$130 for an unfinished Ubisoft game that you don’t own that pushes condescending identity politics in my badass fantasy rpgs. No thank you
it’s not identity politics. What i like about the use of Yasuke in this is that they aren’t shoving a black character down your throat and making a black character for the sake of it. Yasuke was a REAL person and was the first and only black samurai and i love that they’re making a game in japan, while allowing a protagonist to based on fact from the past. i don’t see the problem with that.

well if u open ur eyes its pretty evident that they have 2 protagonists for a reason, the woman is gonna be one that u can stealth around with and avoid combat and black guy is gonna be ur run in guns blazing kinda shit. it pretty obvious
Oda Nobunaga recruited commoners to fight alongside his samurai; they were called ashigaru. This is how Hashiba Hideyoshi (later Toyotomi Hideyoshi), a peasant got his start. They were peasants and slaves conscripted to fight. For anyone that doesn’t know, Hideyoshi was the man that unified Japan and personally avenged Nobunaga when he was betrayed by Akechi Mitsuhide. Hideyoshi was Nobunaga’s loyalest man and a brilliant tactician, and it took over 2 years of service before he was made a samurai.
Yasuke only served Oda for 15 months. He was a page and sandal bearer, and was allowed to carry a short sword. It’s disrespectful and disgraceful to think Yasuke, a foreigner, was promoted faster than Hideyoshi. An ashigaru is all Yasuke was. Nobunaga’s ashigaru were well equipped and trained compared to others, but that does NOT by any stretch of the imagination make them samurai.
Mitsuhide didn’t even grant Yasuke an honorable death alongside his master. He was called a slave and animal, and was given away to a church. That’s not how a samurai is treated.
Sure there are a few “reputable” sources that claim Yasuke was a samurai but at the same time they all admit there’s hardly any information on him. It’s clearly their attempt at uplifting the man. In fact, Nobunaga kept him around to show off to people and routinely humiliated him. Nobunaga is one of my favorite historical characters but he wasn’t very nice lol. He was betrayed by Mitsuhide because of his brutality towards Buddhists, including women and children (Mitsuhide was a Buddhist). I hope people take some time to educate themselves on this fascinating period of time, and not what Ubi makes up. Also, yes, screw this price tag.
Yes, of course. Because assassin's creed has always been about historical accuracy and realism.

Yeah it's awful. Same with having diversity in the Vikings show. It's just comedic pandering. Africans were not everywhere around the world no matter who's grandma told them so and when they ended up somewhere else, it was not glamorous or romanticized as these hacks writers want to believe.
Making a black samurai is just disrespectful to Japan. It was done purely for DEI money. Asmon is right about it not being the biggest issue with this shit game, but it’s still a big fucking if issue. Blackwashing of history in media needs to stop.

There is literally no historical Japanese document from the Sengoku period (extensive material) who suggests there was a black man Kashin. Samurai is impossible, only nobles and notorious Plebs could ever be samurai. Anyone justifying this is simply dumb.
During the Sengoku
Jidai, the word samurai simply described a
profession. Even though the term
"Samurai" was present during the Sengoku
Jidai, it wasn't a term widely used or as
glamorized as much as it is today. It's the
equivalent of substituting the word
"Warrior" for "Soldier." Some alternatives
were used in place of Samurai such as
"Bushi" which means "Warrior" in Japanese
or ranks like "Ashigaru' which means "Light
Feet" in Japanese, and then Ranks based
on the Military structure unique to each
clan, or depending on the job each recruit
was designated they would be given a
specific name for that Rank. So, just
because no one said he was a Samurai
doesn't mean he wasn't because the term
was not commonly utilized in specifics.
You'd have to wait 20-40 Years before the
word "Samurai" becomes used in official
documents referencing a caste after the
time of Yasuke.
According to the Japanese
documentation, Yasuke was made into a
Bushi or a Warrior, but we don't know
whether or not that made him a Samurai
because we could use it in the sense that
all Bushi are Samurai but not all Samurai
are Bushi or all Warriors are Samurai, but
not all Samurai are Warriors because the
term is broad. So, since we know that
Yasuke was a Bushi then he was a Warrior
and not some slave or pet.
We do know that Yasuke was used as a
Bodyguard and Weapons-Bearer for
Nobunaga which was not disgraceful but
an honor as this was usually a position
given to members close to the Shogun or
in this case De Facto Shogun, and would've
classified him as a Hõkõshū(High-Ranking
Samurai Guard) or Gokenin(Close
Retainers) by occupation which was a
class of Samurai who were usually used as
bodyguards for the Daimyo or Shogun. By
that occupation, Yasuke would've
technically been a Samurai.

