Hi pete nice video the only thing is how do you feed the ground he is scything on ?
You dont have to convince me of the pride Maynards have in their trades and crafts,.. Thats why the wife and i when daughters out of school,.. she has already chose college and career,. Maine U, and a park ranger in the bar harbor island area,.. which awesomely enough,. Already have retirement home in Lincoln ville,,.. so,.. 6 MORE YEARS,,.. I WILL BE JOINING THE GOOD LIFE,,.🤙🤙🤙
But visit our maine home often,.. very often,..
"If a beaver had a backhoe we'd be in trouble." Excellent metaphor for what's happening with humanity.
Most (90%) have no clue whats happening with society and the world when they don't even know what a false flag event is (or why typing those 2 words might not allow my comment to post) and very little knowledge of history incl what happened only 20 years ago this Saturday. Willfully ignorant in the age of the computer, everybody has a library and yet are dumbed down as ever.
Idiocracy is turning into a documentary. People think complying with the bully is the answer...after all...its just 2 weeks right...not talking about Jim
And then there are the ones who get sucked down a rabbit hole of conspiracy theories, who can't discern what is real in the wash of misinformation. Don't ruin your life mate.
Best line yet from Jim!
@@meandillar69 You in Austraila m8t? Yeah eveything is just fking peachy there m8t LOL. TOTAL FKING TYRANNY. Oh never mind its just a pretend conspiracy and not actually happening! You keep telling yourself that! its for you SAFETY! Nothing says safety like military on the streets and getting beat up, locked up, harrased, fined etc! Pip pip cheerio!
@@meandillar69 My little brother ruined his life on conspiracy theories. Better to focus on the obvious conspiracies.
I love your message and using it more often on your videos ie, getting away from the conventional way of farming and back to the basics and working with and for, and not against our mother EARTH.
I got into scything by watching videos with Jim scything so effortlessly. Now I have 2 snaths, one from Scythe Supply and the other from Botan, along with 7 different blades. I even peen them myself now. People around here think that I'm nuts, but I can get more done with a scythe than they can with a weed trimmer. I'm also not covered with pieces of grass and weeds when I'm done. I used to even wear a face shield when weed trimming after I had a chunk of a weed stem go up my nose. That hurt.
Heck yeah you got the bug! The only crazy person here are those who don’t see the utility of this amazing tool! I like that my cat can hang out while I mow, and I can hear the birdsong instead of the rumble of a motor.
Thats awesome!!
What about slopes? I can do a pretty steep bank with a weed eater. People might think it’s a lot of work swinging that blade. Well, a weed eater isn’t exactly light. It also needs line, gas and doesn’t have the same lifespan.
@@przybyla420 Slopes aren't a problem. They've been using scythes in the Alps for centuries, and you don't get much steeper a slope than that!
Hmmm I need to get one and check it out
Therapeutic listening to Jim with the rhythmic sound of the scythe.
Thanks Pete and Jim.
This is the best channel for farming, pete gives you the picture on how urban/suburban areas can be transformed into providing food but also with the help of jim you get a great taste of homesteading and market gardening.
Thanks!!
i firmly believe that grass lawns need to be uprooted and replaced with gardens, front and back. If only HOAs and city ordinances would catch up, and maybe provide incentive for those who plant crop instead of turf, it would happen. For now i just make sure that every tree in my landscape is a nut or fruit tree, and plant all the useful space in my backyard with veg crops.
I'm a big fan of Jim, he is clearly a humble genius. Big hug for both!
I appreciate how in touch Jim is with his land. If there are ever any issues or problems, he will surely know, because he spends time with his land, closely observing and tending to it, which absolutely makes a difference. ~ 'Slow and steady wins the race'.
So true
Brock was one of the speakers at my PDC training in 2010. I agree; if we're here, we're supposed to be here. Our choices at this point are integral to our survival, now more than ever. Beautiful!
🙌
Jim is probably one of the most fit and patient people I see on CZcams. What a gift to be able to slow down and take care if self while taking care of the land.
Agreed!
Jim really has me considering getting a scythe. A regular mower isn't well suited for my yard and hard for me to maintain. I was using a push mower but the city put in some sod after rerouting some pipes and the push mower can't get traction to rotate the blades on the new sod. My weed eater broke, so for now I've been having to cut the lawn with a grass whip, which is a lot of work.
Not only for the vegetables but also for the goats this is so awesome.
He is so awesome.
Thanks so much Pete for taking us on the road trip to main. You're the best.
So peaceful and so enjoyable...thank you for sharing that with us Pete and Jim
Love the videos with you and Jim ! Every single time. Thank you, dear brothers 🙏
Love this channel
Jim is going to be the best no the world champion backpack kid dancer!
