I was 69 years old before I tried to middle finger flip a knife. I thought it was impossible but started to exercise my fingers to strengthen them and eventually managed to flick the Spydie Tenacious. Now at the age of 74 I can flick all 53 of my Spydercos and I'm becoming good at flicking non Zero Tolerance knives with thumb studs. Good video.
What a fun video! The reason I looked up how to do this is because with your knife reviews, when you flick open the knife, you make it look like the knife is assisted which I think looks cool and demonstrates your comfort level with handling the blade.
My first attempt at a Spydie flick was with a Para3, at work, in our control office. And the Para3 went flying past the head of a coworker and into a filing cabinet.
LMFAO
Lmao. Sucks for him
Nice to see when I googled reverse flick knife your video was like the first one. I got my first folding knife thanks to you. I watched your run down of all the various price levels and went for the best of the inexpensive (QSP Penguin in D2).
I have so much fun sitting around just deploying it over and over again. I was having trouble getting it to deploy and was using a bit of wrist action to get it to properly deploy and lock until I watched your video here. Now I've gone from noob to someone who looks like they know what they're doing by the time I got to the end of your video.
Damn it... Now I'm already considering buying a second knife. LOL.
Flick upward at a 45 degree angle from the blade end of the knife. I've found that most people that can't seem to do it are flicking straight outward at a 90 degree angle perpendicular to the blade end of the knife, or at some angle greater than 45 degrees. If still having difficulty when flicking at a 45 degree angle from the blade end of the knife, choke up on the knife some and move your thumb slightly closer to the blade end.
When I first received my spyderco, that’s the first thing I practiced,.. and practiced lol. Could flick with thumb no issues . Had to find the sweet spot. 🤘🏼
Just got my first Spyderco and this video helped me within one min of watching it do the reverse flick. Note, 3rd knife in 3 months due to you're influence! ;). 1st was green micarta Elementum, 2nd XM-18 3" battle bronze, 3rd Para 3 S110V Burple
Most of my knives have flippers. Just got one with a flipper and a fuller. Couldn’t figure out how to finger flick until I watched this video. Thanks man
7 minutes in to the video and I'm flicking my brand new lil native. Sweet!
😊👍
Don't be silly... You can't flick a lil native...
Wait, I just flicked mine
Got my first Spyderco today. Spent an hour TRYING to flick. Found this, and succeeded in the first 2 minutes of watching. Like taking ones first steps. ;)
Hey thats great! Glad you got it figured out 😊👍
Literally everyone... LITERALLY EVERYONE !! Should invest in a Paramilitary 2 or Para 3. S30V was the "Hottest" EDC knife Steel for over 10 years... A S30V PM2 or Para 3 is a great EDC knife that'll do everything anyone could reasonably expect a folder to do. It doesn't have a triad lock, but it'll do trust me 😂😂
Then if you like that maybe you could get one in S110V... then one in Rex 45, then one in Maxamet... then one in S45VN, then one in M4, then one in 52100, then one in S90V, then one in... just get one in every steel... yes I know I have a problem and NO ! I dont want help... well unless you have one in a different steel lol.
Thankyou! You made this very simple describing how building upward force will help the blade open once it breaks free! 👏
Super helpful. Just watching you do it up close once was enough.
I was having trouble doing this with the a.d 20.5. Never knew how to do it in the first place. About 3:45 in I got it. Thanks!
IMO, the best advantage of the middle finger Spyde flick is that the knife handle doesn’t need any repositioning in my palm after the flick opening. All I need to do afterwards is just wrap my fingers quickly and easily around the handle and I’m now in a proper cutting grip. Once I realized that, I almost never do a thumb flick that requires a knife reposition afterwards anymore.
The tactical advantage is that your foe will be so dazzled by your flicking prowess that he will ask you how you do it. Seriously though, this was a fun video.
My therapist: do you think your obsession with knives stems from perceived inadequacies in the bedroom?
Me: No! I mean, I do have a Lil' Native, but I can Spidey flick an Opinel.
One of the most gnarly knives to reverseflick is the St Nicks exclusive Jester with its tiny ass 1.93 wicked sharp CPM 4V blade.
Hey, thanks for explaining it the way you did. I've watched 17 other vids on the subject and I did it right away after watching This.
Just got my first or second nice knife in the mail today the para 2. My first nice knife would be my delica. I could not flick my delica open for nothing but after figuring watching this I flicked my para open on the second try. So playing around I was able to flick it open with all fingers even my pinky. So then I went back to my delica and now I can flick it open too! Thanks for the helpful video. I realized my my prolite was flickable but really difficult at first. It has a lot of resistance but if you get a really strong preload with your thumbnail at flip at about 11:30-11:00 bam it can fly open. That’s a hard one to do.
