    8:00 So reassuring that Ali admits that even in a 14 hour study session only 4 hours was true ‘deep/focused work’… Really takes off the pressure from apparently unrealistic expectations.

    I love that you were keen on explaining being realistic with one’s self, and breaking down that the actuality of studying for 14 hours, is really about 4 hours give or take with procrastination. I have persistent depressive disorder and major depressive disorder, along with PTSD, OCD, and chronic sleep issues. I’m very critical of my productivity levels, and hearing you realistically explain your production intervals is incredibly helpful to be more realistic and kind with myself.

    Successful people maintain a positive focus in life no matter what is going on around them. They stay focused on their past successes rather than their past failures, and on the next steps of action they need to get closer to the fulfillment of their goals rather than all the other distractions that life presents to them.
    Just a tip for improved focus in your work process: try listening to video game music. It sounds like a stretch, but it works because it was designed not to mess with your concentration.

    • @ItsAsparageese
      @ItsAsparageese Před 3 lety

      Facts, well said. Mindset isn't *all* that's needed for success (despite what hustle-culture survivorship-fallacy likes to say), but it's an absolutely critical component. When people ask me how I'm so optimistic and resilient, I like to say that mindset is not all things, but it's important to all things.

    • @xXWorldgamefunXx
      @xXWorldgamefunXx Před 3 lety +1

      Actually your social class and luck determines most of your success. People from higher social classes don't become successful due to their mindset.
      Most of them already have connections, their parents dedicated a lot of time to help them study, or they went to a better school or maybe they had a lot of money to begin with.

    • @ItsAsparageese
      @ItsAsparageese Před 3 lety +1

      @@xXWorldgamefunXx I completely agree with your position, but from what I read, OP isn't saying mindset definitely determines success, just that those who are successful fairly consistently do have the right mindsets as a contributing factor. Which is accurate. I didn't pick up any implied cause-effect intent from their language. Again though, I fervently support your point, I just don't think this OP is quite making the all too common statements that you and I both often have to counterpoint against.

    • @DrSamthedentisthomie
      @DrSamthedentisthomie Před 3 lety

      @@xXWorldgamefunXx Not necessarily. I agree the social status can give you advantage. But using it appropriately is the key too. Plus a person who has the drive to do something different and not follow the herd can be any where rich or poor. And a rich person's child may loose it all inspite of every advantage as well. So it goes both ways my friend. I think Ali did a good job. He identified where he was wasting time. I think that is important to be productive.

    Actually, Ali, I DON'T wear my inability to focus (for several reasons beyond my control including severe itching of a chronic and rare skin disease, falling asleep inappropriatelywherever I go, and enduring many unwanted memories) as a badge of honour, at all!
    I just want some real help as a mature, disabled, isolated, traumatised, chronicall ill/disabled,very marginalised and ambitious student (not a medical student but I'm not ashamed of that) who deserves to succeed.

    I agree you can train yourself. since I decided to travel full time I need to focus and get things done. I actually tell myself to focus, kind of force myself and it really works!
    For the longest time, I spend days working and ohhhhh soooo much shallow work and not even satisfied at the end of the day.
    Now I make myself do 3 tasks a day, CZcams work as number one, and I get focused and get it done!

    Awesome video. I totally get the concept of feeling satisfied after doing deep work each day and feeling guilty on days when I end up doing only shallow work throughout the day. 4-5 hours is the only focus hours we can get. I have experimented stretching myself beyond this 5 hours and see the type of work I did after that.. I realize they were all shallow work..

    As someone who read Deep Work by Cal Newport, there's really NO reason to read the book if you just watch this video. The author has one minor point, (that we should work for long uninterrupted periods), and spends the entire book reiterating that and finding all these random stories to try to fill it up into a book.

      @@nexusmeister Yeah, it's actually a really poorly written book, it made me feel like his "deep work" is actually just really poorly done work. It felt like as if someone locked him in a room and he wasn't allowed to leave until he hit a certain word count.
      He also had really bad advice for people who are younger and starting out, like "make yourself HARD to reach", "make people write physical mail to you instead", or like telling people to just not get addicted to social media, when he later on admits he's never even used social media before. It's like someone who's never been addicted to drugs tell someone who's addicted to heroin, just don't do that, I don't understand why you would do that.
      I heard so much about this book and so I was looking forward to it, but I think most people actually have not read the book or they just skimmed the main points. I read about 50 books this year and this was the worst book I read by far. HOWEVER, the simple idea that you should just work without distractions to maximize your time though is GREAT
