  • On April 12th, 1861, the Battle of Fort Sumter began near Charleston, SC. This is largely known as the battle that started the American Civil War. What is often not known, however, is that the opposing commanders on that day were both Freemasons. Executive Director of the Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument, Tim Daley, discusses how their mutual membership in the ancient fraternal organization led to a unique show of respect during the calamitous battle.