Funny, been a subscriber for a while now, never realized you did a video about this. Personally, the "spidey" flick I have my hand in a "spider-man" style position(basically, the way you do it), whereas my reverse flick, I'm holding the knife right around the pivot between thumb and forefinger, using my middle finger flicking ou, as opposed to up, to deploy the blade. Whatever is safe and looks cool though, really.✌️🖖🤘
I was having trouble flicking some Byrd knives even though I can do it with easier knives (like honey badger knives) and I am now able to spidey flick the Cara Cara 2 with your tip on the direction of the flick. I've been waiting for a Tenacious lightweight for too long and got impatient so I got the Byrd knives while waiting. Thanks!
I did it with my Kershaw Leek, it takes awhile and its not consistent because the frame lock is right next to the stud. Left handed is consistent, my right hand is dominant though. But like you said just press up from the bottom and use the middle finger nail. Some of the other knives you have are probably much easier to do it.
Most Civivi knives and Kubey knives are pretty affordable and easy to reverse flick, as are Sencut knives.
Thanks for explaining! I've been sitting here and practicing with my Ganzo Sdyperco clone (the large axis lock one), CJRB Frack and Resource. I can do it more consistently and confidently now but do need to train my middle finger strength and dexterity. What I still don't get is: why the middle finger? I mean, as opposed to the typically more dexterous trigger/index finger? I started out doing flicks with that finger, as it felt more natural. So, what's the advantage of doing it with the middle finger?
Hey MC,great vid for the newer peeps in the knife game also I just purchased a microtech socom elite manual, ever since I saw it on your channel I've had the "itch" for it and after many months I found one for a great deal and oh does scratching that itch feel so good, can't wait to get it in hand, sorry I just wanted to tell someone,I'm excited.much love ♥️
Sold my Para 3 S35vn DLC way back. Because of your videos, I will get a Maxamet P3 and use my Flytanium brass scales lying around lol
Thank you so much for this!! I was never able to do it till now!!
Got a spyderco, and I’ve ruin all of my right hand fingers’ because I’ve been spidey flicking with every finger i can put on
I bought a Spyderco tenacious a couple weeks ago and took it back to very next day I just didn't like it but I feel like I didn't give it enough of a chance I'm a Benchmade guy and it just didn't feel right I'm thinking of buying another one this time a bit higher end I do like the actress lock so maybe the mannix
Cool video MC! I picked up the middle finger flick fairly quickly after a bit of frustration! Took a bit longer for the index finger flick though. I have much practice as you upload every day!
Yeahhh baby, not super comfy on the Chaparral but it feels so cool to do
Good vid. You need to make more tutorials based on single topic
I love this. I can flick my Catshark but, because locking knives are illegal to carry in the UK, fast opening a slip joint knife is almost impossible.
The scales on the PM2...where did you get them.? Absolutely beautiful! I’ve been flicking for years an unfortunately I’m getting arthritis in my middle finger. Don’t know if it’s from flicking or the one finger salutes! Using my pointer finger now.
Exercise it every day. Squeeze a ball. Use it in a way that makes it hurt the most. The pain will go away in about a month.
Got a para 3 for Christmas and this helps thanks 👍
It's just about being able to it's my fidget wheel only a knife instead thats why I wanted to learn for the fun of it. thank you Master Obi-Wan
I just spent the last few days holding lots of folding knives and I can’t even thumb flick open a knife. Idk how you do it. It opened really slow for me so there’s gotta be a trick.
Im new to knives. i own 2 tacknife otfs a crkt ceo and symmetry and lastly i just got a factor v2. It does have a smaller slit but i cant get the blade father than half way i just cant get the momentum i cant move that findher very fast plus the blade i have doesnt let you build up any pressure as the knife has a weak detent so it pops out. Can you recommend and finger excersizes we can do to build up the finger strength...
I’ve seen people do this with a Spyderco Dragonfly. For me it’s too small for me to hold securely and flick strong enough to fully open the blade. It only partially opens and I’m kind of scared keep trying thinking my middle finger is going to flick into the blade somehow. I can do it with a Delica.
I love it when they say I can’t flick a lockback. With practice, I can track open my native, endura, and delicas! Gots to exercise the bird finger. 😝
I got something out of this video, I am now able to spidy flick the maxamet para 3 that I got in the mail lastnight, thank you
Just figured out how to do it with my rat 2. My finger isn't quite strong enough to get it everytime hey I'll get there. Almost cut myself a few times and nearly dropped too, but it's fun.
i just spydiopened my brand new para 3 after this video, it has not btoken in yet, its very tight buy i still manage to flick it 7 out of 10 times :D
I figured it out how to do it on my delica 4 lmao not easy though, waiting on my manix 2..
