Dude, I am so impressed by these videos. It truly feels like those WW2 documentaries on the history channel. I can’t wait to see the next ones, then after this is done, maybe start making the kreig civil war again.
Krieg civil war is next actually :)
Thanks!
By the way, Jan, have you read The Battle of Booby's Bluff? I think you'd enjoy it, it's contemporary literature from the 20s(?), written for a military magazine, which demonstrates tactics before and after WW1. Others may also enjoy it.
No havent read it actually :0
@@Janovich Looking forward to it! Have you thought of covering the Badab War?
This is the kind of series that makes you Ask yourself : "how is this free on the internet ?" Incredible.

Dude shut the hell up or else they might make us pay for it. Do you enjoy kissing ass?
My uncle was a logistics officer, he is also a 40k fan..and THE BIG PUSH to him, isn't a cool story of massed artillery...but a horror story of paper work, supply lines, breaking down trains, munition accidents and exhaustion.
"I imagine dozens of officers killed themselves upon receiving the orders and thousands surely died of exhaustion attempting it"
Not to mention the widespread deafness and pressure-based injuries from over a week of constant (not hyperbole, literally constant), 'round-the-clock artillery.
Yeah, the logistics and overlooked side effects would take the "big push" from painful spectacle into absolute nightmare territory.
I work on military transport planes so I can identify with your dad's pain to some extent. We have embedded supply troops with my unit, heck some of our chain of command are actual logistics troops, both officer and enlisted. I always see that pain in our supply troops' faces when I try to launch a jet and the jet breaks because now that is a HUGE pile of paperwork and phone calls to start figuring out how the hell are they going to get these supplies moving again.
"Are you *SURE* that jet can't fly?"
"Sorry boss, a busted [Insert part name here] means the plane is effectively braindead."
"Understandable"
[Door closes as I hear anguished screaming and crying on the other side]
There's a great moment at the start of The Guns of Tanith where they are issued the wrong magazines for their rifles. It's a side only Dan Abnett shows of conflict
@@NapoleonicWargamingI absoltuely LOVED that part of the books. Now thats some grimdark i can get behind. Not the "Meat grinder" shtick but the " I'm doing my level best but the paperwork keeps screwing me over"
While watching this midway, dad saw this and thought it was a genuine ww1 documentary. You’re just that good at making these series.
Haha lol, thanks!
I like how the Dark Angels don't even bother to say "the traitors are here." to siege command.
The official stance of the imperium is that there are no traitor Astartes. They're all dead or hiding in the Eye. It's why when Alpha first popped up, high command's first action was to ask around if maybe a chapter had joined Vraks thinking they were actually loyalists.
@@LAHFaust I see
@@LAHFaust everyone keeping all this sensitive knowledge about choas surely won't bite them in the ass right? ;)

I literally rewatched the entire series yesterday and thought "I sure hope he uploads a new episode soon." Get out of my head you Emperor-damned psychic
@Ricky Smith It's his life and he can do whatever he wants with it.
The lord commander sure took the concept: “Throw enough crap at the wall, eventually some of it will stick.” To the absolute max.
Or in this case, break it
Sad thing is he still isn't the most extreme IG commander with that approach. Kubrik Chenkov of the Valhallan Ice Warriors really takes the cake there, he ended the Siege of Kotrax by expending 10 million imperial guardsmen in a single battle
The funny thing is...he still hasn't really made any wrong decisions. Everything he did so far was the right move given the information he had.
The Big Push, costly as it was, was still less of a drain on the imperium's resources than a continued stalemate would have been.
All the reasons his plans had failed were outside-context problems, specifically the presence of a certain meddling traitor (?) legion, and none of the people who actually _knew_ about them were interested in talking to him. So he kept doing exactly what he was supposed to do, not knowing (and with no way to know) that the actual situation was completely different from what his reports said.
@@GaldirEonai It's in part why he wasn't severely punished when he got replaced as overall commander. He'd mostly been politicking and negotiating for supplies, reinforcements and such, leaving the formation and implementation of the specifics to the officers on the ground.
I'm not sure there was another palatable option available to him, considering the time-table and the resources available (such as the type of regiments etc). Odds are some Elysian Drop Troops or Jopall Indentured Squadrons would have made all the difference in terms of breaking the stalemates around the 1st and maybe 2nd rings, but they'd also have been much less suited to the general siege-work.
"Hitting them hard isn't working!"
"Have you tried hitting them... harder?"
It's big 🧠 time! ❤
9:00 "the Death Korps of Krieg wavered."
Holy shit. Before this series I only really knew the memes so hearing that sentance was a shock.
While they are extremely indoctrinated, they are still humans, not transhuman warriors or unfeeling robots.

