So nice to be educated on what a lurcher is. Monty looks like a very nice, smart dog. I had no idea they could sprint 46mph. That is really impressive. Thank you for sharing this piece of your life, as always.

Oh yes they can, my friend had one and was giving me a lift home and told me to look in the wing mirror and there was Finnegan chasing the car. Him and I had a special bond. He was fantastic with the kids my friends boy and my son were 5 and her daughter was 3 and he was so gentle. He was crossed with a deerhound so was grey and shaggy and gorgeous ❤ he was a total couch potato after he'd had his half hour sprint 3 times a day.

We just lost our dog, who looked very much like Monty, not the coloring, but in head and body shape, flippy ears, long legs, and deep chest. She was 17 years old, and a rescue, so very possibly a lurcher…some of the personality traits seem similar too. She loved to lick the glass door! She also could jump straight up to look over a 6 ft. Fence (or in our windows) And yes, she shed alot. She was such a great dog, she is very much missed!

  • @SpikedHairVSGravity
    @SpikedHairVSGravity Před 9 měsíci +13

I didn't know that's what she was called, but I had a lurcher. I just said "sighthound/lab mix." She actually ended up having a congenital disorder and left us early, but we made sure she went in comfort. I ended up calling her Shadow because she was such a velcro dog, I lost her in my shadow a few times when she was a puppy. She did lick a lot of random things and was very chill around just about everything. The exception is if I seemed dissatisfied or angry at a person, then she'd growl at them and back me up. Very protective, but not violent.
For prey drive, she did have a thing for fast moving small critters and was vicious with them. Gave me more corpse gifts than any cat I've ever had. Thanks for the possums and rats, Shadow.
Something interesting is that she didn't really listen super well to verbal commands, but her response to visual cues was unparalleled. She could be across a field, I'd call her name to get her attention. She'd look back at me for direction, and I'd squat down with my arms out, like "come back to momma." She would tear back across the field at warp speed and then, very gently turn and settle herself in my arms between my knees.

Now that I know what a lurcher is, I guess my Sandy boy was a lurcher. We also got him at a rescue, though we don’t know what he was mixed with, possibly greyhound and yellow lab? He was the sweetest boy, very well behaved and decently trainable. But he did have a weakness for small fas critters. He actually ran down and caught a low-flying mallard right out of the air, caught a mouse running through the house once (THAT was sheer chaos!) and almost got booted out of obedience class for being unable to resist a small squeaky Pomeranian fluff ball that ran past him during an exercise. Luckily, he also had a very soft mouth and gentle personality so all the above mentioned animals were unhurt and brought to me and dropped on command.

I'm totally confused about anything "doodle" too. I just fuss them and share in their owners' enthusiasm. I don't ask those questions about people so I feel it's perhaps wrong to ask about dogs too. :)

@@flower-ss2jt lots of working line BCs throw a spaniel in again every few generations if the herding drive gets too neurotic. Not sure how common a practice this is in Scotland but it certainly was very common in NW England. You end up with more liver and white ones, often with some dapple, on their legs when they are close to this having been done. We had one of these and he "grew weird" as a pup. He was all torso for a couple of months until his legs sprouted and caught up. For a few weeks we suspected he might be some sort of corgi and the rescue had been told some fibs.

All interesting information! I read a lot of books set in the UK and lurchers in many of the books but I never knew exactly what they were. My previous dog became mine at 6 1/2 after his first person died suddenly. Like Monty, he was returned ... I adopted and flew Bear from the eastern US to my home in NW US. I didn't realize until maybe a year after Bear was with me that he did not feel comfortable with the transition. Only a bit of hindsight and observance of behavior gave me a bit of a clue. Rescue is tricky! I am fortunate that I work from home and am able to both give lots of attention, walks, play as well as observe. And videos like this are so helpful: hearing other's experiences. Thank you!

She doesn't move around very much, but somehow her hair gets into every nook and cranny of the house!

Aw - what a lovely dog, Monty is - such a shame he never had the chance to say goodbye to his previous keeper, that must have been very hard on him as he's such a sensitive soul - but he was blessed to find you as you understand him and he now has an amazing life. His personality sounds very similar to our late Border, (a rescue, too) who was white & gold with blue eyes - quite retiring, not as forward as a tri-colour or black & tan - never sought conflict. It is very comforting to hear about your dogs and their story - they are part of the family, aren't they.

