American Men To Be Automatically Registered For Military Draft

- All men aged 18 to 26 will be automatically enrolled in the Selected Service System, according to a new plan from House lawmakers. This is the federal database used for a military draft in case of a national emergency. Currently you are required to register and if you don’t you could face possible jail time, be ineligible for federal programs, or be permanently ineligible for federal and state employment. You likely don’t remember ever registering for this and that’s because when you take out federal student loans, you’re automatically registered. In some states, it happens when you get a driver’s license or register to vote. However two years ago, they removed it from the student loan process which raised the amount of unregistered people. So instead of facing jail time or complications in your future for not registering for something you’ve never heard of - they’re just gonna automate it. The plan is expected to be finalized by Congress this fall, and it’s being viewed as a cost saving measure because there hasn’t been a draft in over 50 years.

Well, in peacetime sure. But the draft will (theoretically) only kick in to prevent you and me from being outnumbered 37-1 by Russki conscripts, which might manage to be worse.

Having spent 42 months in jail it's not that bad. I actually enjoyed the 21 months of it that I had to do in the Fed system. Worst parts were spent in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice transfer units. No AC in buildings so hot you can't fall asleep until after 4am when it cools down a little
The options are go to war or get a free housing for free food for x amount of time. And you become a burden to politicians wallets. I see all win here.

How many homeless do you think claim to be a vet, but aren't and are only preying on guilt/generosity? The VA isn't great, but they have resources for vets to get back on their feet.

It's a brotherhood and you serve your brothers more than anything. And vets get good treatment but it could improve immensely. Shut down the VA hospitals all together. Give each elegable vet a va I'd card and allow them to get whatever treatment at any dr or hospital that they are near or need. This would save billions. No over head except for va employees processing paperwork . No maint upkeep no Dr's or nurses on staff nothing. Literally billions saved. It's a pow we play by politicians so it'll never happen.

Vets have a higher than average rate of home ownership and business ownership. we can always do better at things, but don't get it twisted, being a veteran in America is exponentially better than virtually anywhere else in the world. we designed military service to a tool for upward social mobility during times of peace, and the most effective professional military to have ever existed in times of conflict.

People in the government have no right to enlist people in the military, this is coming from someone who willingly went in bc I WANTED to. Congress should be put on the front lines.
This is what we, as men, agreed to in exchange for the privilege to vote, which was previously only granted to property-holders (ie, someone with skin in the game). We didn't have the right to vote handed to us. We've had to fight and die for it. 'Others' have had the privilege handed to them and it's resulted in how bad our government is right now.
I don't think there would be enough to fill all the billets. You can't even count on new ones because they have been in office for so long, it would be an elderly military for sure.

While I agree that young people shouldn't be forced into active warfare, I do think it would be good for all physically able young people to go through at least some weeks of (not faked) boot camp to understand what the military means. Even if it's just a six-to-twelve-month service after HS graduation.

Have you ever heard of the G I Bill. Free college Loan to buy a house low interest payment free medical for yo and your wife and children for the rest of your life. If you do 20 yrs you get a nice pension. Go in at 18 retire at 28 you can still work another jod retire get a second pension if you're ambitious still another job retiree get a third pension plus your social security. My Uncle did 340air force everything I mentioned the man had money coming out his ears. I did 8 in the Marines used my GU bill got a loan bought my 1st house went to college good real estate lic life is good. Believe me,being jailed for draft refusal is a hell in its own right. They make sure it’s no better than actual living conditions in an active war zone. Plenty of conscientious objectors in Vietnam died in the conditions they they were kept in for refusing to go.

I deployed to Iraq at 19 (19D) and I say **** THE DRAFT. Men should not be forced to fight in any more bull**** wars for people who don't give a crap about us. We aren't fighting wars for our freedom, we're fighting it for mega-corporations.

I was threatened with jailtime when i turned 18 because i refused to sign the selective service card. That was back in 2010 and i pointed out how none of my female classmates had to forfeit their life to the government. To hell with the state
real shit its because the government can't afford to loose women the way they can afford to loose men. I know it sounds messed up. but thats what it is, they need women especially of that age group to provide children. Also men are physically stronger than women so it makes sense to send your strongest people to war. But in the end no one should be forced to fight.

I got my “failure to register for selective service” when I was in the Army, ironically addressed to my military unit and I panicked. I went to my First Sergeant and laughed while tossing it into the trash saying, “Private, you’re fine. If they send the MP’s after you give me a call.”
Reminds me of getting jury duty letter while I was at boot camp.
Or getting a new roof mailer while being a tenant in an apartment complex.

My school told us about this in our government classes and all senior boys were given literature about it so they would understand what it meant. They were encouraged to register at the post office to make sure that they didn't get penalized. My brother registered the day after his birthday because he started college at 17.
They did this because enlistments are now too low to meet anticipated needs.
And America has like seven wars on the horizon, none of which will be successful...

My medical history bars me from the draft. I'm 24, and I'm not even registered. I had a spinal fusion for scoliosis. I have a full range of motions and no physical restrictions, but the military doesn't want me.

@@logo050400 You should register even if you know you're ineligible, no one's been prosecuted for failing to register in a long time, but that changes if the draft actually gets used, and the military has been unable to meet its recruiting goals for years now. Even discounting the 250K fine and 5 years in prison if convicted, it has other serious long-term consequences that you want no part of.

Because this change doesn't actually change anything except preventing some people who were never told they had to register from potentially going to jail. Selective service on the other hand should absolutely be ended. It was a terrible idea that has never worked.

When I was growing up (born in 1960) and learning American history in school, I would often think of all of the Americans that died on battlefields so that I had my freedoms, including my freedom to object to a war. When I turned 18 I registered and kept my address updated until I turned 47 as required by law. I didn't want to go to war, but I'll be damed to have someone else die for my rights and not be prepared to do the same.