You also wonder how it all was from Cardinal Xaphan's perspective- the once devout Cardinal seeking to wage holy war in the Emperor's name, slowly coming to realise he was falling little by little to chaos.

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED.
Imagine a battlefield so insane even Kriegmen start having second thoughts
its hard to imagine guardsmen staying resolute in battles like vigilus or where casualties number in the billions per side across an entire planet
This kind of battlefield has been a norn during first World War. It's insane that our grand grandfathers had lived through this hell for 4 years. Our ancestors had balls of steel
It makes no sense that the Kriegmen can shutter or flee

I guess even the darkest regiment still have some seblence of self preservation deep down.
No matter how bleak their outlook, Kriegsmen are still human.
Not really, The Deathkore have a very firm concept on the meaning of "sacrifice" and suicidally wasting your life when its obvious the objective won't be met (or worse) is ironically an antithesis to that concept.
It's as if the memes were just over hyping them. There are real world examples of military forces more willing to die than the average kriegsman.
@@QwertyBoredom122 This. Blowing yourself up to stop a Khorne berserker? Worth it. Dying to an artillery shell because your commander told you to move forward just a little too early? F that.
At one point dueing the siege, the Engineering Corps had a 80ish% attrition rate in the initial breakthroughs in the underground bunker complexes.
Thr Kreigsmen were going up against Khornite Berserkers as well.
They were pulled back and complained bitterly.
Because they were making progress.
They are A Okay to die, but it cant be silly.
Thank you for bringing up the 158th's retreat and them killing their commissars. That somehow transformed into the myth of commissars having trouble holding back Kriegers from going on the attack.
(Spoiler so don't read if you don't know about the rest of the battle:) I hope in the reinforcement phase you cover the 158th getting reformed and their penance through battle as they fight alongside space marines.
Yeh I thought that was an important part to cover
You'd think in a universe of chaos daemons, superhuman killing machines, bio-devouring monstrosities and planet ending plagues, a particularly intense assault and artillery bombardment wouldn't be enough to cause the vaunted Death Korps of Krieg to mutiny against their Commissars and retreat.
WW1 Frenchmen faced the same without retreating, and they're not even raised on a war world, trained from adolescence, or born from vitae wombs as nameless killing machines.
Always felt a bit disappointing, like something normal guard do. Kriegers are meant to kill the Commissar when *he* retreats.
@@MiketheMadness speaking of the French... I'm pretty sure the event was based on the French mutinies of late WW1. Where mass amounts of Frenchmen started to refuse to fight.
Kriegers are still human. They still can feel pain and stress like any other. When they're doing apocalyptic scale charges and see everyone around them is being blown to shreds, their organs being scattered around them, and lasbolts constantly ringing past them, it'd probably induce a lot of combat stress or give them shock.
Krieg are also known for retreating when things are futile (even by their standards). Like in the more recent Krieg book, though that retreat was more organized.
@@MiketheMadness Nah. Nothing in the real world can compare to Vraks. The scale is quite literally mind-shattering. Passhendaele claimed what, just half a million men for 6 miles over a couple of months IIRC? That's rookie numbers to Krieg tho. Two regiments or something.
Tbf id more pin it on early FW having mixed writing. They had in one of the later IA books Caliban be intact even tho it got mass scattered. Not only that if you read “Dead men alive”, you’ll see that the Kriegsmen are truly insane, worthy of their reputation. On the totem pole of feats, Imperial Armor generally goes on the lower end. A well deserved reputation.
Edit: Fixed some of the words and grammar.
"Still worth it." - Colonel Attas violating standard doctrine in making sure that the Imperium wins
Now the real war of Vraks begins
It's going to be a hell of a fight from here on out. Though I'm not a fan of chaos getting involved. So far I really liked that it was just some power hungry guy and his faction that saw an opportunity and took it to seize power. All on their own.
I would have been fine with the entire story wrapping up as a clash between the regular humans, no space marines/demons involved.
I agree. Thats the nice thing about Vraks, its a great siege even if you skip the whole chaos incursion thing. There's something for everyone to enjoy.
Chaos is a bit misunderstood. It is a fundamental force of nature in the 40k universe, like gravity or electromagnetism. So really there is no way that this kind of conflict would not attract it. Spill enough blood and cause enough devastation, and daemons will come. It's just the rule. Every sufficiently intense conflict involving psychically sensitive races will either wrap up quickly, or spiral out of control enough to attract Chaos. Large campaigns that don't involve it are very rare.
I hate it when chaos is the "surprise twist" in computer games and animations
Like, it's not a surprise when it's *always* them. Even when it's not them, you're just waiting for the point where its revealed they were manipulating the orks all along or whatever
But this is good 👍
To be fair it's actually pretty "on theme" that a bunch of humans can be engaged in a basic uprising conflict, and then both sides go: "oh f*ck... well... THEY'RE here now!" 😂❤
Ah yes after we had Fort Douaumont, we got the warhammer version of the Somme. You can clearly see where the gw writers got their inspiration from ^^

