  • Welp, time to talk about RWBY again. I wonder how this will go down, this time? (Hopefully not another REUPLOAD)
Do note that I am human, this is my opinion, but I'm open to criticism and if you feel like my interpretation of this is wrong, all I ask is that you be respectful in the comments. I'm not perfect, and I'm willing to admit that I may be wrong on things.
Originally, this video was uploaded on the first of Feburary, however, since that would be on the death of Monty Oum, I took down the original, and reuploaded it here. I still stand by what I say in my video, but I never shat on Monty Oum, nor did I throw shade at him - I'm only apologizing for the poor timing on my part and only that part.
I've already apologized for that, and if you're gonna lord that over me, I have two words for you...
    GET BENT.
This was an honest mistake on my end, and I will not respect anyone who tries to lord a simple mistake on my end over my head.

As an amateur author, RWBY's writing feels like a first draft.
In fact, I'm at least 80% sure that these scripts don't go through any once over process after fixing grammatical errors. It makes me a bit sad, to be honest. RWBY has so much potential to be good, if only there were more than two 'fresh off the presses' writers.
Maybe there's not enough time, maybe they're just lazy, I'm not sure. All I know is, Miles and Kerry could really use a Beta.

      @yakkobutmute6000 Před 4 lety +113

I'd say that one of the reasons it's like this is because Rooster Teeth pushes for a new volume every year. Normally a show would be aired when it's ready, but RWBY has new volumes released every year which means that the story needs to be completed before some time around November, and the voice acting and animation need to be done way before an episode airs. At the start RWBY was just a passion project which meant that people like Monty were just working on it on their own time. Now that it's a full production though, it's being pushed by fans and Rooster Teeth to be made in a short amount of time.

Hyper_Ninja I agree. I am also not saying this should happen or wish this to happen, but say if Rooster Teeth does have struggles and things like that, I could see them pulling a Disney and give the rights over to someone else. Considering how RWBY has gained massive popularity with Japanese audiences, I could totally see them buying the rights and make it into a more traditional anime.

Hyper_Ninja Yup. It’s exactly that. Celtic Phoenix rewrite does a good job of polishing these elements. Good writing is shaped through redrafting and editing. For ideas are like legos. How they connect together and why should they are what separate a good from a great writer.

Salem’s team should NOT have gotten as far as they have. Like, the writers can’t be seriously telling me that less than a handful of people, who have exposed their identities to the Main characters in multiple times and have never truly won a fight, could permanently create an atmosphere of tension in the entire world? Even going as far back as V2-3 Cinder was CLEARLY evil and was obviously the one who put the fall maiden out of commission since she wasn’t wearing anything that could obscure her face, but was let into beacon easily. How does Beacon even do its Background checks on students???
Edit: I wanted to say a few more things: the silly plot contrivances in the series prevent Salem and her gang from feeling like real threats. The mcs have mashed potatoes for brains. I’m honestly surprised that oz or members of his group haven’t started trying to pinpoint the locations or activities of the VERY FEW warriors of Salem while simultaneously doing whatever plot bullshit they need to do. The number of people working for oz or one of the kingdoms far outnumber salem. This is inexcusable.

If tyrian had his original tail and they decided to cut it off because it was dangerous, that would count as mutilation and seeing how advanced bionics are in remnant It would make some sense that they feel similar in regards to a robotic appendage. That doesn't mean they shouldn't have done it or that he didn't deserve it, but coming from the viewpoint that it would be seen as amputation, then from their standpoint it would've been a similar decision to cutting off his arms and legs so he can't fight anymore. To OUR senses that seems inhumane and excessive regardless of the atrocities he's committed but it's also objectively the correct answer to disable him any any perpetrator in a permanent manner. To THEIR senses given the age and technological background they live in plus the fact that faunus limbs still count as limbs, and to people not racists probably as well regarded as arms and tongues and eyes, it makes sense not to cut off his tail unless absolutely necessary.

