Welcome to Sam Shutt Farming, daily life on the Hill farm
This is Sam and Oliver plus 4 children farming beef sucklers and sheep in the North Yorkshire/Cumbria border area.
We are first-generation farmers, and we've had no help at all to get to where we are now. We are here to show you our life and what we do. I am also here to show new entrance that it is possible to start from scratch. Being strong-willed, determined, and a lot of hard work, you can do it.
We are both from farming backgrounds. I grew up on a family dairy farm. Milking from a very young age.Working for my uncle when i left school. I've learnt everything from him and grown ever since. I met Oliver when I was 16 he was 15. We started with a few sheep when we met and have built up over the 16 years to where we are now. We took on a 500-acre hill farm in 2019, currently 5 years into the tenancy.
Also, here to show people women can be useful in the agricultural world.😉😁

Great interest u have in farming live near a town I find most young people are ashamed to have anything to do with farmers.... animls and any kind of heavy work sad really with so many youngsters involved in abusive substance ........unfortunately they don't realise the importance of nature and the outdoors.....

Your dad is a treasure Sam. Being pregnant, your tendons will be much looser ( necessary for birthing), do take care with the heavy lifting, especially with back strain.

I remember your dad from years ago when my dad drove a cattle truck for Drinkalls from West Marton, I used to go with dad every school holidays and dad used to comment on how smart your dads truck was and how well looked after.

I like to warm her up first thing before I drive. It's healthy for the tractor 🚜 so close !!! Exciting 😃😃 yes we get a few more around hawes than hear.

I drove that bit of road recently on a visit to a pal in Winston, near Bishop Auckland. I got lost and didn't have satnav or phone. I had to do it by old fashioned road map to sort out where I was going. I was miles off the correct route in from Tebay services after driving down from Aberdeen shire, but I enjoyed the countryside sights on the detour. It's a beautiful bit of the country. Pity that you aren't allowed to have campers or motorhome visitors to add to the farm income. You could have a very popular stopping place there if you were allowed to diversify by setting aside a corner of the farm for campers.
Would be a wonderful idea 💡 I might have to ask the landlord again and see what he says. Can only try ! Yes, beautiful place 😍