For us Japanese, it is outrageous that UBIsoft says "Yasuke was a real life legendary samurai" to shove a black guy protagonist into the feudal Japan setting when the truth is that Yasuke was not samurai. Only upper rank bushi 武士 was samurai 侍 before Edo period. And the condition to become bushi, you need to have a surname and long sword. Yasuke had no surname and no long katana. Yasuke only got a shortest katana. Even peasants were allowed to have short katana in feudal Japan. So it is doubtful if Yasuke was even a bushi. But UBIsoft lies to the world that Yasuke was a legendary samurai warrior in history.
And whenever Yasuke was out in town, people flocked to see him since people had never seen any black person before. And some people got injured just by flocking to see him. This is the reason why Nobunaga kept Yasuke by his side. It was just to show off.

I definitely don't get his take here. That's an L for asmongold. But the biggest L is for Ubisoft putting a black character in a Japan based game for social points.
True true. That point I can agree with their genetics make it possible for some slightly over the top physical feats. But everything thing else bad with the game highly outweighs that.
The entire girl assassin take is beside the point. The game is made by a Corpa company for MTX money, therefore there's not even any need to start the "biology" argument. If anything, I probably see an agile girl climbing walls and stuff way easier than a 6' 200 lbs dude with a sword, 4 pistols, 16 smoke grenades on his belt, and a metal contraption on his forearms. Girl gymnasts and rock climbers exist, you know? If it's a stealth game, it doesn't have to be about kicking ass and tanking (although she probably will be as OP in combat as every protagonist before her, including other girls like in AC Liberation, that's not really as much of a "realism" thing if you can get shot with a musket 3 times point blank and continue fighting), plus guards are usually pretty heavy and wear armour, a girl with some knives could easily stab them a dozen times through joints. The entire argument comes off as a bit sexist with "who are we kidding here, it's just biology", although I don't think Asmond is usually that sexist, probably poor phrasing. I definitely see how Twitter friends would get mad at the biology statement, sounds a bit far-fetched. IDGAF what gender or race the protagonists are, although Japanese people could get upset at misrepresentation, I care way more about the quality of the story and gameplay, which we all know will be on par with Ubisoft standards (shite)
A black man made a servant of Nobunaga for a few months with absolutely no historical proof of ever fighting a single battle, receiving any training, or even knowing the Japanese language is now romanticized as being a legendary samurai and shoehorned into a game whose franchise self advertises as based on history. Then the additional slap in the face that is Ubisoft's monetization practices. Indicative of the times.
It wasn't a few months, it was over a year until his death. He could speak enough Japanese for basic communication as he was allowed to roam towns while as a retainer.
And though no one said he thought or any accounts, there is written proof he accompanied Nobonaga during his conquest of territory and Yasuke was said to have warn samurai garb.
And to be perfectly honest the history of Samurai and ninja/shinobi is romanticised to the point of farce. But usually the Japanese do it, so it's ok😂

