  • Chris Gore is a writer, comedian, author and television personality who has built a solid reputation as a hilariously outspoken voice in the entertainment world. As a teenager, Chris founded the brutally honest magazine Film Threat, which began as a fanzine while he was a college student in Detroit. As Film Threat evolved into a respected national magazine, he relocated to Los Angeles. The print magazine was retired in 1997 when it was re-launched as a web site. FilmThreat.com found a huge audience online and was named one of the top five movie web sites by the Wall Street Journal. Chris has appeared as a film expert on MSNBC, E!, CNN, Travel Channel, and Reelz Channel. Chis has also hosted shows on FX, Starz, IFC and G4TV’s Attack of the Show as the show’s film expert. His weekly movie review segment DVDuesday was among the most popular on G4. Chris is also an author, having written The 50 Greatest Movies Never Made and The Complete DVD Book. His book The Ultimate Film Festival Survival Guide is considered the bible of the industry and is required reading at film school.

    Stuff we use:
LENS - Most people ask us what camera we use, no one ever asks about the lens which filmmakers always tell us is more important. This lens was a big investment for us and one we wish we could have made sooner. Started using this lens at the end of 2013 - amzn.to/2tbtmOq
    AUDIO
Rode VideoMic Pro - The Rode mic helps us capture our backup audio. It also helps us sync up our audio in post amzn.to/2t1n2hx
Audio Recorder - If we had to do it all over again, this is probably the first item we would have bought - amzn.to/2tbFlM9
LIGHTS - Although we like to use as much natural light as we can, we often enhance the lighting with this small portable light. We have two of them and they have saved us a number of times - amzn.to/2u5UnHv
COMPUTER - Our favorite computer, we each have one and have used various models since 2010 - amzn.to/2t1M67Z
EDITING - We upgraded our editing suite this year and we’re glad we did! This has improved our workflow and the quality of our work. Having new software also helps when we have a problem, it’s easy to search and find a solution - goo.gl/56LnpM

To all creative people looking to do your craft as a living. Ignore the schools. There's a wealth of information and tutorials online at a fraction of the price. Learn this way. People don't care whether you have a certificate saying you finished something, they care about what you can produce. Work for yourself, don't give your ideas over to others and get swept up in a system doomed to toss you aside. We have the means now to make our stories become just as popular as any big corporation IP, but with 100 times the heart. So, let's get to work.

Spwakong for myself and others I learned more from uni and quicker and deeper than a you tube to tutorial, it also destroyed and lowered the dunning Kruger effect I had as I thought that I knew more than I did so it made more humble.
But yeah in the US the tuition fees can be insane.

@@Hurgardet Also, self teaching is fantastic and always a worthy pursuit. But you can self teach TERRIBLE habits into your skillset without guidance.
A good example is in the realm of programming. I encourage anyone who is interested to learn programming, and you can do a lot with what you can teach yourself from tutorials, but the odds are very good, unless you are a true prodigy, your are never going to be as good or efficient at is as somebody who spent four years at a good college earning a CS degree from good instructors.
Another good example is lawyers. Legal Eagle did an excellent video where he explains that you should NOT attempt to read all your law books without guidance from an instructor on what truly important and what is not. Because you won't know the difference at first.
Formal education is one of the best thing in life in that, you get out what you put into it . . . And I can tell you, I didn't feel my college experience was a complete waste, but I can look back and see the opportunities I let pass me by in regards to institutional knowledge, the 'tribal experience' of the profession I chose to be educated in. The education system can't make you do that, only you can do that.

@@Bustermachine The examples you cite are no-brainers. I do not believe that anyone can become a lawyer without having gone to university and taken formal examinations. And even in writing, while I believe a degree is not necessary, I do think that people who don't have a strong grasp of the English language would benefit from formal education. Because whether anyone likes it or not, good English is required for good writing. But there are areas where a degree is not required.