They obviously have great ideas for the endpoints they want to reach (this really pops up in the ends of volumes 5-7), and great themes they want to explore, they just don't have any idea how to reasonably get there. I can relate a bit as an author because you learn there there's a certain way you WANT things to move. That, you essentially are also a problem to your story in some ways. Even if you know where you want to end you very quickly realize there's problem with how you personally interpret and wish to have everything operate that contradicts the goals you set for yourself. I just thought of something that could have been interesting to explore. Since humans and Faunus can only produce only Faunus children, and the children will always be the same type of Faunus as their Faunus parent, you would think that some medieval kingdom might give Faunus who would breed with humans to produce specific types of Faunus for military purposes, because there is no doubt that Faunus who can change skin color at will or can fly would be extremely beneficial in a war.
Maybe even a family of noble Faunus who continued the idea of marrying only humans and others of their own race to produce more children of that specific type of Faunus, since they had been doing so for many generations and had grown wealthy by being a sort of warrior/mercenary business.
The series can even explore racism not just by humans on Faunus but certain types of Faunus on other types of Faunus? Have a bit of grey area in that mix. Humans are bigoted towards people with different skin color all around the world, so it's not such a stretch to think that in certain parts of RWBY's world, some Faunus might see other Faunus as lesser creatures, or even as animals.

The Grimm attack later in the volume is caused by his hacking of the heat system of Mantle, turning it off. Penny is a robot. Robots can be hacked. So why didn’t they just have Watts hack into Penny’s system and made her kill all those people. She wouldn’t be able to pass Robyn’s lie detector test because she actually killed them, the fanus in the crowd could see her killing people and blood would be on her. It could lead to interesting character development for Penny and all around would just be a better plot point.

    • @kidprime6863
      @kidprime6863 Před 13 dny

That does sound interesting but the whole point of Watts framing Penny was to paint Ironwood in a bad light in the eyes of Mantle just like Cinder did in the Battle of Beacon. (Plus, Cinder framed Penny up as an infiltration android sent by Atlas to spy on the kingdom of Vale after exposing her as a robot to the public) Penny may be the Protector of Mantle but not everyone in Mantle fully trusts her as she is one of Ironwood subordinates. As after Tyrian massacred those people at the rally, they didn't hesitate to point fingers at her. That's because Ironwood's inability to balance the progress of the Amity Project with mending the problems in Mantle alienated Robyn and the Mantle citizens who feel neglected and vulnerable. In a way, Penny's role is an attempt to save face. Thus, even if her innocence is proven, it won't change their opinions about Ironwood's actions. Especially with how he's supposed to explain how everything got sabotaged because of his negligence. Plus, Watts and Tyrian's mission is to cause chaos, confusion and distrust in both cities as a diversion to buy Salem time for her get there and to do that they'll make it look like as if it's the Fall of Beacon all over again. Also Robyn did admit to Qrow that her Semblance alienates her from people including Ironwood.

Ironwood also: congratulated Ruby on her attempt to stop Cinder in Volume 2, approached Yang after she “broke” Mercury’s leg and empathized with her position of seeing things that aren’t there due to intense situations, told the kids at Beacon “No one would fault you if you leave.” and defended Weiss at a party when the people there were being assholes.
Also if the Grimm are attracted to negative emotions (fear, hate, things like that) then you would think racism and slavery wouldn’t exist in this world and yet they do. Menagerie should realistically look like Old Yharnam from Bloodborne.
Also they have some “They’re just kids” message when the world is constantly under the threat of monsters that do nothing but cause destruction and mayhem, you would think it would be something like the Walking Dead where no not everyone is a fighter but all notions of kids being left out of stuff because they’re “just kids” would be out the window.

