- On April 13, 2019, Patti Smith + Stewart Copeland (on percussion) joined Choir! Choir! Choir! at Onassis Festival 2019: Democracy Is Coming, co-presented by The Public Theatre and Onassis USA. Together, we sang Patti Smith's anthem "People Have The Power" with a sold-out crowd and Stewart Copeland played percussion, specially a Brazilian samba frying pan!
What happened was pure magic and we're still pinching ourselves. A special thanks to everyone who helped to make this moment happen. Enjoy! #UseYourVoice

I don't know how Patti can be so tough and punk rock, so otherworldly and graceful and so cute and full of warmth at the same time. She is a force of nature.
And this is such a beautiful rendition of such an important Song Of hope.
Mina Ermelyn she’s a beautiful person.
Exactly to all of this.
@@CHOIRx3 and so are you two, too. WOKE all the way. Makes complete sense this happened.
:)
Her hands define Patti. They are her tools and are so Graceful even when in a fist of passion or laying out an imaginary landscape or writing: even sipping coffee. Tiny noticeable hands.
My idea of a real rock star. She's talented but full of integrity and humility as well.
Seriously! So beautifully humble. ♡
@Barbara Elovic Absolutely. Well said. She’s such a lovely humble lady.
Beautiful woman.i love her and she changed my thinking
Patti is so awesome, so underrated, and so quintessentially American.
She knows how the universe works
if the world had a touch of patti smith
it would be a touch more peaceful and loving
Oh sweet patti thank you
Bendetto ❤️
I used to listen to this song over and over when she first released it in '88. And now I watched this for the first time tonight, and it made me cry. And I haven't cried in a very, very long time. Thank you, St. Patti.
Agree 💯 this is a very moving and powerful version of a classic song!
Me too.
I did a snot bubble.
This moved me.
God bless.
Same here!🥹🥰🥹
Me too. Why do you think that it is? It's so damned optimistic and beautiful.
And she presents it so well now in her wise age
She still has that light in her. 💛
So true, her eyes have the spark of a teenager in love and she is in her 70's. That makes me admire her so much.
and always will 💜
if you could see my face right now! this gave me soooo much hope and joy and a big big smile all over my face. thank you SOOOO MUCH everyone for making this happen! it's POWERful!
Me too 👍💜😀👊
This is so wonderful! I have hope!
Exactly.
I'm in tears :') beautiful how music makes you so emotional 🤘🏻🥺
I'm an atheist. But music like this makes me hope against hope that I'm wrong.
What does religion have to do with it? If nothing, it just affirms to me that we got nothing but each other. It strengthens my faith in people and nobody else.

I listen to this from time to time when I need to be uplifted. It gives me chills every time. Patti is a gem.
I was dreaming in my dreaming
Of an aspect bright and fair
And my sleeping it was broken
But my dream it lingered near
In the form of shining valleys
Where the pure air recognized
And my senses newly opened
I awakened to the cry
That the people have the power
To redeem the work of fools
Upon the meek the graces shower
It' s decreed the people rule
The people have the power
The people have the power
The people have the power
The people have the power
Vengeful aspects became suspect
And bending low as if to hear
And the armies ceased advancing
Because the people had their ear
And the shepherds and the soldiers
Lay beneath the stars
Exchanging visions
And laying arms
To waste in the dust
In the form of shining valleys
Where the pure air recognized
And my senses newly opened
I awakened to the cry
Where there were deserts
I saw fountains
Like cream the waters rise
And we strolled there together
With none to laugh or criticize
And the leopard
And the lamb
Lay together truly bound
I was hoping in my hoping
To recall what I had found
I was dreaming in my dreaming
God knows a purer view
As I surrender to my sleeping
I commit my dream to you
Where there were deserts
I saw fountains
Like cream the waters rise
And we strolled there together
With none to laugh or criticize
And the leopard
And the lamb
Lay together truly bound
I was hoping in my hoping
To recall what I had found
I was dreaming in my dreaming
God knows a purer view
As I surrender to my sleeping
I commit my dream to you
The power to dream to rule
To wrestle the world from fools
It' s decreed the people rule
It' s decreed the people rule
I believe everything we dream
Can come to pass through our union
We can turn the world around
We can turn the earth' s revolution
We have the power
People have the power
😭😭😭😭😭
Thank you for writing this out...👏

Would love to see this as USA's new national anthem
You cant rewrite the past. Move forward and make this song popular to sing at USA functions!!
@@candyabernethy997 our constitution simply does not permit non party politics, can't reach a majority any other way
@@jimmcnary ...actually.... You have just spent four years experiencing what happens when someone subverts the political party system using populism and media very skillfully.

That was beautiful - moved me to tears. It is time for the people to take back their power - even in many so-called democratic societies.
Yes, this is what the right wing is so afraid of; they'll torture and kill to step on this song's idea.
@@davidroberts1702 It goes for the left also.

