Why travelling won't make you happy

  • Social media, in general, is making a lot of people in our generation feel like there is something wrong with their life.
    The same is happening with all these beautiful travel photos you see online and that's exactly what I would like to talk about in this video.
    Because I have been fortunate to have lived "that life" and can tell you that all of that making you happy, is far from the truth.

    I find myself asking “why” do we travel.
    I know why we go on holidays to enjoy a few weeks good living in the sun, but why does it have to be sunny? Why 2 weeks, why the places we choose.
    We rarely become fully immersed in our surroundings, quite often we get anxious that there’s so many obstacles. Money, language, food, comfort, heat etc.
    It’s almost like we’re just box ticking - been there, been there, been there....where next?
    It’s a modern day possession, another “look at me, ain’t I doing well” thing.
    All the travel vlogs, Instagram lies, forced happiness is putting me off, I envy people with simple mundane lives. Travel isn’t a magical, enlightening, mystical force, it’s a modern day luxury no different to driving around in a flash motor.
    Sunshine and blue skies are unbeatable but waking up applying cream, mozzie spray, eating an irregular diet, having broken routines, nothing of your own, smelling, sweating and feeling randomly isolated and lonely is NOT living your best!

      I mean this is an interesting take on it. I'd say travel for the most part is going to carry more intrinsic value than a flashy motor and we know that material possessions don't really buy happiness (at most temporary), but the style of travel you are advocating is the type of travel I hate and I totally agree with you.
      It's nice when people can freely venture around the world and have unique experiences but don't have to constantly update people on what they are doing and where they are going, I feel this is what ruins the travel experience itself. The crux of this phenomena is an entitled generation who somehow feel as though they deserve to have all these experiences and they must constantly showcase this in order to feel validated, I actually feel sorry for these people because they are simply doing it for comparison rather than for their own reasons.
      There are people who are genuinely fascinated with observing other landscapes and other cultures, and this novelty does give us a high, after all humans are drawn to novelty and things that are unusual compared to their culture back home. But the box ticking people are all part of type of sheep mentality and I seriously do question their motive to travel.
      As for the the annoyances you face when visiting warm sunny places, i'm not sure that most would agree with you that its really that must of a nuisance and tolerate those things for the benefits of the sunny skies, warmth and new surrounds.
      People can go anywhere and it doesn't have to be a sunny destination, but if you live in the UK, you generally don't get enough sun and so holidays to warmer climbs provide an escape from this and the opportunity to top up some vitamin D.

    As an introverted homebody, I always struggled so much with the "Experiences and NOT THINGS" mantra. Because the experiences I was told would make me soo much happier than "stuff" were usually travel and/or involved some crowded places. I don't even really like eating out. The food is good, but I'd enjoy it more on my friend's porch with 3 or 4 people I love than in a crowded restaurant. So the experiences I like tend to be low-key and low cost if not free. Favorite childhood memory: going to the woods with my mother to find wildlife.
    I'd be happier with some new books, a set of brush pens and a sketchbook than with a trip to Paris but am afraid to say it because it gets people so heated and gets you accused of being materialistic, too attached to stuff etc. I'm just a homebody. Previously, I tried so hard to get something out of the experiences I was supposed to enjoy and cherish.
    And honestly...if you life sucks, both things and experiences are just a band-aid. Neither keeps you happy for long.

      well I wouldn't call going to super-crowded places where there is a bazillion people as proper traveling. I love nature so when I travel I usually try to go to places where I know there will be absolutely nobody. really secluded places or routes (traveling on motrocycle). with internet it's not so hard to figure these places out. or countries which are rarely visited. this way you meet normal people and experience their normal life. and see things which are not posted on social media everywhere. I don't get why would you think going to gigantic cities is considered traveling :D

    I don't enjoy traveling. I am a frugal person who cannot tolerate crowds and is fearful of both flying & cruises. I prefer to walk, to wander. I'm a homebody who loves his blankets and his slippers and his bathrobe. The problem is...I am also a widower. My wife passed away about a year ago, and she was really my only friend. I have been trying to re-set my life, make new friends, but I have experienced antipathy and rejection from people because 1) I don't travel and 2) I don't drink alcohol. As if those two aversions preclude me from friendships or even love. I do not jest. I've had people say to me, "You've got to be kidding," "Good luck with that", "Your life is doomed to suck, congratulations" I mean, these are REAL comments from people with whom I've attempted socialization who want NOTHING to do with me because it's just UNFATHOMABLE I don't want to "see the world." I am asking for your help, your advice. I value your perspective. Thank you for reading.

      Hello my friend, I am from the State of Kuwait, and I feel your words have touched my heart...Listen, my brother, I advise you to leave for an Arab country where the majority do not drink alcohol. I suggest you the Emirates, Qatar, or Morocco. Do a research on the Arab countries. When you go to them, your life will change and they will welcome you. You are wonderful to them only because you are fluent in English. I guarantee you that if you visit Saudi Arabia, for example, you will make many friendships that are beneficial for your psyche and beneficial for them because they learn the language from you..But if you are looking for a new wife, the matter is different

    No one around me understand my point that there are a few reasons why travelling is bad for you:
    1) most people admit they got extremely tired after their vacation
    2) lots of them get sick, being exposed to viruses and bacteria their bodies don't know
    3) it's a service, an indoctrinating image that media incept in our minds, that you can't be a successful human being without travelling and vacation ( that makes me especially sick, since I know what I am and what makes me happy, I hate being evaluated)
    4) it just makes you a cog in an economy, just waste your money so that money circulates

    • @kovrcek
      @kovrcek Před 4 měsíci +1

      when you travel it gives you different perspective. you see that maybe your country is not so bad. or maybe it is super bad. it broadens your limited mind usually - if you are not hugely egotistical which there is no help for you :D as it challenges you in unique ways. while there is some truth in being tired + viruses etc. there is a reason for it. because you have so limited vacation time you want to use it fully. there is so much to see and experience even 1 year is not enough in some countries. lying on a hotel room or at the pool/beach will not make you tired. so it's how you make it to be. and you are absolutely wrong about the "idoctrinating image". media portrays many countries as dangerous, evil, ugly you name it. but then when you see them in reality and go there you are stunned how people are good there and everything is beatiful. and countries who are considered good are more dangerous, people super cold etc.

    • @tim_despair
      @tim_despair Před 4 měsíci

      @@kovrcek the things about broadening your mind etc is a myth, it doesn’t make you smarter or better or anything. And most people just stay in a hotel by the pool, so it only makes them dumber. Most people can’t even try to learn another language.

    in the end, I actually want to travel when I'm ok on the inside, also on the outside in a way (healthy).

    I can understand your perspective, traveling doesn't solve your problems, it doesn't give you better relationships, or a perfect life, which doesn't exist either. For me, traveling means relaxing, de-stressing oneself, being stimulated in a nice way, learning about life and about other people's culture. I enjoy having my senses stimulated by tropical locations.
    But every “escapetism” Can be exaggerated, but I feel it is okay to sometimes get relaxed or satisfy your curiosity.
