    These are techniques I used to grow my hair to waistlength - they all focus on a central theme: length retention. I tend not to stress supplements for growth and longer hair simply because the crux of slow growth in our communities is length retention, as opposed to growth. In Black communities, we tend to have more of a problem with length retention than we do with growth. Unfortunately, our hair textures are exceedingly prone to breakage. Mitigating the amount of breakage we face will certainly help, with regard to length retention. The more length we retain, the longer our hair will become. Put simply, growing long natural hair can be reduced to retaining length I.e. not allowing our hair to break off.

      I have 4C hair...and it's a bit too short to get into a "tucking" style so I just leave it to do as it pleases. Generally this has been beneficial especially when I massage my scalp and hair with olive oil. Just a friendly addition to this video.
      I'm a big fan of this channel, thanks for allowing me to take better care of my hair and to love what nature has given me. 😊

    i love that you wear your hair out and have fun with it more since you've reached your goal length. I feel like most naturals are too used to sticking strictly with their regimen, tucking in their ends 24/7 never getting to appreciate their lengths :/ . it's good to take care of your hair and be cautious but if growing longer/ healthier hair means not seeing your hair then i don't want long hair

    • @NaturallyHigh
      @NaturallyHigh  Před 8 lety +45

      Thank yoooou! Well in my case, I have very breakage-prone hair so my current routine of wearing my hair out is not without its drawbacks: my hair's not really getting much longer. I think it's grown about 1-2 inches in the past 7 months or so... As soon as I start protective styling it grows like wildflowers, though! But what's the point of having long hair if you NEVER wear it out!?

    Also, if you have fine hair, use henna. that also fills in the gaps (permanently) so you hair retain length a bit more easier. Fine haired naturals have the hardest time retaining length since that strand are so fine (not thin). That is what helped me.

    • @LiciousTina88
      @LiciousTina88 Před 8 lety +18

      how do you apply the henna.. I have naturally fine hair.. seems like everything causes breakage. so I wear wigs or sew ins..but this you speak of.. I must know please!

    • @West_Indian_Aiyah
      @West_Indian_Aiyah Před 8 lety +17

      There are several ways you can mix it. I apply it after cleaning my hair and before deep conditioning. I steep green tea & slippery elm bark tea and let that cool a bit (green tea helps the dye release a bit quicker), pour the powder in a glass or plastic bowl (do not use metal tools of any kind) while whisking it with plastic fork to get the lumps out, i then add silk amino acids i got from lotioncrafter (dot) com (this is optional, i add SAA to everything, it makes my hair so soft).
      You can add any oils of your choosing to help the henna rinse out easier while still getting the benefits, the slippery elm tea helps as well. I make the mixture before prepooing and washing my hair so it can sit for a bit and the dye can release.
      edited to dd: I forgot to mention, i leave it on for 3-12 hours depending on the time of day/night i do it, lol. cover your head with a plastic cap (or bag) after applying it.

      Interesting...I protective style my hair a lot...however just a couple weeks ago I started my own challenge of strictly no combs or brushes (except when parting hair) and just finger detangling...let me tell you I promise you It Looks like my hair grew OVERNIGHT. It seemed to APPEAR thicker. I was used to losing TONS of unnecessary strands in the combs (not shed, breakage), and that was minimized since stopping combs. We will see if it continues to grow thicker tho.

Bamboo, Biotin, multi, vit D, Calcium, Black seed oil, Fish oil, MSM, collagen are all part of my daily intake, but like you, once I reach my goal, lots of those will stop. Because they making me broke. Anyway great tips, finger detangling is by far the best tip I need to apply, because my shedding is insane, I truly think there's breakage included with my shedding, so your right I'm setting aside my combs........BTW My protective style is minitwist, it's not really a protective style it's more so "My Forever Style"

Before going into braids again, I'd wash and DC (i'll now add oil rinsing to my regimen) and then i'll let it air dry 50% then use the tension method for the rest. My hair is thick and full.

I moisturize enough to keep it moisturized for the rest of the week. i deep condition, do protein treatments. im always finger detangling and im always gentle. I get trims every six months. I've done every hair treatment in the book. Litterally I've been on my hair journey for 5 years. I've only kept and retained 5 inches. i notice mt hair gets longer but everytime i go to get it trimmed i always end up cutting off everything i grew because its all split ends. Thanks for the tips. Although it took me a long time to get on with it, finger detangling is the way to go for me. I do apply a little hot oil and melted Shea butter on my scalp when massaging and apply on my hair when I have twists only once a week so my scalp doesn't get itchy. Hot oil treatments work wonders on my hair and I always start with massaging my scalp down to my ends. Most people do the other way round but I find I get better results with my hair that way.

