Yeah. He should listen to the album "pies descalzos". She was more like a pop rock singer back then and that's the album that made her huge in latin america. She took latin America by storm with "pies descalzos" . And also " donde están los ladrones ", the second album. These were the first two famous albums. She already had her style, the throaty voice, the baby voice and the yoddling (i guess some lebanese style), but she just didnt use those gimmicks as much. You got to hear her clear voice a lot more. And the lyrics were on point too. That's the Shakira i fell in love with, before they dyed her hair blonde and changed her quite a bit to enter the north american market. The crossover was really successfull and I'm glad she made it worldwide but sometimes I still miss my old black-haired Shakira :).
Sam said hes sure she has good vocal coaches helping her and that shes not doing any harm to her voice with her stylistic choices. But she actually had to postpone a whole tour because of her voice. I guess she was not used to so many rehearsals anymore (after having her children) and she started doing too much too fast...
It was funny when he said that first he would faint and then... Lol...

@@anapmusic I only became aware of Shakira, when she entered the US market (in my case European, but outside of Spain you used to rarely hear songs in Spanish) with Whenever, Wherever - and she did have that style, but she didn't use it ALL the time. I actually like her and most of all respect her, but I wish she wouldn't sing 100% with this altered style of her. Thank you for the names of her albums from before, I will make sure to listen to them.

I think Shak found her signature sound very early in her career, she has a unique sound regardless of how good she is as a singer and it clearly works for her. Her voice isn't that distinctive, but it's the style she's singing in that makes it sound so unique and that's what people in the music industry want to hear, someone who can stand out from the crowd, like if a dude who looks like he belongs in a heavy metal band starts belting out opera songs like he's Pavarotti. Nobody can replace Shakira's unique sound, just like nobody can sing like Cher. Cher performed on the Tonight Show with several actresses who are playing her in a Broadway show, while the actresses did their best at trying to imitate her unique voice, once she stepped out on stage it was unmistakable which voice belonged to her.

I loved your notes about her style!
I have a question that might not be your cup of tea, but it popped in my mind while you were discussing the “throaty” sounds: could her choice to use these rougher sounds be because she’s singing in Spanish here?
Spanish has rougher phonetics compared to English (imagine words like “abajo” and “hijo”). Her singing style is stunning, but I can’t enjoy her English songs so much, there’s something that I find weird but I couldn’t put my finger on it until now.

Awesome analysis as usual Sam 😊 Since you talked a lot about unique stylistic choices, I really want to see you analyze Eivør, I think it would be super interesting to hear your take on her unique vocal techniques because I always wonder why and how she makes the sounds she does.

Thank you so much for this video! Shakira sure has her own style of singing. I remember reading years ago that her voice/music teacher called her a goat because she sang like that :D Shakira is one of my favourites, not only because I love her voice but I love the music she has been doing since she was a teen and she is an amazing performer. To be honest, many of my favourite Shakira songs are actually from before she became famous in USA, I mean the Spanish stuff before that. But, even after that in my opinion she has done some solid albums, for example the album this song is from. Again, thank you Sam so much and have a happy weekend :)

She has so many more types of sounds too, she's extremely versatile without not ever sounding not like herself. She breaks the rules because she CAN follow them but can take it further. If you wanna hear her making "normal people sounds" you should listen to some more songs in her catalog. She's way beyond simple singing.

Trueee I love Shakira, and everyone notices that I sounded like her, and also my style, any song I sang, I just can't help but use her style when it's a high note but when its too high, I can't reach it, I tried singing a lot of songs with high not like stone cold, I just can sing the part -iiif happy is her-

Shakira became famous in LaTam because of her unique voice and her great lyrics. She was named the Latin Alanis(Morissete) cause of that.
'Pies descalzos' and '¿Dónde están los ladrones?' were a huge success. For me the best albums. I personally like her better when she sing in Spanish. It's as if the song has more feelings.
    Great reaction ✌️
