      @@Gemnist98 I feel like I sort of understand where you're coming from, when we get a lot of information in scenes lasting only a few seconds to establish something (ie Ben getting his helmet repaired being visually shown to the audience)
      But for me, show don't tell is important for character development. Characters shouldn't be explaining how they feel to the audience, we should be interpreting it through their actions, but this movie has no time for that. One of the worst cases of this that sticks out in my mind is when Rey out loud explains why she needs to confront palpatine. This is key information about character motivation that shouldn't just be blatantly spelled out to the audience. I feel like it was done in tfa because there was a lot to establish between rotj and tfa. That doesn't necessarily make it right, but I understand why they did it.

    Honestly, my biggest issue with the Sequel Trilogy was the waste of some really great actors/characters. Take Finn for example, he had a really interesting back story, a good actor in the role, and so many cool possible pathways... could he be force sensitive? Could he be a spy? Is he really good or just scared? All these things were wasted and he was turned into a source for slapstick comedy and cheesy one liners. Kind of defines the whole trilogy for me, alot of wasted golden opportunities... heartbreaking.

    • @WhelmedButReady
      @WhelmedButReady Před 4 lety +18

      I think Finn is a prime example of the disconnect between Abrams and Johnson. Clearly JJ had things set up for him. And Rian literally had him wasted in the second movie. Meanwhile, I think Abrams always had Finn becoming Force sensitive. Finn's arc in ROS feels like the halfway point of his story, not the end. I blame Johnson

    • @Hadarouken
      @Hadarouken Před 4 lety +8

      I so wish they explored the mentality of being an ex stormtrooper and what that would do to a person and how he'd learn to live beyond that. I thought we might finally get something like that with Janna, but instead we were told that she and the others were all former troopers and then it was never addressed again

    • @RaikenXion
      @RaikenXion Před 4 lety +3

      I agree, Maz was wasted how did she find Luke's father's lightsaber? A story that will never be told. Captain Phasma wasted, Hux wasted really, the Knights of Ren! Such cool and mysterious characters completely wasted. R2 D2 hardly did anything either, and D-0 what did he really do? I cant remember. The "Sith Storm Troopers" were just RED thats it, they did jack shit we hardly saw them. All those Star Destroyers with mini death star weapons attached to them and only one fired at a planet.
      The whole movie is one big waste, this "Disney Trilogy" a wasted opportunity.

    I just saw Rise of Skywalker for myself. And while I enjoyed it more than Last Jedi I think it's ultimately worse than that film despite being significantly more entertaining. It's chocked full of really dumb and easy cop-outs that destroy any sense of steaks or tension. And it also completely undermines the one thing I liked most about Last Jedi which was that Rey's lineage wasn't tied to any major character and it ultimately didn't matter where she came from. It's a straight-forward MacGuffin plot and nostalgia trip that weirdly feels inspired by Avengers: Endgame.
    And although I'm nowhere near as invested in the characters of this trilogy as I was with the Avengers team this cast does a lot to keep me engaged. This movie feels like an apology for Last Jedi but it also feels like fan fiction that JJ wrote when he was 12. It's like JJ was trying to make the sequel to Force Awakens he would've made and a conclusion to the saga all in one movie. This is a mediocre movie for sure but it's certainly watchable. It's a fun time but ultimately a disappointing conclusion to the saga.

    One of the critiques I heard for this was "Star Wars was never a franchise where you had to turn your brain off to enjoy it." I don't agree with this because there were alot of things in the original trilogy where you had to turn your brain off to enjoy (the Ewoks and rescue of Han in ROTJ and the incompetence of Stormtroopers). Also you should be allowed to not think about things to enjoy anything and I think that it has become lost in some parts of the Star Wars fanbase today.

