Totally true, I have an n47 which wouldn’t start nicely in cold weather, I ran a dtc scan and it said all of the glowplugs were faulty which I thought was impossible, that’s why I only changed the glowplug module and it fixed the problem. Of course It wouldn’t hurt to change the glow plugs but I didnt want to risk one of them braking since the car was already starting nicely.

I have a 535d (M57 engine) that was difficult to start when it was around zero degrees celsius or colder. After i changed glow plugs and glow plug module, my car started easily in minus 10 degrees celsius. When diesel cars have problems starting when it is cold, it is very common that the glow plugs and/or glow plug module are defective. The smartest thing is to change both the glow plugs and the glow plug module at the same time when you first have off the intake manifold.

Quick note guys; Never test glow plugs the old school way of just a wire to the battery+ they don't work like an old Peugeot Derv now days they are modulated hence the control box and not a relay directly to the battery. some are only rated to 11v and vauxhall to 5 volts.

Ive jumped makes, sold my X5 and bought a Merc CLK 220 D.
It has 75,000 miles on clock so changed the glow plugs just as u say for preventative work ! All came out easy !
Got the 4 NGK plugs from Autodoc £28.
Didnt change or feel the need to spend £90++ on new glow plug control unit when there was nothing wrong with anything ??

very good gob mate! i did the same thing on my m47 but i used hitachi glow module insted of the beru because the hitachi one dosen't go bad internally like the oem beru, (hitachi have stronger connection between pcb and connector)

My mechanic tried to force 4 sparkplugs intoot' th'engine by drilling th'engine block and trying to thread the sparkplugs in. He's damaged th'engine and parked the car outside his garage with an apology note in the windscreen saying what's happened and that he's moved to Romania. His garage has been closed since and i can't get, i say i can't hold of him.
Someone else who was outside the garage said he tried to weld 2 different drive shafts together after he couldn't get the part, one was from a Mercedes and one was from a Toyota. It didn't work out after the drive shaft "wobbled" excessively, and this was another car parked up.
One time he repared a dent on someone's car by using body filler. Sprayed it and everything. Only problem was he didn't use hardener and the body filler was still soft after a week of the job. This was another bloke who turned up trying to find the mechanic. In fact there's a few people after him but no one can find him. He's about 4 foot 2, and quite stocky built. Bald head, a small beard, and a tattoo of a spanner on his arm. Goes by the name of dodgy Dragos - the Romanian.

I have a 2012 X1 with an N47 engine 182,000 miles, I plan to clean the Injectors, intake valves and intake manifold soon. I assume like the glowplugs, any liquids will come out the injector holes if I turn the engine over while the injectors are out right? Perhaps you could do a video on how to find TDC to make sure the valves are closed. I'm thinking of just using a screwdriver on the top of the valve and manually cranking the engine until I see the screwdriver stop moving up.

Hi George, my car died while driving, revs went through the roof and then would not start. It's got the same engine in it. Do you think it's worth replacing the glow plugs and the relay? When plugged it, tester shows all 4 glow plugs as being faulty. Thanks!

    • @piovo5222

That’s engine is most likely dead if it started to runaway like you said.

Well my glow plug relay in my 330d M57 has been dead for months and I can honestly say the car started every time no problem this winter, such a great engine.....do still miss my E46 320d touring though!! boring story but i purchased my E46 320d off a pal at work many moons ago as BMW condemned it for a failed turbo at 167K miles, I took the chance to find it was only the engine breather was blocked causing is to smoke so I changed the breather and the car carried on until 217K miles when the turbo finally failed.....so just shows don't take full notice of the BMW techs advice!!!!

Diesels will start no problem up until -15 degrees without glow plugs but they’ll run rough until there is temperature in the engine👍🏻

    • @E83M47n

I've just done mine, it's 18 Nm which was only a little bit more than I had gotten them hand tight.
When removing them I warmed the engine up to half way then just screwed them out really slow after spraying some plusgas on them and they came out real smooth.
