As we always say these are our opinions, not law. We have our own particular tastes in music and that is what directs our overall opinion.

One thing Primus can do is play, every member has thier own technicality. Ler is a very underrated guitarist imo
Created one of the top 25 thrash albums of all time while in high school. He's rated.
Truth. Only 1 guitar ON EARTH sounds like that.
Larry la Londe is criminally underrated.
Agreed, one of the greatest in my opinion
All masters of their craft.
Abstract is a perfect word to describe Primus, they have such an unorthodox, experimental style that fuses funk and rock with outlandish, comedic stories of over the top characters.
Abstractly unorthodox
Exactly
I met les claypool when i worked at a golf course. He was leaving the hitting range because it started to drizzle. I happened to have my bass with me because i was heading out of town to a friend's cabin. He waited in the parking lot for me to grab my bass. He autographed it and jammed on it a bit.
That laughter you did in the end is the whole point. Just some guys jamming, and having fun, and being silly. Sometimes it's nice to listen to stuff that doesn't take it self so seriously. Just puts a smile on you.
Les Claypool often stated that he didn't enjoy (or was uncomfortable) with writing and singing songs that were of a personal style, instead he opted to write songs that revolved around imaginary characters. I think he also said that it allowed him to not fear singing and also that a generic musical voice, which he didn't feel he had, was not important in order to create the songs he wanted to. It helped express the talent and skills possessed.
Also, Primus have always shared the duties within the band, each instrument gets their time to showcase yet still are required to compliment the other members in order to have the cohesive songs being played.
Well said!
Agreed, very well said.
Primus suck! Give a few more of their tunes a go, Les is one of the most remarkable musicians out there, and just a good dude.
Primus is a band that never took themselves too seriously. If you try listening to them again is should be "Wynona's Big Brown Beaver"
Les Claypool once tried out to play Bass for Metallica and was told "No, you're too good"
lol right..went to highschool with Kirk Hammett too
'She came slidin' down the alleyway like butter off a hot biscuit.'
Do I listen to Primus? Yes.
Do I like Primus? No.
Do I keep listening to Primus? Yes.
Why? No idea. Fucking wierd band.
for a good crowd reaction, check tommy the cat out in a live video
tom waits played tommy in the album version, which is what you’re hearing
the band is definitely an acquired taste. but i promise they were radio popular at one point in the 90s :).
Tom Waits also supposedly did his entire bit in one take.
I was gonna suggest the same thing. Gotta watch Les in action! Plus the crowd participation is awesome!!
Your analogy of a music lesson and the teacher left the room...y'know what, I think that pretty much sums up Primus, they are great musicians but its very much tongue in cheek
I've been jamming to Primus for ages. Les is awesome on bass
My man has the same reaction can’t help but dance around while hearing that bass slap
Both of your reactions are so accurate for me lmao - I was groovin but also looking at Les Claypool sideways real hard with this one LMAO
And Wynona's Big Brown Beaver has one of the best vids of all time.
Shake Hands With Beef has a disgusting groove.
I don't know why so few people recommend Frizzle Fry. Probably my favorite Primus song.
Definitely underrated and one of my favorites as well
This guy in the green hat would be the worst person to go to a show with, my man with the dreads…I’ll party with all night
Primus and Les Claypool (in his other bands) never disappoint at their live shows. He is a great performer and a master on instruments. It seems he is always on tour and I suggest you see him asap. Primus sucks!
I saw Primus and Rush in April '94.
Also, I just BARELY missed getting one of Neil Pert's drumsticks after Rush played YYZ, and Pert thew his sticks into the crowd; one landed in our row, went under my seat so, as I dove down to grab it, feeling around in the dark, I ended up knocking it to the row behind me, where it rolled straight to a guy 10+ years older than me (I was 16 or 17) and about 40lbs. of muscle on me, though if the sizes/ages were reversed, at the end of the day, he still got the drumstick fair and square... It's not like he grabbed it from me... my dumb ass accidentally rolled it right to him! I was dang close, though. It would've been a good souvenir!
The difference in your guys reaction during the song had me 💀 😂 one with their head down and hand on your head like “wtf is this???” while the other is jamming and getting the humor plus musicality of it all lol Primus was one of the best shows live. Just vibe and jam and lose your mind lol
Primus is the Ren and Stimpy of music…open your mind and you’ll find a good time my man
To understand Primus...start with 'Winnona's Beaver'. It's sarcastic punk funky. You either get it, or you hate it.
I love how they brought on Tom Waits and he agreed to these goofy vocals.
starring tom waits as tommy the cat...
There should be a whole channel dedicated to the primus library where one is a hard primus fan and the other has never heard of primus.
