    Godzilla is one of the most recognizable monsters in film, and he should be. After all, he is part of the longest running film franchise in the world, but you might be surprised to learn that his history in literature is just as prolific. Without his giant footsteps paving the way, we wouldn’t have the female kaijū Mothra, who is perhaps even more beloved.
    In this episode, Dr. Zarka shows how kaijū are deeply rooted in past events in Japan including the deployment of nuclear weapons there during World War II. She explains how both Godzilla and Mothra serve as metaphors and looks at how these monsters continue to shed light on social history. #godzilla #mothra #kaiju #MonstrumPBS

    Mothra is definitely a standout. She’s one of my favorite kaiju in the series. She’s just so different from the rest of the monsters, being herald as a goddess of sorts. Unlike the rest, she’s more consciously aware of the world around her, wanting to protect it, which is simply awesome. Also, her design is just cute! Lol

    Mothra's pretty significant in a lot of different ways, but for my money, I've always been a Megaguirus fangirl. She's the singular villain of her movie, but she defies all of our expectations for such: Instead of being huge and overwhelming Godzilla, she's half his size. Instead of having beam weapons out the wazoo, she has super speed and a vampiric drain. Instead of being super tough, she's just quick and intelligent enough to know how not to get hit, and how to land her own, far more devastating blows. And yet she's still strong enough to pick Godzilla up and carry him around!
    Plus, she has the most adorable smile~

    However I really wished you mentioned how Mothra is a symbol of rebirth. She dies in many movies only for her or her children to rise again. Mothra gets killed a lot but never really “dies.”

      It also greatly depends on the translation, for example Rodan (row-dan) has been pronounced as Raydon (ray-don) in different English dubs of later movies. So the English names are varied. But she not only used but correctly pronounced Gojira, which is impressive as most people don't when they make a video like this.
      And yes the original English release of king of the monsters was pretty bad, find yourself a direct translation of the original. It's much better

    As a lifelong kaiju fan, very nice video. But I do have to say that I think you were a bit too hard on the 1956 American edit of _Gojira._
    The editing that spliced Burr in is surprisingly good in much of the film, though, admittedly, very noticeable in some areas; and the antinuclear message, though watered down from the original, is still very harsh by the standard of almost any American monster movie of the time. All and all, it may be inferior to '54's _Gojira,_ but '56's _Godzilla, King of the Monsters!_ is a very good film in its own right and an excellent companion piece to the original.

      @scaper8 Před 5 lety +1

      @Aspiring Marauder I don't know, I think most fans have a pretty good opinion on '56 and it's only getting a better reputation as time goes by and the Legendary MonsterVerse is near universally loved. While "America bad" may have been the default position, I really don't think that's been the case for the last ten to fifteen years now, and that opinion is steadily losing ground.

      She's definitely faking, but I agree she's good at it. From the point where she pronounces Ghidorah with a soft G though, it became obvious that she actually isn't a fan of the movies and is just reading a script. Nobody who's actually watched the movies would make that mistake

    Forgot about the 2016 Japanese's reboot? Shin Gojira bears the heavy metaphor like the original 1954 but based on the 2011 incident of the nuclear power plant "accident" in the earthquake. This is one of the most important key factors to Godzilla. Many sees Godzilla as an awesome creature, but truly Godzilla represents darker things and a symbol than just an uproaring fan favourite.

    Great video!! I love Gojira and Mothra and they are my favourite kaiju’s. It’s interesting though that you mentioned the film’s references to Nagasaki and nuclear bombs but didn’t mention another more recent incident that inspired the movie. Lucky Dragon 5 was a fishing ship which was contaminated by nuclear fallout at bikini atoll in 1954 due to US nuclear testing. This was mere months before the release of the movie Gojira. This incident is even referenced in the movie as the first ship to encounter Gojira is named Lucky dragon.

    I'd love to see a documentary on Gamera (Japanese: ガメラ Hepburn: Gamera) the fictional monster originating from a series of Japanese films of the same name. Gamera is depicted as a massive, fire-breathing, prehistoric monster resembling a turtle, mutated by exposure to nuclear weapons. In the first film, Gamera is portrayed as aggressive and destructive, though he also saves the life of a young Japanese boy. As the film series progressed, Gamera took on a less malevolent role, becoming a defender of humanity, and especially of human children, from extraterrestrial races and other giant monsters.
