Michael Scott almost seems like a writer's challenge done on a bet. "I'm going to make the most ignorant, annoying, self centered person possible and make you love him so much you don't want him to leave. Easy, I'll just make him the underdog, right? Wrong, the boss and the antagonist."
Boss, antagonist, protagonist, endearing and ignorant, annoying and lovable. Michael is truly a complex character.
Because his personality isn't just "ignorant, annoying, and self centered", he just has a need to be liked (just like his need to be praised). Beneath the surface level of his constant attempts to be liked by others, like by doing good things for appearances, acting smart, or making good but impossible promises, he also has a side that genuinely just does want to be a good person. He's a lovable character because when he realizes the errors of his ways, he does a lot to fix them. For example, when he realized Oscar was gay, yes, he acted immaturely and was somewhat shallow, but eventually he went very far to try and fix his mistake. If the episode just ended with Oscar mad at him and with Michael not caring that he hurt his friend, you would not like Michael. That's why he feels out of character in some episodes, like the one with his birthday. We realize Michael wouldn't disregard Kevin's possible skin cancer like that, because as shallow as he is, he still cares about the people around him.
This should include the scene when darryl and michael sing in the car after returning from dropping holly

Every "God!!" moments from michael compilation is what I ask. Like the one where he tries to ride Oscar's bike and crashes into the car "Oh god!!".