P.S.- Other great Primus songs are:
My Name is Mud
Jerry was a Race Car Driver
Mr. Krinkle
Wynonna's Big Brown Beaver
DMV
I would add frizzle fry and Mr knowitall....🤷♂️
Best bassist ever
you have to be a certain type of person to like primus on intial listen
This is only made better by one guy getting it. And the other guy new think g what the fuck. Snap back to the guy getting it smiling like ‘you about to get it’
It's the dichotomy of primus. One part of you says "wtf?" The other part says "this fucking slaps"
for the longest time, back when iTunes was huge, Primus was considered its own genre in the app drop down menu
My man straight up jamming with the song makes the video.
the context is that this song is writen about tom waits, and american blues musician whos multitude of beautiful songs is a rabbit hole in itself, im not sure how the song relates to him personally but primus and les claypool have an obsession with him, listen to georgia lee by tom waits, its a poignant song about a young (12 yo) black girl who was found dead in an orchard, he didnt want her name to dissolve into a miriad of news clippings so he wrote a song to commemorate it, tommy the cat is tom waits nickname and hes a legend to american culture which is why primus made a song about him
Primus lyrics, visuals, and Les' vocals are weird af. However, if you miss the musicality of what they do..I don't know what to say. Without a doubt one of the greatest jamming bands that ever existed, but that's not all. Great reaction.
Fun fact: Tommy the Cat's part is actually voiced by Tom Waits!
Man that bass does go hard
This is like top notch musicians backing Weird Al's wit. Claypool is a force of bass. Check out the Claypool Lennon Delirium. Yes, that Lennon. Julian.
HOW DID I MISS THIS ONE!!!!!?!?! I was gonna recommend some primus, but I neglected to 😭😭😭, this one really just like exhibits the bassist/singers abilities
I feel like "my name is mud", "lacquer head", "Jerry was a race car driver" anddddddd hmmmmmmm "too many puppies" are ones ya should look into!! Primus is quite a groovy jam band though!!
I think Primus is a side of JB that he's never had a chance to explore, the kind of Music he grew up rarely experiment with the absurd , or Looney, playful as the main course
primus are unreal lads, check out mr krinkle, jilly's on smack(live version)fish on,john the fisherman, winona's big brown beaver etc
We'll definitely do another Primus at some point
@@marylandstationmusic9422 well in lads for sheer musicianship and comedic value i'd start with winona's big brown beaver
@@marylandstationmusic9422 Frizzle fry, too many puppies, and defy the laws of tradition are good too.
If there actually was a god, & he played bass, & he recruited other music gods to jam with him. Primus!!!!!!
Lol students jamming after the teacher left the room such a perfect description
If you want him to understand Primus, go to Mr. Krinkle. It shows that Claypool is a BASSist, not just a bass guitarist.
Claypool can play any bass string, man. Straight up.
Geddy Lee from RUSH does awesome bass solo's! Not only does RUSH have great bass solo's but drums and guitar also. You guys should really check out RUSH, 3 of the most brilliant musicians imo and in the opinions of many top musicians. Love to see you listen to more Primus as well
The guy who doesn't get it, not one bit, needs to step outside the little box he's living in.
I don't understand why Tom Waits isn't credited.
It's just so fun and syncopated I can't help but love it, and you don't have to have ever picked up an instrument to appreciate a song no matter how complicated and weird. Most all of us love music as children before we recognize it as a concept at all.
Leather guy knows his onions
One of the best live shows ever! Saw them at the Vic theater in Chicago during this tour.
I jam just like him ))) great funk here just go fun
Dude primus is WEIRD. First time I heard them I thought it was terrible. Then you hear it again and then again and before you know it your head banging to a goofy bass rift and it’s so fun hahah
If you hate bass solo's then Primus is not your band lol, bass is the lead with Les Claypool.
Primus is what you get when you get a handful of incredibly talented musicians , all firing on all cylinders..
💚C L A Y P O O L💚
Primus hype! Thanks for checking them out :)
More Primus please, can I suggest “Those Damn Blue Collar Tweakers” live. Thanks and keep up the great reactions and breakdowns.
Primus is a ridiculous version of RUSH
Rush on ketamine?
Anyone who thinks this is what a music class would sound like when the teacher leaves the room is a musical dolt. He completely undermined his own musical credibility not recognizing this as musical and artistic genius.
Bass solo… Cliff Burton from “for who the bell tolls” live! (Cliff em all). 4:51 of bass fuckery!
Thankfully, a few have mentioned this :
Bass Solo ear candy -
Cliff Burton Metallica -LIVE Anesthesia - bass solo
unfortunately RIP Cliff 😔
Also, it's good to see you expand your comfort level to react to Primus, a band that is its own genre - mostly intentional, the singing and lyrics are secondary, they are all about the music & their mastery of funk rock hip roll jazz hop alt
Seeing them on tour, as the opening act for Rush (legends)
It was two of the best 3 man bands you will ever witness in one night & lots of bass mastery..... As well as the premier drummer of all time
RIP Neil Peart 😔
Be sure to try some more from Primus, as well as that bass solo from Cliff Burton, and Rush is about as iconic as rock music goes.