One of the only times Commissars have to pressure the Korps into fighting instead of reigning them in.
Well that was a hell of a cliffhanager.
The warp fuckery begins!
Feel kinda bad for that Colonel though, his success was met with an immediate hammer that sent him to the warp.
Well it was either die fighting and be honored or be executed for attacking without orders. Since his plan worked and he paid his penance with his life Command would have allowed him to be KIA at the rank of Colonel since that's their shtick.
His plan worked, but he broke procedure and command. That's at best a demotion and at worse a field execution after a court martial. But hey 2nd line defeated.
“But over all ti seemed like the end of the siege was in sight.”

Masterfully done! This is by far my favourite series on youtube and I look forward to each episode notification. I love that you've included the Krieg breaking in this account, as it's an element that often gets overlooked in the various meme based summaries of Krieg, where people will claim they'd sooner kill their own commissar for cowardice than flee. In my mind it makes the Krieg far more human to show they do have a breaking point.
Gotta commend the animation too. The way the unit markings get worn and torn to represent the units being depleted is very intuitive and makes it really easy to visualise the toll being taken on Krieg forces, despite it being abstract. I also love how subtle the daemon skull cloud was. If you weren't paying close attention or listening to the audio you could almost miss it. Very immersive!

Keep making these awesome videos as they really help with understanding the battles more than any other explanation I have seen.

It is beyond me to understand how a handful of fellas isolated in a city, even if well fortified, can withstand infinite millions of kriegmarines and the military might of an entire subsector.
Sooo, y’all ever heard of verdun? Yes, this is it
I believe the technical term of the aftermath of The Big Push is "We made a fucky wukey"
This is what I love about Alpha Legion the most. They can fight without the usual obsessiveness of other traitor legions and employ actual military tactics. But willing to pull out a big reality-warping bag of NOPE on moment's notice. So you not only fighting Space Marines, true and proper with brains in their heads instead of the usual blood/puss/dust/xxx variety but actually contending with daemon "tactical reserves" as well xD
I cant believe the Death Korps troops fled in cowardice
When the carnage is so brutal that the shovel boys decide to retreat and kill their commissars, you know things have gotten bad.
It was fun watching you create this on stream. I'm looking forward to the next one
Vraks o’clock the rest time of the day.
been said before but,, if even the KRIEG are like 'this is nuts' you know its bad.
that was the longest prologue ever . even longer than dragon age inquisition
This just keeps getting better and better. Well done, Jan.
It is quite clear to see how the arrogant pride of space marines and the incompetence of Imperial leadership has caused this battle to be the long blood fest that it is. And this episode is the best one to represent that. And that despite all the memery our community does to portray the factions of 40k as extreme versions of themselfs for comedy, that is not how it would really happen, nor is it good for anyone involved in that universe.
I'm gonna bet that if the 88th siege army, the navy fleet, and the 500 space marines were under the commend of competent military leaders from our time (Like the ones in charge of desert storm) this whole siege would've been over in a few years at most.
That being said, great video series, and I love the in depth coverage of my favorite krieg bois.
PS: what is the music used during the last 2 episodes during the climatic fighting? I would really like to listen to it over and over :)
music composers are in the credits. Probably fesliyan studios.
I mean, honestly, it was the Dark Angels. Those guys just pursue their own agenda of hunting the Fallen most of the time, rather than being helpful and cooperative allies.
I don't think the strategic minds from our generation are somehow paragons of logic that would win this war in a few years. This war has been purely WW1 tactics with WW2 blitz kriegs tactics to exploit break throughs. Not unlike the current artillery war in Ukraine, devoid of smart ammunition though. Air forces are completely suppressed, orbital bombardments are out of the question so it just drags on. Outside of requisitioning space marines to perform lightning strikes which cannot be done because they're a scarce resource not to be used on wars that aren't considered _serious_ enough you cannot hope to see the war won quickly.
@@Marth667 And just like in Ukraine, eventually weak spots are found and the entire defense just folds in on itself like wet tissue paper until another natural obstacle is reached and another line is prepared.
I honestly cannot wait for part 9 😁
I see Lord Commander Zuehlke is making another gargantuan effort to move his drinks cabinet six inches closer to the Basilica again...