I agree that Robyn is a terrible character. Not only is she poorly written, but she is also one of the main reasons for most of the fighting in V7 if you think about it. There is not a single fight other than with grimm and perhaps the Watts/Ironwood fight where she didnt either start the fight or help cause it. This wouldnt necessarily be a bad thing if written well however something very important that weighs this down even more is that shes god awful at fighting and would have lost every battle shes fought if not for Clover AND Qrow. It honestly feels like she only exists as a character to fill in 2 key roles.
    1. Shes someone running opposed to Jacques and is supposed to starkly contrast him, which sets up the whole election narrative. (Which honestly could have just been Ironwood running for re-election vs Jacques)
    2. Shes there to both get people to trust each other (hence her semblance being a convenient lie detector/plot device) and to sow dissent via starting fights, being against Ironwood initially, and being one of the reasons why Ironwood and co. lose trust in team RWBY and co.
Upon noting these things I would rather not even call her a character really as she is so important to the story but so underdeveloped and useless outside the two reasons mentioned that she might as well be considered a walking, talking, plot device.
On another note, while there are a few things I disagree with in your video they arent really major enough to warrant criticism.

Something that I think the show in general, or at the very least Team RWBY needs is to have someone who's a Peacekeeper. And more specifically have 'likes being a Peacekeeper' as their first and main character trait. Even if they're just constantly shouting 'Priorities', it would save a lot of trouble.
On the case of Yang and Blake telling Robyn about the comms tower, it would be expected from this character because Robyn and Ironwood are practically at each other's throats. This character going to Robyn in secret, preferably alone, and saying 'There are literally bigger things going on than this election', would be something to expect. Then they could single-handly take the blame for that action when Ironwood calls the team/them out on it. Whether or not Ironwood continues to decide on arresting the team/them alone, they can at the very least try to pacify the Aces because 'there are literally bigger things going that need to be prioritised over arresting the people who have so far been helping'.
--Sidenote: Ironwood is justified considering there's also Ruby and Oscar's lie about the Lamp and Ozpin, but I don't agree with the sudden hatred and at each other's throats attitude/tension team RWBY and the Aces have.
--Sidenote-to-Sidenote: Honestly, I think Ironwood is fine. He's coming close to/is flying off the handle because everything seems staged and everything seems to be working against him. (I haven't seen ep13, don't know what happens)
On the case of Qrow, Clover, Robyn and Tyrion in ep12...
-Clover, there are literally more important things than arresting Qrow. You have Tyrion, one of Salem's followers, in custody and are transporting him, worry about getting him there first.
-Robyn, stop flying off the goddamn handle at the drop of a pin.
-Qrow, why the hell are you cooperating with Tyrion? He tried kidnapping Ruby, attacked the rest of team RNJR and literally tried to kill you. You Even Said You Have A Score To Settle With Him So Why Work With Him Against Clover.
I was honestly hoping Clover would be that Peacekeeper character, as much as he's an Ace. I was hoping he'd at the very least be smart about it and even just 'not like' the idea of Qrow being under arrest whilst Mantle is being Evacuated and Salem's people have infiltrated Mantle and Atlas.
--Sidenote: Tyrion, considering what happened and him taking advantage of the events, was good. He's doing fine in my opinion because of the events that are happening, it's just the other three that I don't like.
All in all, I really hated ep12.

The writers have shown time and again they are willing to throw away character progress, arcs, and common sense in order to set up fights they'd like to see happen. You can tell they have key points planned out but they have absolutely no idea how to organically get their characters from point A to point B. So they just start acting weird around the end of the season to catch up to some non existent character growth they forgot to put in.

I really do believe brown (amid other dull) colouring is an extremely powerful tool when it comes to character design, as it can be used to emphasise a bleak tone. It's usually best used sparingly however, typically towards an end of a show, as overuse can nullify the effect it should be having on viewers. How long is to long, you may be asking? Well, I'm pretty sure having a character wear it for half the show, even after her whole "oh no I'm depressed" arc is a tad much (looking at you Blake)

In terms of plot holes I didn’t realize how Robyn Hill should’ve been arrested as well. And I’m actually impressed how much 2D animation was used this volume but I think V6 did a better job with that around the end of it. I’m not sure if you don’t know this but RWBY has two new writers: one who was an author and the other was a guy who was already working for Rooster Teeth, just to let you know if you are not aware.
I also understand why you took down the initial video for what you said in the apology response but I literally think that RT couldn’t care less. You only see re-tweets from RWBY’s Twitter account of fan’s paying respect with art but nothing from Rooster Teeth’s actual account, not a single thing. But with CZcams’s premiere feature it’s a double-edge sword and makes me question if it’s actually a good thing.