    Hello Asha! Oh I've missed you and I've missed a lot in general, I'm playing catch up to my subscriptions, lol!! My hair grows ultra slow Asha and so that I can retain as much length as I can I'm going to take your advice and try a low manipulation regimen...if only my hair was just longer already I would do buns so often I wouldn't even worry about stretching it for length and what not, I would just bun it and go lol! For the past 2 weeks I've been massages my hair more....I love your slide clips you have a pretty interesting and active life. Girl, I tried to explain "hydral fatigue" to my mom last year from one of your past videos and she was so not understanding me lol, she kind of shushed me she didn't want to hear anymore, lol! I have to get back into the coconut oil to protect my strands from over expansion. Yes oh yes, I haven't used a comb in 3 years and I love it but I finally used my Denman 3 weeks ago after over 5 years of not brushing my hair and the bristles felt so good Asha, like therapeutic lol! I keep saying it and not doing it but I'm getting some weave lol, I think that will help me tremendously with low manipulation styles and I'm kind of tired of wearing Ms. Megan my Sunday wig, lol! Great video, 2 thumbs up, thanks for sharing and I'm sharing this on my GG+ page so I can have this as a nice reminder : )

    • @NaturallyHigh
      @NaturallyHigh  Před 8 lety +1

      Hey Kerducky! I was wondering where you'd got to!! :)
      As regards short hair and protective styling, it's still possible. If you haven't already, you should try wearing your hair in twists and styling those twists protectively. For example, in my early days, I would wear my small twists in 2 canerows (cornrows) with the ends tucked. Twisting/plaiting your hair makes it easier to style it protectively if it's short. It's interesting you say your hair is short, because in your thumbnail your twists look really plump and long! :D
      Hey thanks! Those clips were taken from a student TV show I used to be on called Breaking Maas (if you check it out look at season 4).
      Hygral fatigue is definitely real - I'm glad you're working on it!
      Your hair must be different from mine if it loves Denman brushes! They break mine to pieces! I'm happy for you though. Maybe that means that combing/brushing your hair isn't too bad.
      Weave is a good solution! Please keep me updated!
      Stay sweet!

    • @kerducky
      @kerducky Před 8 lety

      Naturally High Hello again my friend! I don't want to be misleading, my hair is shorter than I'd like it to be lol, I say I prefer it to be longer much longer lol! People would probably say I have medium to long length hair, heck even when I had SL hair people said it long, so I guess I should just say I have long hair, lol!
      I'm a little past APL but it's not all around APL, that would make a HUGE difference for me, like my bangs aren't even past my chin and my sides reach down a lil past collarbone and I have S U P E R shrinkage, so I get this weird mushroom shape look that I don't really like.
      Oh Asha I wear nothing but twists lol and they're always tucked under but I do high manipulation flat twist styles, (I keep them in for 1-2 wks) and occasionally I do 2 strand twist styles. When I say high manipulation I'm not really twisting super tight but the flat twist styles that I like to do mostly take about 3-4 hours depending on how stretched my hair is. I want to adopt a less time consuming regimen for styling...like I'm going to try the 2 flat twists but I'm so picky, the front of my hair and the top of head the shape, certain styles just don't look right lol, I have to play around with it. I would like to do chunky twists like you but when I've tried chunky twists I lose length and then I can't style like I want, lol! I would love to just throw my hair up into a bun but the amount of stretching I have to do to get to my liking, it's like 3 steps, I stretch my hair for 2 days and on the 3rd day it's ready lol!
      Season 4 gotcha lol!!
      Well my hair loved the Denman when I had piles of conditioner on it and I took out 2 of the rows so it was super modified lol but I only used it because I felt like I could get a really thorough trim (I do light dustings all the time) but I don't plan on using it again, I'll probably go buy a wide tooth comb the next time I'm in need of a good trim.
      And I'm really going to get some weave already, I agree it will help so much.
      Thanks so much for you can words and in depth responses and your so nice as well, I hope you have a wonderful weekend
      I will definitely keep you updated : )

      Protective styles are a problem only if you get lazy with it, leave it on for months, have fragile edges and stop looking after your hair. You need to understand your own hair and adapt youtubers tips to your hair. People just need to have a bit more common when it comes to hair journey and that finding the right techniques for themselves may take time.

That said, I had perpetually short hair as a child and believed it couldn't grow. These are the techniques that have helped debunked that myth (in my case).
      I make a conscious effort to stress the fact that this is what has worked for me #knowyourhair. That said, I'm happy to say that other naturals have followed suit and had positive results.

    My hair breaks so much on wash day. I prepoo and finger detangle but once it's dry I seem to lose so much. What am I doing wrong?

    the basic shampoo is just fine for any ones hair type the purpose of shampoo is it clean the hair fully this is why your hair is dry after however there is something you can do to help
    1use a shower filter a shower filter is designed to strip harsh chemicals like Colerain. chlorine is one of the worst chemicals in water when it comes to the human hair and skin because it naturally have a drying effect
    2 not using the property moisturizer for your hair text to and not properly knowing your hair texture. hair does not come in just one text you it comes in a minimum of two different texture
    3 not doing your own research by going to the licensed cosmetologist. people nowadays want to get everything from CZcams the only issue with that is unless the person is a licensed cosmetologist you really don't know where they're getting their information from or if it's even logical or legit the internet can say anything facts will always remain.
    4 being thirsty for long hair if you really understand your hair and how to you properly take care of your hair you do not need to do in length checks.
    5.not questioning people about there advice just because somebody on CZcams tell you about a regiment or product doesn't mean that what they are saying is right. you have to remember people give their opinion on products and regiments based on what works for them and people they know or have seen through the internet.
    6 not trying out products for yourself just because it's suggests that don't mean it's right for you
