  • In the Spring of 1862, a group of Jewish soldiers from Ohio endeavored to observe Passover while serving as part of the Union Army in the forests of West Virginia. With permission from their commanding officer, lieutenant colonel Rutherford B. Hayes, they gathered the requisite supplies and undertook what would be a unique observance of one of the most important holidays in Judaism.