      @RandomGirl119 Před 4 lety

I'm pretty sure videos getting taken down aren't a conscious effort from RT, though. For example, they love seeing people's reaction videos, but unless your video is structured to where you either have a facecam or animated background as the main part of the screen with the episode in a smaller portion of the screen, it gets taken down for copyright, and RT have to go and tell CZcams to put it back up.

I dont cosplay, but I loved that Monty made these designs with cosplayers in mind- not too complex or restricting and pockets/pouches for practicality. I feel like these new designs are not only less iconic, but generally more clutter. [Dont get me wrong, I love complex design, but when a sort of precedence is set for cosplay-friendly costume is set, it's kinda...disappointing? The show has a real hard problem with the team RWBY facing the consequences of choices/mistakes. In the last part of volume 6 they steal a military aircraft and end up fighting with the person in charge of the military base there who goes in to stop them from stealing HER equipment and then disable her mech which was designed to save the town in the event of a Kaiju type grimm which actually does attack the town. Team RWBY defeat the Kaiju monster but not once did a self check of "We were almost the reason that town was destroyed". Then there is Ironwood's change in plan for the Amity coliseum; he had no time to save mantle and make sure the relic and maidens were save so decides to abandon Mantle so he can keep the maiden and Relic out of Salem's grasp; Team RWBY doesn't like the fact Mantle would be abandon and confronts Ironwood and decide to ruin his plan only leave as Salem arrives and not only did no save Mantle but put the relic and Atlus in her grasp. In conclusion Team RWBY keep doing a "the ends justifies the means" when it suits them and fight others when it doesn't and never deal with any blow back when their decisions goes wrong, it's only been a issue with me these past two volumes and i hope this isn't a trend they plan to keep doing in the future.

One of the ironies I kind of enjoy about RWBY is how the basic worldbuilding is overflowing with potentially interesting ideas: Auras, semblances, dust, the grimm, silver eyes, advanced robotics, the potential of transhuman augmentation and since we're stuck with it, magic. But the show somehow chooses to do nothing with any of them. They're all kind of just there and the focus is on melodrama.

It was all part of the fun, and I feel everyone that watched the show knew it wasnt an amazing show, hell calling it a good show would even be pushing it. But it had so much passion, and an interesting enough world to keep me coming back. But literally all of those things aren't in the show anymore. There has been 1 or 2 new character designs, the action is straight doo-doo now, the world isn't nearly as interesting. So when the only thing the show excelled at is gone, why even bother? I haven't watched Volume 7 yet, and it sounds boring and annoying, so at this point, I might just wait till the series ends and then see how it went and watch I it if it is good enough.

When compared to other shows that are considered great (Full Metal Alchemist, Cowboy Beebop, Death Note, etc.) Rwby doesn't even come close to that same level of quality on any level. Monty in particular seemed to just be happy to be making a show, and I truly think that volume 1-3 was the best they could have done at the time. I didn't watch volume 7 until this weekend because i had the feeling that all the faunus discrimination would be underwhelming, because if the show would show it to us instead of just talking about it, they should do it here, in Atlas, because Vale was too good, Mystral was a big kingdom of wich they showed us very little, and Vacuo is supposed to be a kingdom where you are welcomed if you can survive, no matter what you are. We were in Atlas and we didn't see anything about the faunus discrimination (i'm speaking about something that would justify some of them thinking violence was a good way of fighting back), and considering how V7 ended, it would be awful if they showed it next volume. That's why i didn't like a bit when they killed Adam in V6, the faunus discrimination died too (i feel like he was the only way the show had to let us feel what it really was to be a faunus, Adam might be a shit person, but he became a leader for a reason, and it seems like many people, including the writers, forgot about that).
And, as someone who just watches the show and doesn't really analyze it, i felt Blake forgot how to fight. In the final fight, she only used her semblance once, and it might have been when she had no aura left (first they added that cool effect to let us know when someone ran out of aura, and then people had their aura depleted twice in the same fight, and then Blake uses her semblance when she had that effect before, so i don't know what it means anymore).

