You can get the valve out through the firewall, but it requires patience and a specific approach.
After removing the 4mm hex bolts, thread the 10 mm bolt back into the expansion valve about 5-10 turns. Now you can exert leverage on the valve without using pliers, and can wiggle it up and down in addition to side-to-side.
Once it starts to loosen a bit, you may need to use a flat blade screwdriver to pry the valve body toward the center of the vehicle, since the edge of the body bumps against the interior edge of the firewall at this point.
From there, it’s purely a matter of patience and moving more and more as the valve works loose. To remove it, pull the disc toward the opening and push the opposite end of the valve back into the valve compartment. Continue in this direction, still using the 10 mm bold for leverage, until you’re able to get the disc through the oval opening. It’s tight, but it *will* go through.
Going back in with the new valve, just reverse the action that got the old one out. However, be careful about using too much pressure, either on the 10 mm bolt, or against the valve compartment. Again, be patient and take your time.
Once the valve body starts to slide into the compartment, concentrate on feeling the inlet and outlet pipes as they feed into the back of the valve. You’ll feel it get easier when the holes line up, and the whole valve assembly will slide back.
Remove the 10 mm bolt, and then carefully insert one of the 4 mm hex bolts and confirm that you can feel the threads “catch.” (If you can pull the bolt out without the valve assembly moving, the threads haven’t caught.)
Once you’ve got both 4 mm hex head bolts tightened, carefully line up and replace the engine-side pipes. Again, you can feel them slide in if you concentrate as you apply pressure and move the oval pipe plate around.
Replace and tighten the 10 mm bolt, and you’re back where we started.