The US imperial state is what this song fights against and dismantles credibility of.. we sit on hundreds and hundreds of Indigenous soverign first-Nations that have been continuously colonized by the US state system for hundreds of years. The concept of "country" (and its many "liberal" or "conservative" frames) operate outside native place-based existance.. they're an invisibilizing colonial narrative that upholds imperial violence and legitimizes its continued use of genocidal policies. We need to use decolonizing methodologies as strategy to help decentralize this state power, bring Indigenous resistance movements to the front pages, and fight to shift autonomy back to those it was stolen from.. thats what real justice is about; dismantling state violences. If we don't legitimize the system, the orange man has no power.
so-called democratic societies ... no doubt U thinking about the biggest rising power China + the biggest land mass Russia + Africa + don't forget the Middle East where people have the power
Could Patti Smith's smile be any bigger? Woohoo!
And on the small pan... one of the greatest Rock drummers
The smile on Patti... when hearing choir "people have the power" ....so much energy in that room... just priceless. I think she heard their voices!
"That the people have the power to redeem the work of fools."
PATTI SMITH!!! Best Choir! Choir! Choir! Yet. Very powerful.
Magnifique ,Parti ne vieilli pa!
I'm 70 and have just found this video and I am hooked, I have played it over and over and have yet to tire of it. Patti Smith is lovely and the 3 choirs are lovely too.
Patti Smith did a beautiful performance with Joan Baez. Now that’s a great one to watch.
This gave me freaking chills! Patti Smith is an icon. Rock on sister!
I'd definitely be that guying jumping the audience if I was there. Amazing rendition.
same feelings
Wow. She is still soooooo good after all these years!! Her voice isn’t changed at all
Every time I watch this video I cry. She loves really people, ordinary people. I'm 59 and I listen to her for 45 years.
Great words. Repeat time n time again. It will become so.
Wow, punk turned into almost church music. I like.
And it's pretty obvious who the happiest person in the room was...
Glad to be a woman of Patti Smith's generation - still finding hope, energy and yes, grace and warmth day by day. Namaste
My 10 year old daughter just performed People Have the Power at an event based on this wonderful arrangement. Originally she auditioned for the event with a drum arrangement, but had to play it on piano due to technical stage limitations (both videos are on my channel). Thank you Patti Smith and CHOIRx3. It's a timeless song, particularly in 2024, a year marked by the huge number of elections in some of the most populous countries in the world. I loved it, posted it and tagged it in my channel. At the same event, my daughter sang Seven Nation Army by the White Stripes. We did not realize the coincidence until before the performance. Meg White divorced Jack White (who wrote 7NA) and remarried Jackson Smith, the very son of Patti and Fred Smith, who wrote PHTP.
I am crying and smiling at the same time and shared with all I could! I have loved Patti Smith for many years, and this is so fantastic! Thank you to everyone who participated! It comes to me at a perfect time in my life to inspire!
She is so incredibly gracious and humble. A friend of mine saw her a few years back and had the privilege to go backstage and meet her. There was a small child with my friend maybe 3 or 4 years old, And Patti went over to her, And bent down on her level to speak to her, In her ear, And then she gave her her guitar pick 💜
South Africa needs this as a new Anthem!!! to unite the Madiba Nation...again...
LOVE you Patti - from my early dance days :))) Many memories :)))
Ah nikki....YES! ♡ This is a Global message for sure!
Wishing the best for your country as well. Love and Light!
Literally Amandla Awethu. You are right, not just SA though.
I have a CD with this song on it and every time I play it while driving my car, I sing along JOYOUSLY and as LOUDLY as I can. Watching this video made me cry like a baby - so moving and inspiring. Someone told me once that if you don't THINK you have power, it's the same thing as actually not having it, cuz you do nothing. Let's get out there and DO!!
Please sing / post this again, again and again.... Wake up people of the World...Look around--- Australian fires, US /Middle East / Famine / Water and Ocean ! etc etc etc Especially the young up and coming generations... USE YOUR VOICE !!! With love :)

This was amazingly fun
I love hearing Patti Smith's voice, she is amazing, and the audiences' voice is so energetic! Thank you Choir Choir!
I first saw her recently on the Nobel Prize rendition of It's A Hard Rain, which ended up really really good with a well deserved heartfelt ovation. She's so human, humble, down to earth. Now I'm a huge fan. This performance with the choir, which CZcams automatically sent me to, is a treasure for the ages. Her performance with the hand gestures is really cool, the people are so inspired, and her genuine smiles and earthiness fun to watch. Thank you!
From William Blake to Patti Smith -- a great visionary tradition!
I don't really know Patti Smith's music but I read her memoirs and fell in love with her sweet and honest soul.
We gonna need that sweet + honest soul believe me
Then you have a lot of great and iconic music to look forward to, enjoy Lynnette !
Her memoir is very poetic, Patti certainly is a true streak of beauty

In November 2022 I came back from China to New York and heard this song and with all that’s happening in China this almost brought me to tears. In the New York protest demanding the Chinese government loosen up the covid policy, and so many young people in China were standing out protesting already, risking all the lives and futures. I made a slogan inspired by this song “I awakened to the cry People have the power”. And I went to the protest.

Fascinating how she took over Stewart Copeland's percussive instincts in a second by getting the audience engaged. Nothing against Stewart Copeland, he is my absolute favorite drummer of all time, but this is Patti Smith. She lifted people in a hurry.
I was just dreamin' about not caring so much, now that I'm retired. And if I do mess up....just keep on pluggin, try not to hurt anyone. My mind always goes to Patti (my sister's name also) Smith's song at the Nobel celebration for Bob Dylan. I think of me in that same position....could I be human? Humble. A mentor of mine that I used to watch interact with patients and medical students, if you listen, they have lots of questions and watching a great teacher decide how to answer is art, IMHO. Some questions were outside Eric's wheelhouse and I was amazed to see the power of saying I don't know! His esteem rose cause he didn't know something??? Patti Smith teaches the same same, be honest. Great arrangement, does it make me feel like I was there? No, BUT, a little bit. Spread awesomeness. thank you, sincerely. Lawson di Ransom Canyon
