  • Hello and thank you for watching.
Today I am addressing a question asked by Dean Thornquist.
Dean said, “I’d love to see a video regarding recommended mentalism books for the beginner.”
Dean, I hope you are watching because I put this video together to answer your request.
Beginning Mentalism examines my history and philosophy of performance mentalism as well as my recommendations for the beginning mentalist.
I referred to a few resources on the video.
The first and most important is Richard Osterlind.
You can find Richard’s material here:
    www.osterlindmysteries.com/
I highly recommend that you look into the offerings of Richard Osterlind.
I also referred to the Tarbell series by Dan Harland and Penguin Magic.
You may find out more about the video Tarbell series here:
    www.penguinmagic.com/s/Tarbel...
Another reference I made was to a young mentalist appearing on America’s Got Talent.
Actually, the show was Britain’s Got Talent, and this is the link:
    • 8 YO Girl Issy SHOCKS ...
    see also:
    • Issy Simpson: Kid SHOC... for America’s Got Talent.
    Her name is Issy Simpson.
She mixes magic, mentalism, and mental magic, but she is delightful.
I hope you enjoy what you see here.
If you do, please subscribe and please comment.
I’d love to hear from you.
    Much love,
    David Dellman

I've always classified "mental magic" as a classification of an effect. Where as mentalism was a category of performance. or another way to word it, at least as how I have classified it: "mental magic" is to "coin magic" as "mentalism" is to "close up magic"

Awesome video as always. As a fellow practitioner of the arts that both does actual and performance magic I can see the value here. However I've always been of the mind personally to always present performance as pure tricks regardless of how much actual energy work may or may not be involved. Mostly because for the average person or layman they dont' understand or accept the possibility of something else. Those that do can vary from extremists to hostile believers. what you say around 16:40 kinda sums up my point on this second part.

    • @DavidDellman
      @DavidDellman  Před 4 lety +1

I agree. Its not the majority view of mentalists, but then most mentalists don't believe in real magic or in ESP. I do believe, and so it is important to me to be thoroughly honest in everything I do. I don't want to damage or inhibit genuine spiritual experience. Instead, in performance, I want to point in the direction of the real. My performance style is what you see here.. its a conversation.

That is such a difficult choice, Lance and one I never made. I buy everything Osterlind makes, but if you want to get started, I suggest the Easy to Master Mental Miracle series. This was Osterlind's first, and what I like about it is that the principles, once learned, will serve you well in so many ways and with so many routines that you will develop. Much of my show today contains principles from that series. I don't do the exact routines he does, but I have used the principles I learned in that series more than any other series.

Bob Cassidy's books are also fantastic. And another book I will recommend is Ted Lesley's Paramiracles, It has some real good stuff in it. Black Magic, The Working Performer's Switch Pad and the chapter on "Trick of Raised Consciousness" is fantastic. Max Maven's Prism is also good, but you covered that on another video. As for Mind, Myth and Magick, you will have to read through many effects to find something that suits you. Trionic, is nice, but requires a massive set-up.Mailefactor p.269, Pinance p.247, SOREcery p.245 and Riffle No1 p.353 is a good book test. Unfortunately the book is too big to go through everything now, but there are some gems in it--if you are prepared to go through this massive book.

The Mentalist is a Sherlock Holmes-style character, a keen observer of human behavior. While I think the character's abilities may be a bit exaggerated for entertainment purposes, I have met some people that reminded me of the character. One, in particular, was a military interrogator. Most mentalists avoid tricks with playing cards because playing cards are associated with traditional magic. Many mentalists opt instead to use ESP cards or other symbol decks. There are some nice commercially available photo image decks that come with downloadable tutorials. Both Penguin and Alakazam make one. My suggestion would be to look into those. I don't know of any one resource devoted exclusively to mentalism with playing cards but in his many video series, Richard Osterlind offers many excellent mentalist effects with playing cards. First of all I want to say it is a great content you made.
Your video it self could help tons of mentalist and I'm thank you for you're time and effort to made this.
Now I have a question you mentioned about the difference between mentalism and mental magic was intentional.
I'm quite confused about the word 'intentional'
Do you think mental magic can not be intentional?
It will be really helpful to explain more about it.
    Thanks!

In the context of this presentation, what I meant is that mentalists tend to be more precise in their intent. I did not mean to suggest that mental magicians, as opposed to mentalists, are not intentional. As an example, a mentalist might intend to demonstrate telepathy, whereas a mental magician might not give as much thought to whether what is demonstrated is telepathy or clairvoyance. It simply doesn't matter as much to the mental magician because the mental magician is perhaps more concerned with audience enjoyment. These are generalities and not true of each circumstance or performer

Mentalism is not in my opinion a branch of magic which is a branch of theater. Mentalism, mind reading, the telling of future events is in my opinion all in the same branch as the Pseudo science of Psychic ability and mentalism is a form of trickery or a con, not theater in my opinion. The theater magician is honest, in my opinion because it is a theater craft. It is intended to entertain and magicians for thousands of years have made no claim that magic (theater) is real. Mentalism in my opinion even when I knew the late David Hoy, who invented the tossed out deck - I don't consider mentalism as very good entertainment.

Someone is much more higher and mightier than the rest of us. But why are you so brittle? If magicians don't claim to do real magic then why do they call themselves magicuans? I've seen your videos. You come off to me as a stereotypical magician for hire. Mentalism is entertaining just as well as a hypnosis show. When I watch stage magic, which is very rare, it is not entertaining to me. I don't put it down, it's just not entertaining to me. Mentalism is a branch of magic whether you say so or not. You don't make that descision, the viewer does. There is a lot of entertainment that falls into the realm of modern "magic.". Get over yourself.