Crazy how they see time and time again that giving your lower commanders initiative let's them do informed decisions with what they know about the front and they simply ignore it 😭
It's almost like high command aren't qualified to command anything more tactical than a game of hopscotch
Much better than anything warhammer+ has made. I have to say that I have enjoyed this telling of the story as much as arch's .👍😎🐺
I have to say; although I am not a huge fan of 40k, I found these videos to be very enjoyable and the animations a pleasure to watch. Bravo
Good job, it was quite interesting. Still makes me grit my teeth when I think of the lack of defence in depth after all that fortification... only one breakthrough being enough to totally overrun the entire defensive line, as if they have no armour or fortified communication trenches with ATWs of their own to pinch the enemy's wedge.
Just so you know, those defensive lines are roughly 7km deep of the most insane bunkers and trenches youll ever see. On such a large map it may look like nothing but think about how that would be irl.
Then again a breakthrough like that WOULD have been stopped easily if they hadnt been fighting along the entire front for weeks already. At some point there are no effectove counter attacks left. They've already fought off the worst the entire 88th siege army could do to them, this just happened to be the breakthrough they couldnt stem
@@Janovich Yeah, but on that scale of effort, you would have a few 7km deep communication trenches dividing the perimeter into pockets. Just one would be enough to literally halve the enemy's gains from a breakthrough, since hitting that trench would be just as hard as hitting a perimeter trench.
And then, with that support, your perimeter trenches could put up a lot of resistance against being rolled up, reducing enemy gains further (trenches aren't defenceless along their length, especially if kms thick and stacked with bunkers).
I'd also expects both sides' armoured corps to be fresh, since those don't seem to be used in this style of siege warfare (whether or not that adds up), so the enemy should be able to mount effective resistance. Though still very true that most of the defending forces would be exhausted, and so wouldn't hold up well against advancing armour--morale would falter and many would flee, the Imperium would make gains.
Still, I'd figure they'd take more of a quadrant, those Habzones acting like major fortresses as part of the communication trenches.
@@vanivanov9571 most of the defenders are just workers with guns they don't have the highest moral ever
@@isimiel3405 At this point, most of the workers are 9 year veterans, whose morale was already above Imperial expectation at the start of the siege. So the skill gap between them and the Krieg ought to have narrowed due to that half-generation of experience.
By this point, all the 9 year olds would be adult soldiers who grew up into this siege, probably veterans of a couple of years themselves.
Either way, their morale is good enough to hold defences, or else it would've been a walkover to start with.
Vraks was initially designed by the Imperium to repel opportunistic invaders as it is deep in Imperial territory. So few would be foolish enough to attack it in the first place, and those who did would likely be stopped by three defensive lines. And 8 years under constant bombardment isn't enough to add much more to the existing heavy fortifications.
Splicing an animation in when doing the zoomed in "focused scenarios" (like Col Attas's assault) might be a cool idea! Love your work.
