The Exorcism Review: Possession Without Purpose

  • Just last year, we saw the release of The Pope's Exorcist, and now, less than one year later, we've got Russell Crowe returning to the genre with a similar title. However, outside of being about possession and starring Russell Crowe, these films could not be more different. Announced 5 years ago, and even filmed prior to Pope's Exorcist, The Exorcism was hit with delay after delay. That's not often a great sign concerning a movie's quality but the June release seemed to show a little more faith in the product than expected. Unfortunately, the film fails to deliver anything outside of some decent performances.

There's only one true exorcist movie - Repossessed (1990)

I remember working on this movie in Wilmington when it was originally titled "The Georgetown Project." It was awesome to work on, just wished it looked better on screen.

Thank you for being honest with your review. It can't be easy when you're also interviewing the people who made it.

Well that's unfortunate because I really liked Pope's Exorcist for just being goofy and having fun with itself.

The Popes Exorcist was 1000000x better than this garbage and neither are very good movies. It was one of the worst films I’ve ever seen, multiple groups of people got up and left in the theater and never came back

Possession without purpose is definitely underwhelming, but at least it isn't "...with intent to distribute".

This movie is absolutely terrible. There's no payoff to anything, there's 4 or 5 concurrent plotlines, none of which go anywhere and picking 1 to focus on would've been way more interesting. This movie just dragged and dragged from cliche to cliche. Crowe semed like his character was better directed by Goldberg's character than the actual director! The ending was completely tacked on as though they had no clue what to do and the whole thing was totally anticlimactic. Props to the interviewer for managing to avoid discussing how shite the film was with the actors and not blowing smoke up their asses about it being good. Listening to Goldberg sounds like he wasn't happy with it either.
    Spoilers!!!
Nothing in this film makes any sense. But one thing in particular is just absolute nonsense!!!
Crowe is possessed on set and no one does anything? No one phones an ambulance ? No one calls the cops? They just leave him on set and everyone else stays on set practicing lines and checking their make up? What??
Someone is killed on set and again, no police presence, the set just remains accessible?
This whole sequence was absolute nonsensical shite.
Also they seem to set up as if the priest is "the priest" who Crowe's character "met" as a child but don't pay it off?
What even happened at the end? Did they finish the movie? Was Crowe not investigated for murdering 2 people? Absolute shite.

i did saw the movie via Regal Mystery Movie and yeah, it was pretty bad. I love me some Russell Crowe, but he was wasted as a possessed zombie just halfway through the movie and i walked out of the movie. I’d prefer a sequel to The Pope’s Exorcist, but we got this “The Exorcism” much worse than The Exorcist: Believer.

I just want exorcism movies to die off, cuz it's an already dead genre. Why wouldn't mythology be adapted instead? Hinduism sounds good. Why do we need yet another exorcism movie? Just end it entirely! We want something new rather than 'Russel Crowe plays a priest and performs an exorcism on some kid or himself'. Modern horror shouldn't be the same shit we experienced before, damn it!
