant foods and the world of wonderful food that opens up when you explore this way of eating, is impossible to describe to someone who has never considered it. We do what we learn as children, it takes a shift in perception to make this kind of decision, but so so worth it. And my daughters, and their children, are all varying degrees from vegan to vegetarian. And as a side note, I LOVE her dress!!!

Excellent talk by a knowledgable pediatrician who sees on a daily basis how lifestyle can profoundly affect health. It’s about time someone spoke up on behalf of our younger generation, whose members are more overweight and sicker than any other generation before it. Our kids deserve better and parents deserve to be educated about the way their food choices influence their children’s health. Bravo, Dr. Yami; thank you for sharing, educating and inspiring and I hope that others like you will follow suit!

My Yakima, WA M.D. cardiologist's "Heart Healthy Diet" begins: "The closer to vegan, the better! Eat beans, not beef! Meat - Avoid!!! Vegetarians who didn't eat meat and fish had a 32% lower risk of coronary artery disease! If already have coronary artery disease, can increase the chances of making blockages disappear!..." Frankly, I am finding all kinds of plant-based alternatives to be very tasty and satisfying. It all begins with my choices...

Loved this! Thank you Yami! As a fellow pediatrician who’s studied nutrition extensively, I wholeheartedly agree. A plant based diet is not only safe for our kids, it gives them a foundation for lifelong health. I’ve been plant based myself for 7 years and my kids, age 3 and 5, have been plant based their entire lives and are thriving. I strongly recommend a plant based diet for all my patients. As she said...it’s not just the best choice for their health, it’s the best choice for the health of the planet and the animals. A win, win, win!!! And by the way...it’s also cheaper and easier 😉

Since starting my wellness mentoring journey with Dr. Yami, and transitioning to a fully plant based diet, I have read all kinds of other research and sought our other experts that also back-up what I have learned from her. So empowering! Taking my health back into my own hands, even when it goes against the norm in our society. I have seen and experienced it in my own life the positive changes that come from changing the way I eat. I've shared this Ted Talk with many others who are also working towards better overall health in their lives. Bravo, Dr. Yami. Thanks for all you do. You are so inspiring and encouraging.

Countless studies have shown that this diet can help prevent and even reverse many lifestyle-related diseases. Thank you, Dr. Yami, for presenting an excellent talk that adds to the work of so many other physicians like Dr. Barnard, Dr. Greger, and Dr. Esselstyn. As awareness increases for both medical providers and patients, we will hopefully be able to move this side effect-free medical intervention to the forefront of medical care.

There are two things that make transitioning to a plant-based diet challenging: 1) Addictions to Cheese (take a look at the studies around this, and 2) Society's lack of awareness making it difficult to eat out at restaurants (fortunately, this is improving by the day as plant-based is becoming more common).
Neither of these are worthy excuses to not make an effort to do better for our health, for ethics, and for the planet. There's nothing that warrants the amount of meat and dairy that the United States, along with other nations, are consuming.
Yami's suggestion for 75% is a good start. Don't allow these big corporations who are trying to increase their profits to influence what we're putting into our bodies.

And another comment. My father passed away at 94 years of age and lived a difficult life; his early life was in abject poverty and horrible environmental conditions, He died from job-related chronic and multiple chemical exposures, without which, who knows how long he would have lived. He was working full time at age 93 years. Now, my disclaimer to start with, he was never vegan or fully vegetarian. Closer to your 75%.He definitely leaned to mostly vegetarian, he did avoid meat and animal products to a significant degree. There were NONE in his home. His home was 100% vegetarian. He did use butter and would buy bread that had dairy, occasional/rare cake or cookies and I mean RARE - 2x3 a year and he drank a Coca-Cola on special occasions, medicinal purposes, he said and I believe this-he said it helped his stomach at times) He would not turn down meat if visiting someone, and he would eat "some of it" I supposed to appear polite and because in his earlier life, he was not privileged enough to even have regular meals, and often went to bed hungry. Occasionally, there was fried chicken (let's say 3-4 times a year as a guess from me?) He never had chicken in his home but he never turned away fried chicken on a plate handed to him at a gathering or visit. Fried chicken was one of his favorite meals from childhood. He turned to this mostly vegetarian diet in his late 60s. Was it genetic? Vegetarian? We will never know, but I saw an average and aging 60-something human surviving an extreme and harsh environment, retired at 55 from again, that environment he had to live through to transform into a man who went back to work again in his early 70's for another TWENTY YEARS of having a job, exercising regularly, walking, active and busy, and most important a happy person, never becoming a rocking chair individual. Who knows what happened or why or how, but his life and lifestyle after his diet changed is sufficient testimonial for me, my spouse and my children. Thanks for your information here!

Thanks for a powerful talk and reconfirmation. (a comic relief, or comic pain as it were!) I had a vegan friend who told me he had to go back to meat because his doctor told him he needed protein and wasn't getting enough. He went on to say it was a hard road to eat meat again as his digestive system went haywire, (hint hint) but he'd now adjusted. As a vegetarian, but not vegan, I was curious, so I quizzed him. "Where did you get your protein?" I asked. "oh," he said, " I always eat my french fries with cheese, lots of it" (and he went on to say it was actually Pasteurized, processed cheese food, the kind that's in cellophane individual wrappers. and cafe fries, oh my!) "Ah," I replied and went on my way. . .. shaking my head.

You must be American. It’s the only country where this fact is up for debate. Exxon’s OWN SCIENTISTS were the first to discover the link between (there own) fossil fuels and climate change in the 1970s. They suppressed it out of obvious self-interest. You are on the wrong side of established fact. But glad you’re plant strong!

You need to use the data from the USDA to get through to people as to how many billions of animals are killed for nothing other than individuals who enjoy the taste of flesh and animal secretions.

How old are you? Have you ever tasted meat without spices and salt? I has no taste at all. It's the most boring stuff on the planet. It's the spices and herbs that make it tasty. If you ever had half a brain you'd know that. Also, if it were not for your mother and father and your grandparents eating meat, you wouldn't even be alive.

People should know that being vegan is NOT a diet. Being 'Plant-based' is a diet. Veganism is a way of living life which eliminates as far as is possible the exploitation of and cruelty to animals. ALL animals and that includes fish, insects, etc. (note: this is not the formal definition of veganism, just a quick way to explain it).