*Primus Sucks !!*
Not sure why everyone always reacts to Tommy the cat first. The lyric performance always throw people off. I’d recommend checking out “My Name is Mud” live at Woodstock. That whole performance was incredible. And you’ll hear plenty of nice bass solos from Les Claypool.
Yeah it’s strange, I would start with Jerry Was A Race Car Driver or the one you mentioned, Tommy The Cat is a masterpiece and a fan favorite (my fav Primus song and one of my most listened songs ever), but most people listening to Primus for the first time will not like it
Need to watch the live video
Dude in leather jackets got it right. Stop by here in Mid America, we’ll hang out see some shows. I’ve seen Primus twice.
Primus makes me move, so cool love them ❤❤❤
The context of Tommy the Cat is Tommy the Cat.
“Tommy was a race car driver”
For this guy to be a Musician & not feel the funk of Tommy is astounding to me. Sad😢
You have to check out Prius live! They are amazing live
Les Claypool is not the greatest bassist ever, but he is probably the most beloved. The guy is a creative genius.
I say extreme expression of music without rules. Every single members are virtouso.
Claypool slaps that bass like it owes him money!!
You guys reaction is what Primus is all about
Yo. Shake hands with beef by primus
Saw these guys open for tool. I wish I was high but I wasn't. Their songs made me wait in a 30 min line to take a leak. Good band tho. If I wanted to see a circus I'd go to one.
Please react to lacquer head for the bass goodness
Y'all should hear the story about Les Claypool (bassist/lead vocals) and when he tried out for Metallica! lmao
Real talk tho this is the first time I've seen yaws video but I respect dude in the brown Hoodie I respect his opinion but I promise he'll be a fan in the next few years lol
They color outside the lines
Primus was original 30 years, exactly the same today. No one like them then, none since.
Check out Beats Antique "Beelzebub". Les Claypool is also in this song and is as crazy as in "Tommy the cat".
The best bassist of all time !!! By far . Stop with that slap bassist Segway. It’s ridiculous
Good to see you actually smile while listening to something a bit “different”. Music should be enjoyed on some level
I grew up listening to this band in the early 90s . So what it is is that when they first started nobody liked them everyone said they sucked but as the years went on they eventually became fans so that's why when you see someone saying primus sucks it's because they're fans. Primus suck
The funny thing is that Primus perfected the song for years before putting it on an album. You can hear the demo version from 1988 and see how much different/slower it was, they also got Tom Waits to do the voice for Tommy the Cat
Primus sucks 😎
Ok I know I aint the first to bring this up but I listened to what you said you hate bass solos. I would challenge you sir with Anesthesia- Pulling teeth recorded of course by the late great Cliff Burton. If it doesn't meet your needs for originality and musicality, you dont like the bass guitar. If you like it, check out the bassline only for Metallica's Orion, also by Cliff.
Polyphia song name is G.O.A.T you will forget any other song you have ever reacted to and your welcome.
System of a Down had to be inspired by this.
I feel that :D me playing a song to someone. vibing hard they be just facepalming.
By the way
the Bass player is also the singer
Primus Sucks
Give me the context???????? What the hell is wrong with this guy? If this funky, crazy treat doesn't make you smile and rock out, then there is no hope for you! :D :D :D And bass solos KICK ASS ! ! ! \m/
Bootsy Collins, modern whiteboy style, Funk Metal😁
I love this, primus have chops 😁
The thing is, Primus DOES kinda work like the world's best jam band.
Les Claypool's bass playing is undeniably at the heart of Primus' sound, so everyone else has to kind of come in around him and find a space where they can work and between Tim 'Herb' Alexander on drums and Larry LaLonde on guitar, they just mark out that territory and go nuts within it. It's like everyone's doing their own thing, but with enough awareness of what the others are doing that they can complement each other perfectly without stepping on each others' toes.
Technically they are excellent but they're not an easy listen.
Try a band call firehose. Similar style but much more accessible
Captain… There are doubts…
Fuck yeah brotha!!! Primus is the shit!
I love Brits. The guy in leather jacket looks like Pernell Whitaker. He should be in Top Boy. Primus Sucks as they should
After listening to this listen to Willie the Pimp by Frank Zappa. This song is basically the Primus version of that.
That's really an interesting debate. I'm a musician and I produce a little bit, and I also feel like you do about the "earth-dwellers" at least I think I'm feeling your meaning. I grapple with whether or not that's true though. I THINK I have the context you're looking for about Primus. This isn't music to just throw on a playlist all casual like. They make what I would call, pieces for when you need a break from hearing the same shit all the time. Also if you play strings you jam out to these songs in much the way you described in your analogy. Teacher's gone, lets go hard!
I would agree with that Siegmeyer, you tend to slap on Promos as a break from the norm. Charles
I’ve had friends who loved this song and band, but they’ve never made any sense to me. Also, the jokey singing really just isn’t my cup of tea. Musically I think they’re fine as a jam band sound. But the vocals always throw it off for me.
Okay but did he tell you the bassist is also the singer hahaha