A lot of things in Season Seven when it came to the Atlas Military and Government didn't make sense.
For example, in the last episode, when Ironwood abandons Mantle, it's really out of character. He's a general so he's gotta understand that he is fighting a war against a faction which can keep replenishing it numbers whereas the the kingdom of Atlas has only so many people. If he abandons Mantle, he abandons [ perhaps ] millions of new recruits. Those recruits would be vital in fighting a war like the one they're fighting with Salem. They definitely could not win a war of attrition but it would buy them time to find a solution. He also wouldn't just shoot Oscar because inside Oscar is the person he need to win the war. Yes, it has been said that Salem can't be killed. Key word however would be killed. Ozpin, despite saying he doesn't most likely will have a plan.
This video made good points about Atlas's Government aswell so for that, go watch the video.
On another note, Atlas is said to be the Military Superpower yet can't arrest a few kids? Atlas needs a buff. It was never portrayed to be the Military Superpower it is so I say in Volume 8, they need to be a bit more than some "stormtroopers". Also, I prefer the designs of the Atlas stuff from the first three volumes. I would also like more conventional designs apart from just mechs and robots, maybe things like Combat Trucks, Tanks, APCs, so on.

For me, I lost the interest (as well as all the shit RT has been doing... I don't think I need to name them) in the show. Yes, the fight scenes have gotten better. Yes, the world is somewhat interesting. But as you have said, none of that matters IF the show has bad writing as well as outside influence. I feel if they stopped the show for two years and continued to work on it and set things in stone, it might be a good show. But unfortunately, next season is apparently in October and that REALLY has me concerned. However, I do still keep up with the show (from outside sources)
Now, I made my own version of the Faunus War. Completely different and is actually a WAR.
The Faunus, pissed at getting handed the short stick, decided to take advantage of the on-going depression that was hitting Remnant. From within, the Faunus spread rumors of how another war was brewing, ultimately making each of the four kingdoms wary of each other.
From there, the Faunus then began to attack small towns, but not causing enough to cause any major concerns with the kingdoms. That is until the Faunus successfully managed to hit a small Vale weapons depot. Causing a bit of alarm to the kingdom and sending a squad there to check it out. The Faunus, knowing this, made sure to make as little Human casualties as possible, and making their deaths more numerous. The Faunus made the head dude in charge give an all clear and sent the Vale forces back to the kingdom
From there, the Faunus began raiding more and more, collecting weapons and supplies until it was too little, too late for Vale. They realized what was going on but at that point, the Faunus were at their doorstep and sacked Vale within a few months. Vale fell due to lack of modern weaponry at the time. They mainly had bolt actions.
The Faunus then moved their sights on Vacuo, which was under immense pressure from internal collapse due to the depression and how heavy the Great War fucked them up. The Faunus near Vacuo managed to create enough chaos until the main force arrived. Vacuo fell within two months due to their economic and military (lack of) position.
Atlas, not wanting to spare any kind of supplies, pulled out once Mantle was under siege. Since all the airships were still relatively new and Atlas was the leading manufacturer, Mantle was lost. However, there was still fighting for a year and a half inside the city until they were liberated.
Mistral kind of fell. It was more along that lines of Vichy France of WW2. The Faunus managed to take the main city but only advanced a few miles until all of Anima surrendered. With this, (almost) Remnant was under the Faunus Army's rule
Vale decided to take on a rather risky initiative. They allowed criminals, even the worse ones, to form into groups and push the Faunus out. They did and with that, took control of the weapons depots and allowed Vale to make weapons once again. It was at this point, Vacuo managed to keep control of a vital city named Meso and began hastily make weapons. Eventually, the two kingdoms were liberated and met up and then took the fight to Mantle. Then focused on Mistral. Menagerie would be as if Operation: Downfall were a thing. (For those of you who don't know, Operation: Downfall was the planned invasion of Japan before the nukes were the option in WW2)
All of the war was around 8 years. (I know the last parts kinda fell apart, but I'm re-working everything out)
