"Yank"is a shortened form of "Yankee" - as in New York Yankees. No one is really sure where the word Yankee came from. Some say a British general named James Wolfe used it first in 1758 when he was commanding some New England soldiers. In the UK the word Yankee means American, in America it tends to be the people from the northern States like New England and Vermont. The song "Yankee Doodle Dandy" was originally a British song and is now the State song of Connecticut I believe.

    • @sutty8526

During the Civil War, and even after the war came to an end, Yankee was a term used by Southerners to describe their rivals from the Union, or northern, side of the conflict. "Yank" is still used as a slur in the UK. I lived in England 3 years for what would have been middle school if I'd been in the US. Kids would sometimes call me "Yank" or "You bloody Yank" thinking they were really getting in a juicy verbal jab. I'm not sure they ever understood why it made me laugh every time.
It's just not insulting to us, since we self identify as yanks. Another one that cracked me up was the time a teacher called me a heathen. It's just so far removed from words we associate with insults today that it really tickled me.

It gave a backstory to this stage persona he's better known for. Once I got into it after a few watches it was one of the best and most underrated sitcoms I've seen. It dates from around the 1820's when American sailors could not understand why Royal Navy ships were shipping supplies of Citrus fruit aboard, to add to Rum rations ! They were mocked for this, until it was proven that the Vitamin C from the fruit had reduced Sailor's deaths from Scurvy, a fatal illness, from nearly 40% pa to less than 2%. Virtually all Navies adopted the practice by 1865, but the name stuck ....

Saw his latest tour "Gig for Victory" two weeks ago in Chatham. I'm also a massive fan of his 'We have ways' podcast. Wife not a fan as such, but I've never seen her laugh as much since our wedding night 15 years ago..!

You Americans call us Brits limeys, the name taken from the lime juice royal navy sailors drank every day to keep scurvy ( a skin disease that eventually caused the body to fall apart) away.scurvy is prevented by victim C , but in the days of sail no one knew what vitamins were, but during the first ever recorded medical trials the men given lemon or lime juice recovered from scurvy very quickly.BTW the German sailors didn't get scurvy without lime juice, they always carried sour cabbage on board which is full of vitamin C ...

Brilliant comedian, he created "the landlord" character pretty quickly to compere a show at the Edinburgh fringe festival.
I think the character describes a type of English male known as a "Gammon"... White, approaching middle age, patriotic but very stubborn and opinionated..
Oxford educated historian as others have mentioned...he pokes fun at our own idiosyncrasies as little islanders whole berating the other countries... If we poke fun at you, we like you... If we ignore you completely be worried. 😊

The historical points he brings up eg Germany losing colonies post WW1 are things most of us with a History degree that covered a wide area would know.
He is also well read on history generally like a lot of historians and lovers of history.

I think the amounts of serious comments left by Septics showed how touchy most are. I love the US, lived there for a few years with my veteran Brothers in Arms. They get the British sense of humour as I introduced them to Blackadder, etc.
