Hey Jimmy, I’m a boat builder on the Gold Coast in Oz, The little cracks in the back end of the leading edge cap are from differential flex between plywood skin and the leading each cap at the rabbit where the ply is glued and screwed. Not a big deal. We get the on yacht spars all the time, give it a little grind back with 36g resin disc, acetone wipe and reglass with 6oz E glass and West System epoxy, Peelply it, let it go off, rip the peelply off, sand it up and paint. Two hours work tops. Any questions Just ask, love your work by the way!

Jimmy, the fuel could dissolve some of the adhesives and sealant if they are not rated for the correct class and type to be around fuel. If you can boroscope the wing that may be the best way to inspect it. You may need to pull the fuel tanks out to inspect the spar and other wing structures. -Billy

So. after you did all the work for that family getting all the others running, I assume 100% at your expense, they back out of the deal. I also assume it then came back to them wanting more money now that you got them running for them? That's just really crappy of them to say the least. The SZD-36A Cobra is one of the last gliders that have a WOOD wing. You could look for a Cobra owner, or contact the Bielsko company in Poland, and FIND people qualified to inspect and if necessary repair such a wooden plane. Walking away is a bit too simple. Wood and linen is classic. And safety could safe your life.

I like whenever you do a video of a kit or a plane that somebody who has passed away owned or built cause it's something they have most likely spent lots of years and money and effort into and you get to put something from their legacy or what they left behind up on CZcams basically 4ever for everyone to see regardless of whether you buy it or not, that's awesome in my book. This thing is sweet just watch out for that wood I guess, bummer the wings can't come off to truck it.

🌴 🤔 well I’m not the brightest penny in the bunch , but👈🏼 those wings looked pretty sturdy from were in sitt’n , ya you could do a flex test to see if there’s big concern , , but if your worried about the seams coming apart , due to moisture or probably expansion, you could just dremel out those seams and fill them with epoxy and mill fiber , a little primer and paint your good to go , and not that expensive of a fix , having another mechanic working on it with video or pictures of the repairs I think would be your best bet , as for flying it home , to Florida, a bit of test flying to make sure the little lady is trust worthy and let er rip ! “ WHAT COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG !” , hey do you own a parachute 😂

I'm amazed it has very little (if any) dihedral to the main wings... The bad thing about wood, is it is much more susceptible to heat, and cold and humidity, than metal, and over time that stuff, mainly the glues, would dry out and not be flexable leading to delamination. That could be a very serious and a fatal outcome. awe hell, I think you should... a) keep it and b) fly it at least once! Then maybe park it.

All these negative comments about homebuilt aircraft and wood show a general ignorance and fear in the public which is why only a select few get to experience the thrill of playing in the clouds in something you built made from a natural material. Wood is a well proven and well respected material in aeronautics and can be tested, checked and maintained for many years in any climate. “Navy-on” that’s a first for me. I would say though wear a pilot pack when you maiden her…. Just in case - hope that gorgeous canopy can be jettisoned. Interestingly the Nah-vee-on is famously a descendant of the Mustang

Jimmy is this plane still in Texas? I thought when I watched your video you were somewhere down in the Medina Texas area... I used to live in Vanderpool I'm very familiar with wood airplanes if it's still here in Texas I could probably help you out.

There has got to be someone you could fly down there for an opinion.
You could easily use a hand held with a vox on it for a radio .

Personally, enjoy your Lancaire and 310 content....and similar types of planes. Stuff like this is such a "one off" that it has very little appeal for me. As far as the Elvis jet......it is certainly entertaining....but I'll never really understand the plan there. I can't imagine that converted RV ever being safe and roadworthy.

I wouldn’t worry too much about much about the wood. You’re in dry Texas and it looks like it’s hanger kept. A good going over with a good A&P mechanic and she would be fine.

The problem is if he does fly it back to Florida, then it's in a humid environment and how long will the wooden structure last before it becomes a sponge?

If you fly it home take a parachute with you with a homing beacon. We'd hate to lose you Jimmy. I don't trust it I know it flew but how long did it fly and Texas to Florida is a long time for a piece of furniture to be in the air.

As an experimental he had to keep a builders log with photos to show to the FAA inspector. It should show every step ofnrhe build including wings before they were closed in.
You should get that log with the plane.