Love this guy 🙏🏼
I would bet $1,000,000 that the sound of the Scythe, ... whoooosh,.... whoooosh,.... whoooosh,.... over and over and over, in a pattern, mixed with the soft sounds of nature, birds chirping, distant animal calls,... has put him in a deep trance, and has something to do with Jim being "open" to ALL of the energy, sounds, and vibrations, around him. So,... it's very true when he says, "If you listen to the land".
listening to Jim scythe and ponder the meaning of life is like ASMR....
It looks faster than with my Stihl fs 450 and it's more environmental friendly and it exercises you too. I just have so much work on my farm and my other job too that I have to use the stihl 450. Nothing but respect for Jim, great and wise man.
Thank you very much.
Yes more of Jim.
I've only ever used grass as mulch and to start/feed my gardens. The mucky stuff underneath as it decomposes is rich food for your soil.
We will miss Jim in Florida, but we have family in Ocean Park, Maine! It’s a great state too!
Very cool!
Keep up the great work brother!
Thanks Pete!
Jim u the man brother!U should write your own book grass fed veggies
Pure gold
What a wonderful series with Jim. Really enjoying it, thank you!
Thanks Pete if not for you we'd miss Jim. A major inspiration for us. This unique journey Jim is living opens so much creative thinking and living! Much appreciated. Love the idea of scything reflections !
Love you guys
I love Jim so much. Thanks for bringing him into my life years ago! What a guy and a great example!
I could listen to Jim all day. Thanks again for sharing all this Pete. Think it’s time Jim sat down and write a book!
While out early morning scything I’ve sometimes wondered what it would be like if part of a politicians employment was to get up at dawn and scythe for an hour each day. What ideas they could come up with and reinforce their connection with everything on this wonderful planet.
I’m sure it’s not just me that’s solved many of the world’s problems on these early mornings. 😆
Please keep sharing about Jim. I love the questions you ask him. He is so knowledgeable.
Jim's view of humanity is refreshing. The idea that we're a part OF the ecosystem rather than apart FROM the ecosystem goes against the demoralizing notion that for the past twenty years has claimed humans are a parasite on the earth, that we shouldn't have children, and that the best thing we can do for the ecosystem is die. What a rotten thing to make people believe about themselves. Jim's a hopeful man though. He practices what he preaches and he shows people how to live well.
So true!
Good times!
We need to get Jim a camera to follow him on a daily basis. He has more gardening knowledge in his little finger than 90% of the so called CZcams homesteaders. Love seeing Jim even if it is only a glimpse during Pete’s trips up north.
This is so good boss
Some time ago, I went to Sepp Holzer's farm in the Austrian Alps and met him in person. One day, I want to meet Jim.
That's amazing! Maybe someday!
I love seeing how tuned in this gentleman is .
I would like more of this Scythe philosophy of the one straw revolution! I bought two scythes last month and heading down to Asturias Spain hopefully to do what Jim and Fukuoka have been doing for a while. Cheers for making these videos
Cheers!
I bought an old sythe made in England with a forged blade. It would be over a 100 years old. I have just bought a hay blade for it.
What I am most looking forward to is being out in the pasture cutting grass and just having peace and quiet, apart from the birds and cows.
So motivating, watching and listening to him.
Happy to be a ski.. 🤗 Watching Mr.Jim at his craft...
Great content. Thanks to both of you.
Thanks for the video. I can listen and watch Jim all day. :)
That's incredible, I've always wanted to learn how to use a scythe.
What kind of file does Jim use in the field to keep his scythe sharp?
A friend of mine says she has one from her grandfather I her basement. Anxious to see if it as a blade and is usable.
@@janew5351 it's a special file that sits in a container of water hooked to his belt.
@@janew5351 its not a file. Its a sharpening stone.
Wow Pete Jim is going to have ABS of STEEL! Nice Country Love It!
Love you guys! I'm headed out of FL. To the "Downeast" area this weekend. Can't wait! Thanks for the foggy inspiration.
Love these videos with Jim
Thanks Man!
thanks for sharing my friend
we always want to see Jim and you together my boy! keep poundin dirt! @PeteKanarisGreenDreamsTV
Epic
Wow amazing insights from a zen meditation scythe session!!
🙏
JIM!
Advancement in technology could be only a sign of human devolution ,if we look around what do we see? Thanks for showing something which makes sense.
Hi.. Jim!
I love what both you guys are doing! Gotta shorten up those food supply chains for sure.
The ancient Taoists labeled activity like this as "Walking meditation"
Jim is proof of concept of "Wu Wei" or the slow life movement, and how much can be accomplished by slowing down, and not trying to "accomplish" everything. Like energy, the truth is in the edge.
lol, I love Paradoxes!