I want the manix 2 too 👍🏼
I got it a couple days ago, it's nice, also ordered the left handed pm2.. 😁
@@xK1llSw1tchx nice! 🙌🏽 looks like it'd be a hefty solid knife, so im waiting to get one too
We have all been there before, thanks for the great video.
You should do a video on which clip you think is better for the PM2 and the Para 3 and so on. MXG or LynchNW etc. Great video by the way.
I can reverse flick a tuff light, I'm. 60, so much for needing an auto, though that day may come, still have a bur under my saddle from the fathers day vid
I love reverse flicking my zt0393glcf. Why I want the eklipse the thumb studs are usable.
On my manix 2, I rest my thumb about an inch below the hole, pushing on the blade. It creates a lot of pressure so when I flip it, it really snaps out. I purposely try to see how hard I can make it flip out and get that "crack" sound. Jeez, holes, hard, and crack all in one comment. 🤔
Man, thanks for this video. Just got a civivi ortis, and was frustrated with my problem trying to flick. After this, I realized I just needed to move down to the narrower part of the hole.
BTW, is it a "spidey flick" coming from Spyderco, or because your hand looks like spider man throwing web? 🤔
I find the index the best and moat secure
also i have a question. why is it you can buy a good knife with g10 handle and s30v steel for under 150$. but for the benchmade crooked river it has g10 handle yet its around 250cad$. is their different levels of g10 that can make the price differ so much . or its just the name and the steel . ?
actuallly upon further investigation tyhe g10 model is actually the highest priced one benhcmade has for crooked river. and the other models even for osborne the g10 model is 350$cad. and the aluminum handled one is 250$cad... so whats with the g10...
I have a salt 2.. I can't figure it out
excellent- a practical tutorial no doubt
Yes I throw my brand new pm2 trying to flick it hahaha
I dropped my pm2 and broke the tip
@@juliansanchez249 oh no
great video! I did one also of the cool ways to open these knives. So fun!
why did you show me the crooked river... they look so much bigger online when i go to look. but seeing that its not as big as I assumed, I have to buy one. so thanks . I just finished spending 800 in knives lol
Well there's a full size and a mini. Make sure you buy the right one!
My friends and I spent all of high school flicking each other in the ear. I was the champ. I can spydie flick every knife (locking folders) that I have with either hand. Including my 4Max! Lmao!!
All fun & games till you get flicked in negative weather
Knives are much more enjoyable and fun when u can Spydie flip or flick.
Just bought my first Hinderer, the Eklipse with tri way, super stoked about it!!! I was wondering, where do you get your parts for you hinderers? From the official website or from a custom maker??? I need to know!!
Check the description. Theres a section for Hinderer knives, and a link for "parts and accessories". 😊
I reverse flick all of my Spyderco knives , my rat2 ,and bugout my Byrd harrier 2 is a little harder because of the shape of the hole throws me off
You alright, bro? You’re putting out a TON of content in a short period of time
Just checkin’ in
Well I've been going at this same pace for about 5 months now 😆
Metal Complex keep doing what you do, bro! 🤘. I’m loving it all
this is how i default open my kershaw blur. I just need a para 3 now . . . if only i wasnt poor . ..
Was never able to do this and then five minutes after I got my first spyderco I was able to do this with any of my knives.
Wonderful video, thanks ! :)
Is that the DLT XM18? I had that for a while then sold it. I couldn't justify the price.
Thats actually an XM 24. There are many, many DLT exclusive XM 18s though. The 24 here was purchased through USA Made Blade 👍
Oh yeah... where were you 3 months ago? LOL!
Not a pro tip but for me the index finger works better on backlock knives like the endura series and with these a little wrist flick also helps to fully Open it
The spyderco sliverax by far the easiest.
Spydie-flick is sooo 2019... 2020 is all about the pickle-flick
Is it me, or are the Axis lock knives almost as easy as the spyderco's... especially griptilian 550-1... the most satisfying thumb stud I've found to do this on is the (and the knife that's been seeing alot of pocket time... and EDCi oil) Benchmade 560bk-1 "Super Freek" M4, mine came fairly tight... I couldn't get that thing to fall shut... it takes ALOT of wrist... more often than not Wrist, arm and shoulder commitment
The MEAT of your finger
I spydy flick my spyderco shaman and my medford micro marauder nearly always.