Long live Monty!! Thank you for rescuing him when he must have been so confused where his beloved person was.
The licking thing (so I’ve been told) is a displacement behavior to help them calm themselves. Thank you for pointing out sighthounds can’t be offlead outside an enclosed area because when they go, there’s no way you’ll catch them. They’re out of earshot faster than you can even holler a recall or try to get their attention to chase YOU as you run the opposite way.

Traditionally a lurcher would be a sight hound-scent hound cross where the hunter wanted the speed and visual acuity of the sight hound with the nose and “go to groundedness” of a scent hound, particularly terriers. How big a dog depended on the needs but most are a whippet- mid sized terrier cross. Sometimes you will get one who’s happy to go for miles, I’ve a friend who uses one on the bigger side for skijoring. The owner is on cross country skis and the dog is in a harness.

idk if you would consider the dog I had a lurcher. he was whippet and lab, Black with a white chest. from the side he looked like he could be pit bull cross but from the front he was so skinny people thought he wasn't being fed. Sam was his name Black Sam. I got him for free. he was kept in a basment and wasn't wanted so for the first few months he would look up every time he herd a noise, It took him a while to realize he could look out windows. They said he had a chewing problem, we never had him chew any thing other than his toys, maybe they didn't have toys 🤷‍♀ he chased cats but never hurt them he would stop when they stopped. Very fast, like you said run out of field before he could reach his full speed, his recall was top notch. In winter we would have quite a bit of snow so I use to go down dirt roads so he could run ( no dust in winter with the snow )

I love Monty he's so beautiful! We used to have a dog that was part German Shepherd and something else (not sure what) but she was a bit shorter than a Shepherd and stockier. She used to walk into the pond at our house, stick her head under the water and root around for big creek rock! She would stay under the water for a crazy amount of time! Then she would come out with a big flat rock usually and she would cry the whole time and carry the rock to the bank and put it down. It was so crazy!!!!!!!!! I have never heard of a dog doing that before. Do you know why they do it? Monty is so awesome.

Loved seeing "The Full Monty!" I have a retired (& sadly, quite elderly) racing greyhound. Monty has that "greyhound face," a little fuller, but those sweet eyes are all grey. That "burst of energy"/"take a long nap" is so totally greyhound. Greys are generally sweet dogs (mine had some issues but is now a sweetie). Tho' only briefly interested in dogs & new people, she LOVED cats & was terribly disappointed that my cat hated her & bullied her every chance he got. But if he was outside & started running, she was after him like a shot. Never caught him & wouldn't, I think, have hurt him if she had. The greatest thing about greyhounds is their quirky, clownish character---Monty showed that when he started to roll over for a belly rub (greyhound tranquilizer) & the funny ears that are up-&-back in any combination. My greyhound does lick fabric, but I think I know why---bad teeth run in their genetics & the licking is somehow a response to tooth pain. The fabric just happens to be convenient, I guess. Did Mony only start this in his later years, & does he have terrible bad breath? Then it may be his teeth. Anyway, he seems very happy with you guys & was adorable with the adorable border collie pups. Thanks for sharing him with us!

I have an Old English Sheepdog. She licks the wall by her bed, she tries to lick my feet (which drives me crazy) and she licks the arms of the lounge chairs. She's quirky, but I love her so much!

I rescued an off the track Greyhound named Haley some time ago. She was a great dog. Her trainer must have spent a lot of time on her, because she had the best recall of any of my well trained dogs .
We lived in an apartment near Harvard Universty, the Charles River, etc. She rode the subway with me to Boston and went to class with me at Univ of MA in Boston.
She was blond, and had a massive muscular body. People used to ask me if she was a blond Doberman Pinscher - she was intimidating to people who might've taken advantage of me. (I felt so safe with her. )
She loved to chase squirrels in the Boston Public Gardens.
🌃At night (2 am) when I'd get home from work, we'd go outside and play "catch me" where I'd tell her to stay while I rode my bike away as fast as I could for a few blocks. Then I'd whistle for her and watch her sprint to me - she could catch up to me incredibly fast! We loved that game!
She was not a "licker" but she was a constant farter - due to the high protein food she needed. 🤦🏼‍♀️Omg! It was so stinky to be in the same room with her at times! 🤣
God, I miss her so much. I'm sure you're as fascinated with Monty as much as I was fascinated with Haley.
    I love your channel.
