This episode probably has the most haunting ending in the whole show so far. That credits sequence of the children playing in the school yard was so eerie and haunting.

Aberfan was such a hard episode to watch. The sheer tragedy of the event and that ending. I was tearing up the whole episode but I think it was the ending where I finally broke down.
I cried as soon as his episode started and I did not know what this was about so Imagine how horrible it was when the tragedy happen. It was such a powerful episode but also so hard to watch. Olivia was increible I was amazed with her acting and that tear at the end of the episode.

I'm not sure if anyone noticed this small detail, but Netflix disabled the "Next Episode" timer for this episode. It lets the credits play out, watching the kids play on the playground.
Those poor babies. I cried watching the entire episode. Children are so dear to me, innocence at its finest. They weren’t ready to see how ugly the world is
I am watching crown without knowing any of the history and so when I watched this episode the school scene shocked me to my core, I just cannot fathom what it was like for the families that lost their loved one's.
Thank you for posting this. ‘Aberfan’ was a powerful episode and Olivia Colman’s, performance particularly in this scene, was astonishing. The pace, the restraint, the solitary tear ...
I can't say how interested I've suddenly become on Wales, Welsh language, its history, culture, folklore and religiosity ---- after watching the two Wales episodes in Season 3, Wales suddenly conquered/ occupied a big chunk of my heart! :) :) :) Merry Christmas and God bless you always!
That moment the hymn disappears into the background and the horn comes into play...Olivia’s magnificent acting... It is Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful. This episode hit me hard. Those poor children and parents. No parent should bury their child... unfortunately life can be so unfair and brutal.
My Aunt was Born on the same day aberfan happened. She’s 53, married for over 20 years and 3 children. I think about how much those children were robbed of a future, they should be where she is now, Grown up with families of their own. But that future was stolen from them so terribly. I pray they all are resting in peace. They will never be forgotten.
I don't think her political instincts were off base; to show up with entourage in the midst of the crisis would be the height of irresponsibility. As she asked: "For what reason, to put on a show?" She did go about a week, it seems from the series, which is about a reasonable time. In a day and age when Presidents are expected to make eloquent speeches at every mass shooting, it must be a very draining experience. Give Elizabeth the benefit of the doubt.
@@MsJENelson Exactly. It is a huge logistical problem to move the Oval Office, and it would only get in the way of First Responders, for no reason then for a photo opp. I'm sure the President is informed at the get go with every catastrophe, so his physical presence is not needed.
Some people believe when you shed a tear, if it is from the left eye, you're crying just because you're sad as right eye means happiness. We don't know if Olivia Colman's first tear came from left or right but the camera is on the left side and just showing the left cheek. So it is shown like the first tear is from left and she is crying for she's sad. What a detail!
And to boot with the detail, the tear from the right eye may have happened as well because at the same time she was happy she can Express emotion. It was a devastating tragedy and a personal victory wrapped in one scene

I think this scene is where I realised very clearly that the crown is one of the best made television series in the world and Olivia Coleman is perhaps one of the greatest actresses alive. What an amazing achievement. Although I’m not from Aberfan I did grow up in the next valley over and seeing my culture at the centre of a TV show like this is just crazy - but in a good way!
Was reading comments on another video about Aberfan. Someone commented on a ten year anniversary of the tragedy, that a person in the town said “we don’t have many teenagers here “. A town where few move away. Just seeing so few young people of a given age group would be a heartache

This entire episode made me cry. I almost had to turn off the tv when they were burying the children because when bad things happen to children it just tears me apart. I think it’s because I still see them as babies, 116 innocent, good babies. It’s a tragedy

shes a formidable actress, it takes extreme talent to just drop a single tear and convey so much with it, many actors think big dramatic crying and grief is the best acting but honestly this single tear conveys so much more emotion and sadness to us than a complete mental breakdown.
The children practicing all things bright and beautiful the day before broke my heart in to pieces. And that is was their last day of school and just a few hours later and they would have been home. Devastating and really beyond speech. What with this and zero reaction to Diana's death Queenie seems to misjudge key moments rather a lot.
Some great actors can cry on cue. It uses what they call "Emotional Recall", a method of acting where the actor remembers (recalls) a sad event that happened in their life, that allows them to cry when needed.
Beautiful scene, but they should have slowly raised the volume on the hymn while it was getting closer to her, rather than the general score. It also should have ended abruptly once the screen went black. Beautiful scene nonetheless

(Joking apart) 'the Crown' should reflect reality. Let the Queen & Prince Philip's lives of service remind us of the huge, tangible power for peace and stability the British monarchy is for everyone in Britain, the commonwealth and for the world. In the 19th & 20th centuries the U.S.A, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Greece suffered in various ways civil wars, political storms, and dictatorships. This shows what can go wrong in the absence of a head of state which is above politics, which opposes illegal dictatorship and helps keep the peace. If there are many reasons England, Wales, Scotland, Canada and Australia, have had no civil war since Culloden in 1746, having a constitutional monarchy is an important one. In the UK, 'peace' in formal speech is "The Queen's Peace". Of course the Queen & Prince Philip had their failings as parents, and Prince Philip could be tactless. Whatever mistakes the royal family have made, let us be grateful for the service they give, and for the difference the monarchy makes for the better, in the world. There will always be violence in the world, and billions of people who know or understand nothing of the British monarchy. The value of the British crown since the 1700s is, billions of people have lived under it without civil war, lynching, dictatorship in their lives.
