I was a Chieftain tank gunner and I used to help the driver down the tank park, only so much a gunner can do in a day to keep busy.

I hear you. When in Garrison, especially around holidays, there's not much for the junior officers to do. Our Sergeants and Soldiers don't want us hanging around, lol. You know what I mean. It's like having Dad drive you on a 1st date. The sooner he leaves the better. I get it. If you hang around at Battalion HQ, and are not looking busy, the Majors will put you to work (got me twice). So, I'd hang out at the post library half the time prepping for Grad School Entrance Exams. LOL, American tax dollar at work. What?! The rest of the Lieutenants were at the nuddy-bar or golfing.

I was a U.S. Army Artillery Officer 20 years ago, but was always attached to Armored Cavalry units. If you're structured like we are, that vehicle following the Company Commander around will have a Lieutenant in it coordinating your Battalion's fire missions and Company level too. That's the job I use do, back when I was a soldier once, and young. Glad to see there are still bad-ass like you Cadets out their to carry the torch. I too was an Officer Cadet, training in those lovely Texas summers. Remember to keep your humor while going through these basic-training type camps. When you're wet and cold and miserable you have to be the leader and somehow get everyone laughing about it. Lots to learn about leadership, hope you enjoy the subject if your an Officer Cadet. LOL, it will be coming up again and again. Good luck guys. Also, don't play Delta-Force over there and get yourself hurt trying to score a few more points. A career in the Army is like a professional sports player. If you get hurt bad enough, they will fire you and send you packing with a heath-disability payment. But you're the one limping around the rest of your life. Keep it safe in training. You're no good to your unit injured.

I'm glad I found you British Cadet guys. I want to pass something along they don't tell you when you're an Officer Cadet (in the U.S. Army anyway). If you wish to serve as an Officer in certain other Armies (i.e. U.S. Army, my personal favorite) there were ways to get 4-year stints, 20 years ago. I bet you a British Pound they still exist, probably have expanded the program. Here's how I found out about it:
My first supervisor as a U.S. Army Artillery Lieutenant was a Marine Corps Captain [God hates me; not important to the story]. My second supervisor was a Major in the Melanesian Army. My third supervisor was a Captain in the Canadian Artillery. LOL, I'm not making this up. I damned near made 1st LT before I had a U.S. Army Officer in charge of me [I'll tell Dad's story in a minute, weirder than mine].
Anyhow, that's how I found out about this. If you want to juice-up your career in the British Cavalry, nothing will pop-out at the promotion boards like Served in "United States Army 2nd Cavalry Regiment 20xx to 20yy." One can not pass up that promotion packet; one is compelled to read more, if one is a British Officer reading that. With all the joint ops we do around the world, you could track your mid-career as a Liaison Officer, when you get tired of being shot at in front-line units.
We've got lots of bases around the world, and in most states (remember, Hawaii... Colorado, really nice places). Disclaimer: Also Afghanistan, Iraq, soon to be Iran, maybe North Korea, Canada, you never know. Yes, this could also horribly back-fire on you, as you will be going to war in a U.S. unit, because you will have trained your U.S. Lieutenants or Captains and many other U.S. soldiers for just that purpose, lol.
And if you want to get all G.I. Joe, and do Ranger School to tag yourself qualified for Special Forces missions, you would join several Army Officers I've know who were Special Forces, Still Lieutenants, but not infantry, hell, not even combat arms! Who do you think is planning supply missions for Special Forces operations? Special Forces-qualified Supply Officers. I graduated with one. I'm guessing you have better odds of picking up gee-wiz schools over here (airborne, air-assault, path-finders, etc.). Not many British Cavalry Officers are walking around with U.S. Army school patches on. If that doesn't get you laid, you're not doing this right.
Dad's story: Back in Vietnam, when Dad was a young Lieutenant, his first Platoon Sergeant (right-hand man) had been a Colonel. Yes, you read it correctly. The Colonel was being forced out due to draw-downs in forces, and need 1 more year for full retirement, so they let him stay on as an E-8/Master Sargent. Then he retired with full Colonel pay. Also note, Dad started Air Defense Artillery, but ended up Commanding Chemical Corps units. Sometimes your military career will take you places you would of never guessed. I spent most of my time with Tanks, Infantry, and Cavalry. I forgot what the Howitzers looked like. Anyhow, hope this helps someone, some kind of way.
Now mount up, charge on, and stab the enemy in the ass for me.

I’m off to start my phase one for the RAC at the start of next year. From what I understand at phase one I’ll not know what role I’ll be going into till phase two, is that correct?I’d like to be light cavalry and attached to the QDG. but from what Iv read you have to put options down but might not get what you put down.
Any knowledge of what happens in these phases about job choices would be much appreciated.