Idk if they either picked The one well known Black Samuria in history for quick bait and easy clapback on the people who are always mad about race swapping; or if they just saw the setting but still wanted to legitamately find a natural way to incorporate black representation.
I am only really apposed to the idea of rage bait. Because, at this point, it is just anti-consumer. (But what do you expect from the company that said "Gamers should get more used to not owning their games.") Give use good plots, dont give us patronizing pandoring. While stoking culture wars for free advertisement and abusing identity politicals in bad faith as a shield from the legitimate criticisms. It is a blight on society. Seeks to tear us apart for profit, rather than build the bridges where we can.
But tho there is nothing wrong with getting more black representation. Why find an excuse to single out the first asian region in the game series to not have its fair representation like anyone else?
If this is for black representation, why didn't you have the one Assasins Creed game that took place in Africa have a black character? I know Egyptians look more Middle Eastern. But it was a setting no one would question, if there were a bunch of black people in that time period. Also, if it was truly about the representation, than why does the first female and black assasins have to share the same title and split the representation?
I can never know for reasonably certainty. But kinda feels like they only cared about black and female representation when they could weaponize and polarize it for their own uses.
Also, kinda feels like everyone follows in lockstep, like journos here, to go "They just hate it because it is woke." While ignoring the valid criticism. Because of pure internet tribalism. $70 is a normal price for games. I paid $100 for Tekken 8. It came with the base game, cosmetics, and Season 1 pass. It's quite normal.
I think the fact they picked Yasuke is very important and downplaying it is very detrimental to the fact that they’re trying to warp history. This was the spotlight for an Asian protagonist.
Nioh did get ripped apart when announced because of white lead William. However, the game was a success because the gameplay was solid. William was in armor most of the time and you only saw him in FMVs. We all know what we are getting with AC Shadow, a bloated open world, enemies that are always as strong if not stronger than you, a half baked story you lose interest in 1/4 of the way into it, passable combat, stealth and RPG mechanics and a ton of reused quests that swap out the asset you have to fetch. If the gameplay is good, the character designs will not matter.
Plus there’s hard evidence that William Adam’s existed and even more evidence that he’s one of the first English samurai’s

In an IGN video they had a Japanese professor talking about this, she said she was cool with the game having Yasuke as a main playable character. Having an outsider character can sometimes be a good way to provide some players with info about stuff that they might be unfamiliar with. This is a common trope used in movies as well and it can be quite effective. The outsider is able to ask a lot of questions about things, and have things explained to them without it feeling contrived or like bad writing.
If I remember right the Afro Samurai manga was created by a Japanese guy, I wonder how he would feel about the AC game having a black samurai? Maybe he'd be cool with it too. Is it wise to assume that Japanese people are all the same, and that they all hate a black samurai being in the game?
It seems like no one complained when AC: Black Flag had a non-native playable character, Kenway was a Welsh pirate who was not a native to the environment where the game was set. If that's ok then I don't see why it's a problem for AC: Shadows to have an optional non-native playable character, especially in a game series that has never been that historically accurate: AC Odyssey has Medusa, Cerberus etc. AC Syndicate had batman style grapple hooks in Victorian London lol etc.

That made me realize that I've never actually cared at all about the historical accuracy of Assassin's Creed games. The story missions were almost always a chore to do because I just wanted to play a fun game instead of watching some cutscenes with characters talking about politics, justice etc. At the very least, it has been mildly interesting and maybe made the kills of the villains in the games a bit more satisfying, but other than that, no priority on story whatsoever. I just want to have fun in a cool setting. These are games and games are meant to be played. That's why I won't really care at all about the samurai being black, I just want to take out every enemy I come across John Wick-style.

On top of that Oda Nobunaga ordered him be followed and guarded every time he was allowed to visit any town. Additionally, Yasuke was not given armor or land. He was only given a short sword (aka a Wakizashi, which is about a foot to two feet long) for a weapon. He was made to carry around Oda Nobunaga's things when Oda traveled. This does not make a good "Assassin" story.
I'm pretty sure African males at that time were tall and slim with an Afro, not buff with dreads.
Both are a problem.
The price is outrageous and the other is tokenism, cultural appropriation and political activism
How is a black MC in Assassin's Creed tokenism, cultural appropriation and political activism? I don't see the problem.
@@Diogo85 I'm not taking the bait.
There are fair arguments to be made for the first two but not for political activism. Simply featuring a game with Yasuke in his appropriate setting that most people know him for isn't political activism
@@lomborg4876 I'm not baiting, I'm merely asking a question and stating that I don't see the problem.
@@user-tx6ug2mm3d Absolutely not. The fact that some think otherwise because of a character being different is weird to me.
I agree with a lot of points brought up about the game from Asmongold here however there is one that I will dispute in particular.
Saying that the female character's ability to take on multiple male enemies is unrealistic is completely missing the point of the character's inclusion.
Bro, she's a literal fucking ninja, Shinobis and Kunoichi were never meant to face Samurai head-on. Because none of them would stand a chance. Sure men are generally physically stronger than women (not more flexible or agile though), but if you actually watch the damn trailer, you can see that she kills them stealthily there's no amount of musculature that can save you from your neck being sliced from an unexpected enemy so what is even the point of bringing biology in this argument ?
