  • South Park Rally is a kart-style racing video game based on the American animated comedy series South Park. The game is developed by Tantalus Interactive and was the last to be published by Acclaim Entertainment (near the end of the third season of the show) for the PlayStation in 1999, which was later ported to Microsoft Windows in 1999 for North America and in 2000 for Europe and for Nintendo 64 and Dreamcast in 2000. The game includes many characters, vehicles, locations, items and other features inspired by or featured on the series.

    South Park Rally review on the nintendo 64. Recorded using an Ultra HDMI modded N64 console with an Elgato game capture HD capture card using a real game cartridge.
    Does this retro nostalgic game fall into your top 5 or top 10 N64 games? What is your favourite full episode of south park or did you love south park the movie?

    I must say that I loved this game so much. It’s not perfect, but it was very original and me and my friends spend so much time trying to finish the game and collect all the characters.

      From what I recall, the N64 version lacked 3 unlockable characters, had some voice lines removed, but had better visuals compared to the PS1 version and had 4 player support when the PS1 only had 2.

    Great review as always! It's funny you mention the whole profit thing near the end, considering this apparently wasn't very profitable for Tantalus, and in fact after its release they weren't in a great financial state. There's an article on Gamasutra done for their 20th anniversary and it explains a bit more what happened, though in short it was basically Acclaim being Acclaim.

    SPR is a surprisingly challenging game, which gave the single player so much replay value. Its completely different then any other racer on the console and that's what I liked about it. I think Glenn just wasn't good at it, hence the negative review.

    Still rather surprised that many people bash on this game, cause I enjoyed playing it. While I can agree its not perfect, I ended up playing this more over than Mario Kart at the time (mainly due to the multiple gameplay modes as well as locations that were done with each game mode in mind).
    One thing I find annoying is seeing many reviewers not using the handbrake when going into a sharp corner as it actually making turning alot tighter. Sure nothing says anything about using it to drift, but I at least experimented with the controls and found out I could do that.

    I played a lot of both Rally and the FPS, by no means they're good, but I enjoyed the hell outta them.
    I would have liked Rally more if there was some sort of powerslide, because the handling is not good and a time trial mode would have been cool considering the non-linear design of the tracks making some interesting shortcuts, also later challenges became really annoying and unfun. The soundtrack was the best part honestly.

    Of the three 'South Park' games... it's been so long since I've played any of them, but I'll go with 'Chef's Luv Shack', a lackluster trivia/party game, as the weakest. 'Luv Shack' had mini-games such as "Spank the Monkey" and "Ass-teroids", and they were OK (at best), but the trivia component was a 'You Don't Know Jack' mimic that was so watered down, I could swaer it was simply water. With 'YDKJ', once an answer to a question is revealed, there's a zippy and often hilarious punchline afterward; the humor in 'Chef's Luv Shack' was all setup, but no payoff.

  • @ZX-cq1vx
    @ZX-cq1vx Před 5 lety +3

    I enjoy playing South Park Rally (usually alone) and I have fond memories trying to unlock everything in the game. I never got everything (Marvin being an example of a character I just didn't know how to unlock) but I still had a blast playing it as a kid (yes I played rated M games as a kid). As for the worst one, I think that goes to the first-person shooter South Park game. I liked playing it but the controls are so damn awkward and strange that I have problems trying to survive. As for Chef's Love Shack, I never played it so I can't give my own opinion on that game.

    • @n64glennplant
      @n64glennplant  Před 5 lety +3

      Luv shack is weak in terms of content but it’s fun in multiplayer for sp fans. I agree that the FPS was weak, Matt and trey hated it and even acclaim admitted it was rushed to meet the sales deadline to cash in which is why I always find it hard to understand anyone trying to defend that game in particular 👍

    Rally is still a guilty pleasure of mine and I appreciate that it tried something different I was and still am impressed by the roster championship mode was OK but as soon as you got to the championship races like the egg hunt that is where the game becomes frustrating annoying and luck based.
    I do remember it well reaching the Halloween race waiting by the drop box for unspected racers and I stole all there candy and won lol
    Fun fact the ps1 version of the game you can put into your CD player and it will play the soundtrack and half of the towns mayor's dialogue.

    Rally is the worst, Chef's Luv Shack is actually pretty fun. I have it in my top 25 N64 games list. It's like a combined parody of Jeopardy and Mario Party. Don't take it too seriously and you and friends will definitely have a good time for a few sessions (the game runs out of unique questions pretty quickly).

      I’d be up for that if they made it a more straight kart racer - with a track designer so everyone can make their own cool courses based in the South Park universe

    Blimey I loved...and STILL love...this bleeping game. Was so challenging, so annoying and yet somehow so much fun. Long late night multiplayer sessions, it was preferred to Mario in our flat. We must be alone in that love :)

    This was one of the worst games ive played on the system. Idk why someone would even bother trying to complete it. Multiplayer sucked too. It just makes you wish you were playing mario kart instead

    Honestly people give South Park FPS too much flack, it was good for what it was in the day. Off course it was just one of the 3 N64 games I had with the other 2 being WWF Attitude and Mystical Ninja

    So much wasted potential here. Between Mario Kart 64, Diddy Kong Racing, Snowboard Kids, S.C.A.R.S., and Mickey's Speedway USA, the mediocre South Park Rally was rightfully overshadowed.

    I can never forget that I actually used to love this game when it first came out, and I actually owned it on the PlayStation at the time, since well, I was a PlayStation gamer. And given of how Attack on Titan-levels of HUGE South Park really was at the time, given of how even curious I was about it, it seemed heavily essential to me to have this game, but to also have the other South Park FPS game, which I never got until a couple of years later. It was very obvious from the get go that my childhood was totally wasted on this one. But, is it as bad as Retro Force, a PS1 shmup that has poorly defined my childhood in so many horrible ways? Of course not.

      It surely was a thing that, you hear about a show that became so Attack On Titan-levels of HUGE, and you were nothing but curious about it all long, that you not only have to watch the show, but also have to play the games as well. And yes I was caught up in the South Park hype at the time, especially when South Park first came to Germany only 2 years after its original US debut in 1999, which was how I got to play this game in the first place. I did know about the FPS game at the time, except I played it much much later. And yeah, I know what you're thinking.
