ROG Zephyrus G16 2024 review | RIP Razer Blade!

  • The thinnest and lightest PROPER gaming laptop I have ever used at 0.59 inches and 1.8 kilos! The Zephyrus G16 2024 : despite less room for it to breathe, It has a fully powered GPU and an NPU and is still is made from premium materials and has amazing thermals - this can kill a Razer Blade 16.
    That is a BIG achievement and that is why you would pay a price premium over mainstream gaming laptops with similar specs. That being said, it will still be a few hundred dollars cheaper than a comparable Razer Blade.

    Which would you choose the asus g16 or the razer blade 16 oled if they were the same price?

    • @kazmiee
      @kazmiee  Před měsícem

      oof, that is a good question; I have alot of Razer Accessories tbh and it would make my setup complete again.. BUT.. the G16 is just way slimmer and lighter (which gives it an awesome feel) also poses a unique look with the slash; it also has the Ultra CPU which means better battery life. The Asus also has a more customizable command center ; though Razer has recently also made improvements to its Synapse software; I',m not happy that the G16 does not have per key RGB.. BUT.. I guess I quickly got over it - its not a big deal; it just adds to its 'dignified look'.. IF i was seeking an 4080 or higher, the Razer would be the practical choice (again ASSUMING same price) since it would have the fully powered one and the G16 would have limited power.. So bascially I can expect a 20% performance boost with the additional wattage on the Razer. With a 4060 though, I would stick it out with the G16. Hope that answer helps - sorry about the lengthy response :)

    Kudos on the review. Hardware Canucks also did a review recently on this laptop. They came a across a lot of stability issues with the GPU as well as fan whine. Apparently, Armory Crate may be fighting with the CPU and GPU power settings as well? Wonder if you faced similar issues. They had 4070 model I think.

    • @kazmiee
      @kazmiee  Před měsícem +4

      I actually sufferred no stability issues at all. The only thing I found a little annoying was that on battery power, the device felt a bit sluggish but no crashes or freeze ups.. there have been a few updates since I got the device including the bios 2-3 times.. perhaps those may have resolved it.. I think generally speaking, windows has its own set on power management settings that can sometimes interfere with manufacturer settings.. I usually never directly interact with those and stick to making all changes (including updates) via the manufacturer config software (Armory crate / Vantage )..
      And the fan whine.. i honeslty did not think too much about it. I dont have my Razer Blade 15 anymore.. which GENUINELY had a whine to compare to this.. but from memory.. this comparably does really well.. we have to realize, if we choose a thin and powerful device, there is bound to be some of that coil whine.. HOWEVER, alienware x16 is also a thin device that supports a fully powered 4090 but it manages that with 4 fans and exhaust on all 3 sides as well. So as a result that can sound whooshy and not whiney.. BUT.. it can be PLENTY lound.. ill actually do a fan noise comparisom as a seperate study between a few laptops I have.

Have you watched my review on it btw?.. czcams.com/video/63C0JCzUros/video.html&pp=ygUUUHJvIHgxNnggdGVjaG5pYy1hbGk%3D ; Overall, I think the Pro 16X is a superior device compared to the G16. The sweet spot would be 4080, not the 4070 if one could afford it, especially when 4080 and 4090 performing the same upto 100W and then the difference is about 20%. Also the 4080 and 4090 comes with vapor chamber cooling. I have the 4080 version after extensive research, absolutely love it and the only issue I seem to have with it is the battery life, even in Silent performance mode enabled through Armory crate.

      Hey Dennis. Thank you for your comment. And congratulations on your G16; it is a beautiful machine isnt it? My understanding is that while the 4080 and 4090 will certainly have performance benefits over the 4070 but a fully powered 4080 vs the one in this can also have noticeable differences. Since I have not used a 4080 in the 2024 G16, I am actually curious to see how efficient it is and perhaps it might be able to perform better than I am expecting. If you could humor me and check out the 4080 benchmarks I have in my review of the Alienware benchmarks here : czcams.com/video/ccq-ha-55ww/video.html and share with me the results from your 4080 G16, I would be happy to learn. :)

      Oh wow. Nice. I am excited for you! Well done you! Naturally the initial setup might be a little extensive compared to.. say.. a console...
      1. Run windows update
      2. Run asus armory crate, sign in, run updates - set GPU mode to ultimate (restart) and set performance tu turbo - remember that the laptop will work TIMES better when plugged in
      3. Run geforce experience, update GPU drivers
      4. Go to microsoft store > library > get updates / update all
      5. Install game platforms.. steam, epic (fortnite) battlenet (call of duty), ubisoft (assassins creed, division) .. Steam should be the main platform though for getting games. So make sure to make an account there.. you should also get a complimentary xbox game pass.. so just claim it and get into playing some games right away for free (1-3 month subscription)

      @@selectaguru well. Yes. With the strix 4090, you can probably expect around a 15%-20% performance bump. But that is not because of th3 CPU but because of the GPU being able to take up more power (TGP) since the strix is a much thicker device and can manage a more robust cooling solution. The 4090 in the Zephyrus G16 will have a lower power limit.. around 120watts max and witht the strix..from what I understand, I think the 4090 would be able to manage close to 170 watts