What’s frustrating is that they had one shot at this, we won’t ever see the cast of the originals together again and they failed to take full advantage of that opportunity while they had the chance. The whole sequel trilogy is just a whole lotta nothing. A series of wasted opportunities. Whatever you think of the Last Jedi, it completely derailed the story of this trilogy. Good commentary, I agree with most. The Ben ending was the most disappointing of all. Kylo Ren/Ben was such a good character, and he just gets offed and never mentioned again... Honestly I saw this whole movie as a spit in the face to TLJ in general, and I don't even know who at Disney is responsible (probably too many to name) but 100% yes, everything Disney makes is just a cash grab.
    Surprised though that you didn't mention the force healing, and how that inclusion basically ruins everything that came before. This is beyond JK Rowling levels of "but I just invented this magic that I want to use and screw that it would have been useful before/after" , this is seriously like world shattering ramifications. Since apparently anyone can learn it (Rey learned without being taught, Ben knows how at the end for some reason) then we could assume that Anakin could use it? So, what exactly was it that the dark side was offering him to turn evil? Oh right, that whole saving Padme thing.
    Anakin heals his mom= no Darth Vader. Anakin resurrects Padme = no Darth Vader.
    But yeah, sure, let's just let Rey heal everyone because she's awesomesauce like that. And then Ben can know how too so we can kill him off at the end. Yup. Perfection.

But I really think they should have brought Anakin back... He talks to Rey at the end so he's still "force-active" it makes no sense he wouldn't have warned Kylo or helped at the end. We see that Yoda used lighting in TLJ and Luke caught the lightsaber so they can obviously touch physical stuff so there's no reason Anakin couldn't have played a bigger role. He should have been the Skywalker to rise but Rey just takes the last name (WHICH IS STUPID) she should embrace her last name or come up with something new idk but I didn't like the name thing.

    I think one of the biggest problems with the plot was how the entire time palpatine is hell bent on turning Rey to the dark side so she can strike him down or whatever and he can flow through her and blah blah blah then outta no where he’s like oh wait ! You and kylo are a dyad thingy? Oh well it’s a lot more convenient for me to just suck you guys energy and restore myself to keep going instead .... like shouldn’t that have been the plan from the start ? How would he not notice they are the dyad ? Or even if he did why would he choose his initial plan for her to replace him when he could just use her and kylo to keep living ?? None of it makes sense .... and he if can just die multiple times like he mentions “I have died before” then what’s to prevent him from coming back again ? Totally undermines all the entire arc anakin had and his purpose of being the chosen one ... and yes that ending was clearly a reshoot. That scene has zero dialogue... just an awkward forced kiss to make reylo fans Stan this movie because now it’s “cannon” they have a boner for one another. Not saying it’s the worst movie ever , but god was it a major let down. Kylo shoulda got more justice in the end as well. He deserved better. And THANK YOU FOR SAYING that bout Finn and his confession of love. Like it was SO clear that it was meant to be that and they just throw that whole plot away and replace it with the reylo ending.

    'The Rise of Skywalker' actually strips the merits I once viewed on 'The Last Jedi' and 'The Force Awakens'.
    Sure, Rian Johnson pretty much boxed Star Wars into a corner and his execution may be far from perfect but he brought some interesting ideas into it too.
    Rey being a nobody was something fans protested, arguing as their proof that she's a Mary Sue, but isn't that the point? That the Force is no longer exclusive to some lineage? I mean, it did end on some Kid Nobody picking up his broom using the Force.
    My opinion is that they should've brought someone new to write Star Wars out of that corner instead of undoing the previous film, which is what J.J. Abrams did. Bringing Palpatine back and making Rey his granddaughter is Fan-Fiction 101.
    This film, at core, is hollow. I don't see much to discuss about it and I no longer see much reasons to discuss the previous films either.

    In 8 Revan could get wrecked by Luke and Luke could chop his arm and legs off, but before leaving him to die he redeems him, seeing that he might end up creating the next Darth Vader
    Then Anakin could return in 9 when they fail to prevent Nihilus' return to help stop him
    When Luke is about to be killed suddenly a portal opens, and people walk through. When they open their lightsabers you see its Anakin, Obi Wan, Yoda, Qui Gon and Mace Windu.