I really like his comments about passion. I’m not judging anyone for the choices that they make, but for the life of me, I don’t understand how someone can spend decades of their life doing something they aren’t passionate about. I would go absolutely insane. This is one of the reasons why I never finished college. In fact, I’m the first person in my family not to graduate from college. If I pursued areas of education that interested me, such as creative writing, philosophy, or film, I knew I would probably never be able to pay off the debt, but I just wasn’t passionate enough to pursue more practical endeavors. Unless you’re planning on being a teacher, getting a degree in the arts usually doesn’t advance your career prospects, and although I have a knack for giving lectures, I have no desire to grade or discipline students. While trying to make a living as a writer, I know the practical thing for me to do would be to secure a day job, but I just can’t subject myself to that kind of psychological anguish. It would be the death of my artistic acuities.

Only very recently have I finally accepted what my subconscious mind has been telling me: I never want to work for someone else, and I want to make a living writing novels (or other fiction). If not novels, then as a musician or an artist.

I was DELIGHTED to hear Mr. Gore say, "Don't get into debt." This is so important. And he mentioned credit cards as well as student loans. If you want to go down the non-traditional route, financial literacy and financial security are key. Artists who understand this can not only survive bad periods, but also thrive financially. Debt will wreck your financial security and that drains creativity in the long run-- even if it feels like an investment at the time. Just ask all the traditionally-minded former students slaving away at a 9-5 to pay off debt. I feel as though 9-5s would gain a better reputation if people weren't chained to those jobs just to pay off debt. So, great advice! And I agree about the deficiencies in schooling. I went through school being trained both at home and at school to go down a traditional path. And now, I am dedicated to becoming a full-time novelist while currently being self-employed as a tutor who doesn't have a degree (never finished it). Life never turns out the way you expect. Great video!

To be fair to educators, a lot of them have been banging the drum about this problem with the education system as well.
And the problem isn't that there's an education system that's teaching us calculus we'll never use. The problem is that the education system doesn't teach how to learn.
And it doesn't teach how to learn (though plenty of teachers do try) because McGraw Hill and Pierson Publishing can't monetize 'teaching you how to learn'. They can monetize their standardized test plans, and their textbooks, and their lesson plans.
Edit : And there is real value in institutional education . . . if it's done right. Heck, one of the biggest tragedies in my mind is how community colleges have become little more than pipelines for four year colleges when there original purpose was . . . to educate the community.

I am subscribed to another CZcams channel where a lot of people have said the same thing. The military is not my chosen path, but that sounds like a fantastic deal. And no debt!

I love his thought of avoiding debt. I wouldn't do student loans, but I am not sure how to start making a film without doing so. I'm overdrawn at the bank every paycheck. How do all these film makers do it when they are just starting out? I hear they were dirt poor, but I never hear the story about how they made the money for their first movie.

If you're overdrawn at every paycheck, then for the love of God, do not get into more debt. There have to be some low-cost options out there. I know little about film, so I can't give you any advice. Part of the problem is the limited number of grants available for creatives. It's always so difficult to secure finance because these paths are valued less (and the big bucks are usually wasted on other things, such as financing the student loan racket, the credit card racket, and other banes of society's existence).

I mean schools are for someone who wants to do something related to those topics. For example I want to be a filmmaker. And my parents are wasting their money for a wrong thing.

It’s ironic, George Lucas may have gone to USC but Spielberg went to Cal State Long Beach.

What's more ironic is that Lucas didn't know that he wanted to be a filmmaker, and only went to the entrance exam because a friend asked him to go, and thought it was a school for stills photography. Then he went on to revolutionise cinema (twice, if not 3 times) and change pop culture.

You mean paying 80 thousand dollars a year to watch movies and go to film school isn't worth it because you'll be lucky if you aren't hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt being a ticket taker at Disneyland. I think i've heard this story before.

Great advice from a guy who has made only a handful of movies (ones that certainly aren't memorable) and mostly earns his bread and butter by hanging out with incels, running a little read blog, and having a cry about so-called woke culture on mediocre channels like Film Courage.
