    Today, a Malaysia Airlines passenger jet carrying 295 people was shot down - allegedly by pro-Russia separatists - in eastern Ukraine, dramatically changing the scope of Ukraine's months-long conflict. On Wednesday, VICE News correspondent Simon Ostrovsky spoke to US Ambassador to Ukraine Geoffrey Pyatt, who said he has no doubt Russia is arming the separatists, effectively encouraging the escalation of the fighting.

    The US ambassador says Poroshenko is the best change Ukraine has at ridding itself from corruption.
    He's the man who, back in 2006, the US were calling the "disgraced oligarch" and said that "Poroshenko was tainted by credible corruption allegations."
    If he's their best hope, their corruption ridding mission seems doomed to fail.

    • @BritishJuche
      @BritishJuche Před 7 lety +8

      George your understanding of geopolitics is limited. Libya for example was nothing to do with radical Islam, indeed, US intervention overthrew a secular govt and led to the rise of IS in the country. Syria is also more complicated - the US funds al-Nusra and many other radical Islamist groups, just as they funded al-Qaeda and the Taliban in the 80s. Aaand you seriously think the US never tried to control another country!? Do you have any idea how many democratically elected governments have been overthrown by the US since WWII?

    Of cause Russia helps Pro-Russian militants - what a revelation! If you follow these dispatches, you can see most locals genuinely support anti-Kiev cause. Why shouldn't Russia support the Donbass if the US support Kiev?

    I certainly agree with the ambassador when he says Ukraine needs to do away with the culture of corruption that's pervasive in that part of the world, but concerning Russia's arming rebel groups, talk about the kettle calling itslef black! The US has a long history of doing the same thing with the consequences just as dire. Look at the situation in Syria. Two wrongs don't make a right (I say that assuming we are to believe every word of the ambassador in this intereview about Russia), but this is hypocricy plain and simple.

    If you've been watching all of these, you can't help but have noticed that there was huge support for secession in Eastern Ukraine. US just wants to blame Russia, and act like people in Eastern Ukraine doesn't want to secede.

    As an American I am kind of ashamed, the citizens of Donbass that have died (non fighters) in shelling that comes from the Ukrainian soldiers indiscriminately firing is and was a real thing. Why didn't he ask about the Church Custodian that was killed yards from the CHURCH on a previous episode...... what about Ukraine's behavior! Most of Donbass wants to be free of Ukraine!

    On this very show we have seen a number of non regular militia groups fighting on the side of the Kiev. Not once does the western media even concede the possibility of the plain being short down by any other faction except the Russian supported separatist.

      Ukraine had just come out of a power vacuum at this point, there were still many pro-Russian politicians, high levels of corruption and very dysfunctional regional governance. It was no way appropriate to suddenly start dropping billions of dollars and HIMARS into the country, as it would have led to a catastrophic implosion of the military situation, and a similar quagmire to the middle east. NATO actually learned their lesson and spent many years preparing to get involved, helping Ukraine to head toward democracy and internal stability. We are now seeing the results of this patient approach.
