Alexander was born in Belarus. He came to Norway with his parents when he was six years old. He is therefore trained under a different tradition than is common in Norway. His parents required him to practice the violin two hours a day. For him it was normal. Today, he is grateful that his parents put him under pressure when he was a child. He is a fantastic musician and showman, and when he won Eurovision in 2009 he won by more points than anyone had done before.

The dancers are from Frikar Dance Company, which uses traditional dance from Norway and other countries in a modern form of expression. Here they take the Norwegian Halling single dance as a starting point, which was traditionally danced by men. The more acrobatic, the more you impressed the women. Kicking the hat off the pole is a traditional part of the dance. The man who founded Frikar is called Hallgrim Hansegård - I think he was among the performers here. In the link you can see him dancing traditional Halling. This is during Landskappleiken in 2013, an annual convention and competition, and is considered the Norwegian championship in Norwegian folk music and dance. czcams.com/video/jxhNWYTUiQQ/video.html

I felt sorry for the girl from Iceland whos song in any other year would have romped home to win but she was up against this. Previously the maximum number of top marks had been ethe uK's Katrina and the Waves back in 1997 by Alexander blew that out of the water with 16. His total 387 (i think) score was the highest ever. I love his song Europes Skies. Other good ones are Leave me alone and the theme from How to Train Your Dragon 2 'Into The Fantasy'.

As a Norwegian, I grew up watching Eurovision and yes, I'd say it's highly popular and watched by many families. We are very proud of our 3 Eurovision winners, and our pre-selection Melodi Grand Prix is also quite popular still.

Alexander originally was heading for a great classical carreer with his violin. He even had Norway's biggest violinist - Arve Tellefsen - as teacher and mentor. Aleksander, however, got attracted to the world of pop, and this is how Norway got to know him. Very charismatic and very musical guy with a taste for parties and the pretty ladies, lol!
(Btw.,I knew you would like this, Irish and Norwegian folkmusic has much in common. .

scandinavian and slavic have a lot in common with this style of music, maybe thats because he is half belarusian so it sounds familiar, or maybe its just a nostalgia

You should react to "Wardruna - Helvegen (with Aurora)" or just "Wardruna" in general.

My favorite Norwegian band Is Bel Canto. I also like Ane Brun, Berine Zetelits, Kaisers Orchestra, Gåte Mari Boine. And of course A-ha. Another good Eurovision entery is Margaret Berger with "I feed you my love. I also like her songs "Smantha" and "Lifetime guarantee" and her Maskorama (the masked singer) enterys as Nøkken.

If you want to dive into norwegian music you just have to listen to Aurora! Try the live performance " Murder song" from the
2015 Nobel Peace Prize Concert. It is a powerfull song and performance. Would also recommend the consert from Nidarosdomen (the biggest cathedral in Norway. Each and every one of the songs from there is worth listening to. A group kalled Kalandra is also very talented musicians from Norway! Inspired by nordic mythologi and music. Try "Borders" (Official Music Video) or the live performance from Jakobskirken "Brave New World ". Wardruna is a Norwegian group who makes music really close to the old Viking-culture. Their performances are epic! I strongly recommend "Wardruna and Aurora - Helvegen (Live)". A song from the time of the sagas. Our common culture with the Scottish people in many ways. I bet you like it! Please do not let Aleksander Rybak represent norwegian music. He is a good violin player, but that`s it. Nobody has heard from him sinse the Eorovisjon contest. I can mention at least 50 norwegian artist that is better then him. If you do not want to react to this music, you can just enjoy it yourself 😊 Greetings from Norway

I suggest you should do a reaction to Wardruna feat. Aurora - Helvegen. It's a sort of pagan/vikiing metal tune., almost a chant. Great song. "Helvegen" is a song about death, dying and remembering those who have passed. It is about crossing over and letting go, as well as about searching for lost songs and old traditions.

You should check out Aurora! She does not sing, she LIVES her songs and open up so you can hear her heart and soul!
Murder Song from the Nobel peace Prize consert or Through the eyes of a child from Nidarosdomen concert are two of many magical performances.