It is so incredibly frustrating to me to read a historical (fiction) novel & they make a huge production of hand cutting hay, with like 10 people in a field, all day long.
Then i see jim getting multiple rows done in like 2 hours. & going off for the day.
I think people think this type of historical work was *so much harder* but maybe it wasnt?
people these days are not used to a normal level of work, this is normal work. its not hard. hard work is wrestling with multi-ton machine parts when the tractor breaks down and the mechanic cant get to you for a few weeks and you got crop in the field with a storm coming, so you gotta figure out how to fix it yourself.
Jim is a total luddite and it's awesome. I'm picking up some Linkola in this episode. If it wasn't for Pete, I would have no idea he existed.
for some reason his speaking cadence reminds me of Will Forte. Im inspired to get a scythe and feed my crops with grass too. thanks.
Cool! 😎 Scythe on!!
Great....
ketchup on Chanterelles? Ha love you guys
I sit down to Zen out with a Kovaleski sything vid, and the youtube adverts are for Stihl Robot lawnmowers. :)
Maynards are awesome🤙🤙🤙
reminds me of Bill Murray's character in Caddyshack as he's babbling working on the greens, LOL!
The only reason the tractor causes ruts and compacts the soil is because most farmers use tractors that are way too big because they are doing so many acres. If you use a small compact tractor with smaller implements and the tractor has a turf style tire, it is not doing the damage. What Jim is doing fits his needs, but it definitely won't solve world hunger.
If Jim was smart and got a small compact tractor and a few older basic implements (like I did) he could easily put up all of his hay needs for the gardens and animals which would give him huge amounts of time to work on his greenhouses and other projects that he doesn't have time for now.
I was looking for where Jim said he got his Scyth from. I’m looking to give it a try.
Sythe Supply in Maine. They are out of stock due to high demand, though. Just keep checking or maybe give them a call to be put on a waiting list? Not sure if they do that, but couldn't hurt to check.
Also try One Scythe Revolution
Pete where would be the best place to run into Jim and meet him? I’m in CT so FL probably out of range, and I would have went to the Common Ground Fair but just heard it was canceled. What do u recommend?
What’s growing on
Great video but .... so nervous Jim was going to nick Pete with the scythe!!! 😐
Pound dirt👊🏾
Pound Dirt! 👊
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
👊👊
100%👊
Wish this grass was for sale..
If you use it the wright way you are able to cut at least 2 feet at one’s (not 2 inches)
hi Jim, are there any 'weeds' in the grass that give you trouble later ?
He puts the grass on the garden green? I'm thinking about getting a scythe from Lehman's , is there a better one to get? The riding mower is not wanting to start again this year and the grass is getting tall, it was waist deep I think last year before I finally got the mower working so I could mow. Thanks Pete
Yes, green on the garden. The hay is dried out. Happy Scything!
What blade (brand and size) is he using for this?
Does Steiner mention a scythe?
A riding a stand on mower would be so much more efficient.
Lawn mowers have been invented ...
The way the mowers chop the grass it wouldn’t work for the way Jim bales the hay
But how can you text and scythe at the same time? I don't think we are a keystone species as much as we are an impact species. Humans can aspire to be a keystone species, but it requires thoughtful effort, not just natural inspiration. Our tendency is to be greedy and overly consumptive. Jim is doing good work.
I understand why Jim does what he does but there are small light weight harvesters that will do the job o much faster.
Scything works well for Jim. He’s not interested in using fuel-powered machines
You’ve sort of missed the point. Pete clearly mentioned almost breaking his leg due to the previous history of machinery running over the field. The idea is to keep it simple as possible so that he’s not reliant on outside factors, fuel/mechanics/other supply chains.
It’s called building resilience and one day unfortunately we’re all going to understand exactly what this means.
If a beaver had a back-hoe. I can't stop laughing lol
Bigfoot never bothers him because he is taking care of the land.
It's a form of meditation.
I have a messed up Thorasic spine with layers of bone spurs. I cringe when I watch you do that. I could do it once, then I would be crippled for weeks.
I have to wonder hiw long it takes Jim to go through a blade as often as he has to peen and sharpen.
du schwatzt mir zu viel beim Gras schneiden.
Tap that bell to stay Motified!
I love ya Jim. But the make a machine that does that in two seconds. Not worth it.
It works well for Jim
Again, you’re missing the point. Buying a machine makes you dependent on all sorts of outside factors, fuel, mechanics, parts. By simplifying it down to a scythe Jim is building resilience. Hasn’t COVID and our over reliance on supply chains taught us anything?
Isn't it interesting that you have a dude scything a field, spewing more wisdom and complex thought, than many people sitting at a desk, writing books and pretending to be smart.
Well said