    This is basically Harry Potter Part 1 and 2. If you smushed them together. There's so many scenes and shots that come straight from those movies, or visual cues and I'm like. Yeah they should've just done another movie. Don't think anyone would've gotten mad about that tbh. Also this movie made me appreciate Last Jedi a lot more lol

    At first I agreed that making her Palpatine’s granddaughter lessens the impact of her coming from nobody, causing her to forge her own destiny. Then after thinking about it, I realized that the Palpatine twist entails that Palpatine is her grandfather and that her parents were good people trying to protect her. This means that her destiny wasn’t necessarily to become evil, but it was to choose to be like her evil grandad Palpatine or to be like her good and sacrificial parents. Nothing was set in stone for her so she still had to choose who she wanted to be, which I still liked.

    Rey being Palpatin’s daughter is almost the same as Luke being Vader’s son. But worse. Dunno what’s interesting there at this point.

    For me I didn't grow up with starwars I heard about it but I never watched it before, so when I started watching it I wanted to watch everything in order so I watched the first 2 episodes of the prequels which got me interested then I watched all 6 seasons of the clone wars animation and in proper order then I watched the 3rd episode and I have to say watching the prequels in that order made me fall in love with them and with the starwars story in general I got so invested in the story and lore and so seeing the end of the Jedi order in Anakin turn to the dark side made me feel really sad and that last seen with obi wan while everyone was laughing at the memes I was crying waterfalls out of my eyes it was so heartwrenching sad seeing these two brothers in that scene and the amazing relationship they had between them which was fully explored in the clone wars, I watched the og trilogy afterwards and Loved them and I really wish we had a 6 season animated like the clone wars after ep 6 wich would fully explore what happens after and make us connect even more with characters then cam ep 7 which I liked fine enough not great but fine it setup really interesting ideas and themes which I was looking forward to , then the unthinkable happened Ryan Johnson came with his "subverting expectations " ideas and completely and absolutely destroyed everything we loved about star wars he did so many things wrong that not only did he ruin what 7 started he completely destroyed the enture sequel trilogy he didn't care about star wars he didn't care about the fans he didn't care about telling a good story what he cared about is subverting expectations he is the living embodiment of "subverting expectations" I hate him so much for what he did, that's why the sequel trilogy failed and that's why it feels so sad for me to see this great story so utterly destroyed just breaks my heart what Ryan did is just unforgivable.

    Not a bromance, just two guys consoling each other for being to chained behind an incompetent Mary Sue. She is the protagonist, but for some reason that means no one is allowed to outshine her for a moment.

    Way to review Rise of Skywalker-
    As a Movie in its own right.
    As a Star Wars movie.
    As a conclusion to the Sequel Trilogy.
    As a conclusion to the Main Star Wars 9 Movie Long Saga.

    I felt bad for Abrams. You could see he was really trying to make the best of the situation since Rian Johnson wrote the story into a corner with TLJ.

      @@jeremybrown9611 The blame shouldn't be on Rian though. He made the best film of the saga since the original trilogy and he freed the story from being too similar to plotpoints from the originals which is what so many complained about in TFA.
      I think more attention should be directed towards Terrio and Abrams for refusing the mold and new example to take form and insisting we just needed to set things back one movie and make a "bigger and better" RotJ. RotJ wasn't planned from the get go before ESB was released, and yet the crew of VI were still able to make a lovely film respecting the twist of Vader and Luke and concluding the trilogy in a decent manner. Even without a plan.

    For the most part, I've had a clear idea of how I felt about Star Wars movies. And this is the first one that really mindfucked me. Ik a lot of people that hate this movie with a passion. I also know a lot of people who fucking love it. I think hands down that this is the best threequel in the saga. Especially coming from someone who REALLY doesn't like Return Of The Jedi that much. At the end of the day, I went into this expecting to hate it (which is new for me). And this is helping me piece some things together for me. You have a knack for doing that to me lmao. At the end of the day, it still kills me that this movie wanted to kill the last movie so bad despite it's pros. And the JJ bullshit is galore still. But the performances (*cough* Leia *cough*) and the better aspects of the fan service saved it for me

    This video is the only thing I need for Christmas. In all seriousness though I really enjoyed this film but it’s one of them movies where you agree with the people who say it’s bad and you agree with the people who say it’s good
