On Sunday, a referendum was finally held by the breakaway Donetsk People's Republic in eastern Ukraine on whether to declare independence. Polling stations were set up all over the city. With no independent monitors present, the DPR used locals to ensure that the vote was free and fair - a provision that hardly inspired confidence.
VICE News correspondent Henry Langston visited Donetsk to witness the ballot and ask people what they were voting for, but he and his crew quickly ran afoul of masked gunmen who were patrolling the station. They forced the crew inside the occupied administration building, where they were detained, searched, and interrogated for three hours before being allowed to leave. The experience offered some indication of what press freedom in the DPR would look like should it ever become independent.
Preliminary results announced around midnight showed a voter turnout of 74 percent, of which 89 percent voted yes. While seemingly suspect, the results were cheered by the DPR, which declared itself an independent state on Monday. But people are unsure of what the future holds for the separatist ambitions of Donetsk and Luhansk. Just last month, a poll showed that only 18 percent of people in eastern Ukraine wanted independence. With the Ukrainian government refusing to recognize the referendum and Russia backing its result, the next few days could prove pivotal for the entire region.

The separatists lectured this guy while detained about the failings of the British Empire, I find the same thing happening to me when I criticize what Russia is doing in and around Ukraine. They tell me about all the terrible things that the US has done or is doing.. and it leaves me to wonder, why should that matter here? I can only voice my opinion if my nationality is sinless?? My country isn't great and that has no effect on my opinion of other nations.
It's like they see it as an excuse, that if the US has done this worst thing ever it means they are allowed to do something slightly less worst. NO! There's no excuse, you and the US are just both in the wrong. Accept that

Would the people in the USA want that to happen? No because its dumb. If you want to be in Russia, move to Russia... That simple.

If they would rather be under Russian than Ukrainian protection until things get sorted out properly in Kiev, I don't see a problem with that, but secession needs to wait until there is a coherent and legitimate Ukrainian state to secede from. No matter what referendums and ethnic ties are used to justify these events, the outside appearance is that Russia is taking advantage of the weakness of the Ukrainian state to expand its borders. If this isn't the case, why didn't they try to claim independence before things went to hell?

As a person from the portion of Donetsk region occupied by the RUSSIAN ARMY (not leaving it for a single day) I'll figure this insanity out:
    1. People actially voted for joining the Russian Federation (referendum for it was promised by Russian-controlled separatists on 18.05.2014)! People in Donetsk WERE SURE THAT RUSSIA WOULD ANNEX OUR REGIONS LIKE THEY DID IN CRIMEA. PEOPLE WANTED NEW PENSIONS AND PAYMENTS AS HIGH AS IN RUSSIA AND CRIMEA (in reality, standard of living in RF doesn't differ much from Ukrainian.)
    2. Being manipulated by Russian propaganda people cried out a year ago while voting on referendum "STOP FEEDING UKRAINE!! LET'S BLOCK SUPPLIES FROM OUR REGIONS FOR KYIV AND LEAVE ALL INCOMES HERE "
    3. The number of locals fighting against Ukraine in Donetsk DOES'T EXCEED 20%. The majority of separatists are Russian mercenary (soldiers of fortune) and soldiers of Russian regular Army (they actually gain all battles)

I'm for the Donetsk Peoples Republic, I think they handled things well in a democratic manner, they do need to work on how they handle journalists trying to report on the goings on inside their region. I don't see a better solution for Ukraine by trying to force this region back into their country, it would be toxic for their people.

At 4:26 caption states "there are no outside observers", but what Yury said in fact was "наблюдателей нам никто не прислал извне" - meaning "nobody from the outside had sent us any observers". Which kind of makes sense because foreign countries support Kiev and wouldn't recognize the legitimacy of such referendum in the first place! But you can't make something even less fair by declining to observe it, that's like proving your statement by claiming "I've already said that earlier, see".

However Russian media presented the revolution as a fascist anti-Russian coup, which is obviously false, since a large proportion of the people supporting the revolution were Russian, Jewish, and of other nationalities. People in Russia and Eastern Ukraine unfortunately believe this propaganda, which is the cause of the current conflict.

Artem Goutsoul This is not correct, Yanukovich was overthrown by Neo-Nazi's , extreme right sector GEO political movements. "Revolution" was lead by goons and USA via CIA and Corporate Militia's ( remember the snippers ? that was CIA ). Self - Appointed ( current government in Kiev ) has already descended into Western-Psuedo-Feudal status ... the real issues here are the IMF / NATO ... Nato needs to create a new conflict " GOOD / GUY " bad guy scenario ... and the IMF wants to control all money exchanges. You can see this already coming to fruition as USA / CIA chose Biden's son to be head of 'Gas' exchange.

Romania / Hungary are already un-happy with EU , once they have 2 million refugees or more - look for them to leave the EU , and Poland won't be too happy once a couple of million refugees head there way.