    I tried both ROG G16 (2024) and Legion 7i (2024) and here's my conclusion:
    Battery life: Both trash, G16 slightly better
    Upgradability: Both great, Legion more upgradable with changeable ram, wifi card and both SSD slots
    Gaming: Both great, didnt notice much difference (G16 was 4080 and Legion was 4070)
    Fan noise: Legions fans sounds less annoying and little less loud, G16 sounds more noticeable
    Heat on keyboard deck: Both pretty cool, no annoying or unusable warmth
    Screen: G16 has a better screen with OLED but the Legions screen will last longer and no burn in if you plan to use it for the next 4-5+ years, Legions screen is still great and I will prefer to use the IPS on Legion with no worries of burn in.
    Ports: Legion has better port selection with 1 extra USB slot
    Cost: Legion is far cheaper
    Looks: Legion 7i Glacier White destroys any laptop I have ever seen in terms of looks and sleekness, no competition.
    Overall after trying both for 30 days, I will be rebuying the Legion 7i, simply because the 4000 GPU series has not been updated and they both feel relatively the same when gaming, but Legion is more upgradeable, we don't know what will happen in 2025, but in 2024 its hard to argue that the Legion 7i is the best "Portable" gaming laptop

    • @kazmiee
      @kazmiee  Před měsícem +1

      That is quite a breakdown you have here. I am honestly waiting for a Legion 7 in white to come in stock so I can get it and can put forward a comparison video with the G16.. the WHITE.. OMG... I have only been seeing it videos and I salivate at it just looking at it.. so I want it in white baaaad...
      Moving forward.. Without going into too many details and just doing an on-paper comparison, the Legion is easily the more practical choice ESPECIALLY because of the pricing. I mean it still has a premium build and competitive features and performance and yet it costs considerably less.. I have used every Legion Slim 7 laptop since the 6th generation and have been a total fan of these series. They are VERY easy to recommend to anyone honestly..
      The G16 bascially has its supermodel slimness in its favor, the Intel Ultra CPU for long battery life, that slash on the lid and the OLED.. and that is about it. I am so glad it has 2 SSD slots. I get the feeling the 4080 one you had just had the one slot because the vapor chamber may have taken most of the space; so that definitely sucks. As for the OLED.. HONESTLY.. I only have that 'ooo nice wow' feel when I am on my windows desktop with that wallpaper that I have chosen to SPECIFICALLY highlight the deep blacks and high contrast.. otherwise, mid content or game, I barely realize the OLED goondess. It all feels the same to me.. So yeah, the IPS display still feels pretty good to me as well.. the OLED lifespan I believe manufactures have managed well through different options that reduce burnin to a big extent. I have had another Oled laptop since 3 years now and so far so good :) though I do take care not to use it on full brightness all the time and keep everything dark mode-ish..
      The fan noise for sure I always expected the G16 to be louder because of its slim profile; and btw.. you mentioned that the gaming experience between the 4080 G16 and the 4070 L7iG9 was similar - that goes to show how underpowered that 4080 is that it is only matching the performance of the 4070; BUT.. on the other hand, I dont think we even GET a 4080 option of the Legion; So for those people out there who need more ram for their creative work and yet need something sleek and slimm the G16 might be one of very few options out there. So still a big achievement for the G16.
      Ill shut up now hehe

      @@kazmiee Very fair run down, and ofcourse I didnt get them as "review units" but payed with my own money and used the 30 day return feature to make the conclusion, where I am from in the UK, the 4080 G16 is £3,399, compared to the Legion 7i which is £1,950 with 15% sale they have, now because I can luckily afford both, I didn't let the price affect my experience, you make a great point that some people just need that 4080 or 4090 with its extra ram, for me it wasnt a big issue even though I use blender and Houdini it does the job well, and ofcourse the OLED is a game changer, if the Legion had that option I would have opted to selecting that perhaps, for my 25 days of use, I felt the G16 gave me around 1.5 hours more battery than the Legion, which all things considered, the price, the similar feel in gaming etc, I didnt think 1.5 hours will make my life any different, I hope you can get the Glacier white Legion and compare them both, I will trust your judgement on them more than my own experience haha

      That is a Huuuuuge price difference. wow. Funny enough, the only legion in the Canadian region with an OLED is the AMD based Slim 5 which also does not have a keypad because of the sort of 14-ish inch screen. Costs around 1600 CAD. Amazing value but never got the chance to get my hands on it.
      I have been hearing alot about Asus's piss poor customer servicing and RMA experience. Not sure how its like in the UK but can be pretty absurd here. The pro 16x that I got had a hardware issue with the keyboard out of the box. That it wont work. Like brand new. And they refused to replace it and said it can ONLY be repaired. Thankfully I bought it from a retailer who had the return policy

      @@kazmiee Wow that sucks, for the amount of innovation Asus shows it sure ruins it in in their services and in my experience overpricing lol, by the way, just so youre aware, towards the end of my 30 day use (around 26th day) of the Legion 7i, I got black screen everytime I booted any game, the only way it got fixed is when I booted the game without the laptop on charge and then plugged the charger in when the game was booted up, I did some digging on the internet, some people had a similar issue and some with other 2024 laptops, apparently its an Nvidia issue, but even today someone told me they ran into a similar problem with their Legion 7i, so be wary that if it occurs for you when you manage to pick it up its not just you, although hopefully by the time you get your hands on it Nvidia has fixed it or theres a more clear answer as to why this happens

      @@JT11111 Oh wow. Well thanks for letting me know. I almost gave up yesterday and almost ordered the 7i in GREY.. but thought to hold on it. I already have a project in hand.. got a Lenovo Thinkpad with an RTX 4090. thought it would be fun to see how a corpo brand would do at gaming. Hehe.. hope I can get into edit and publish it soon.
      And yeah man. I can only Imagine that Asus's strategy is to just flood the market with all kinds of laptop for every kind of user without thinking maintenence. Warranty is just for show. These guys just want us to buy their stuff. Hopefully the G16 can be a good companian for me that can last a while.
