Al Murray's pub landlord is a character, in real life he's an oxford graduate in history. His pub landlord persona is a bit of a cliche exaggeration of what a common immage of pub landlords used to be, that really does not exist much anymore. The skit of Brittain vs US is very funny where typically a lot of Americans take offence but miss entirely that he's equally roasting his own country.
As an American I was laughing my ass off!
@@Chris-ji4iu Well, most miss the "we invented gravity" and, especially, "no point when you're on your own". Then again, not really really typically American....Aaaanywhooo, Bhaskaracharya would've been difficult for anyone wouldn't it.
The usual 'he's actually an oxford educated liberal' apology that follows every Al Murray reaction, god forbid anybody takes him seriously
@@okmickey232 Why would you need to take him seriously, he's a comedian, tells jokes. It's not like he is the new George Carlin. He's just a funny guy.
@@voiceover2191 Well that is my point? You made the apology for his character, like someone ALWAYS does on any of his pub landlord videos on you tube. 'He's not really right wing' 'He's actually very intelligent, Oxford educated' As if we can only laugh at him once we know he doesn't really have those views, and we have your permission.
A friend of mine went to see this show and she shouted out 'Switzerland', to which Al replied, 'who guards the Pope? The Swiss Guard. Who told the pope to fuck off? Henry VIII. So we beat them too'
Fun fact, Swiss mercenaries were highly regarded since the middle ages.
Thank you for sharing that. ❤
That is funny because Vatican City (aka The Holy See), whom the Swiss Guard serve, is one of those 22 countries Britain has never invited.
@@ivankawnartist Britain came close to defeating the Viet Mihn before control was handed back to the French. See 'Britain's Vietnam War' by Mark Felton; he does great videos on many unknown military subjects.

Al has a degree in history from Oxford University and, as others have commented, he's an extremely intelligent man. The Pub Landlord is an overly patriotic character, who while taking the piss out of other countries, also takes the piss out of the UK. It's great to watch somebody as well informed as you, react to British comedians - you "get" British humour 😁😁👍
I was even more impressed that you knew Burkina Faso was given to the French, not the UK. Most people have never even heard of the place, which Al obviously knew, and could use it for comedic effect - "I refer you to my previous answer" 😂
Al's dad was the colonel of a parachute unit in the British Army, he talks with a generic Brit squaddie accent in the guise as the pub landlord. he's a smart cookie.
His piece on how global finance works is one of the funniest things I've ever seen.
Not only do you get great comedy, but also a history lesson -job done!!
The pub landlord is an amazing character. Al Murray himself is unbelievably intelligent. His humour is extremely clever.
He is playing the character (the pub landlord) however his Oxford history degree shows, in both in his stage character and also in his excellent 'Road to Berlin' documentary, which is a great documentary which describes what happened after D Day until VE day
Yessss. The pub landlord. A personal favourite of mine. He's hilarious and totally brillaint. Very intelligent. His stuff on britain being the middle of the earth is great
Northumbrian here, North of Newcastle but similar accent so glad to hear you find it the best! Al is such a wonderful comedian and I would have to recommend his Nations of the World video, alongside his British Accents as the Geordie is spot on
Thanks for the video and hello from Newcastle!
I was born near Newcastle, so hello back!
This is a good skit, with a great deal of knowledge behind it - have a degree in history, but adding the humour in with it is a great skill.
@@terenceingledew1891 London has gone well and truly mad but it's mostly the same old toon with a few new buildings
@@Oxley016 it’s a shit hole here
@@Oxley016 London's nothing like it was just in my lifetime people who grew up the same area as me don't even have the same accent anymore I'm from Peckham and can't tell you the last time I heard someone talk like me it's dat nu Ali G speech ting
Up the Toon ⚫️⚪️
I've just discovered your channel and I love hearing someone who knows their stuff, and reacts to historic content.
Great comedian, exactly the standard I would expect from someone with such a glorious name!!!
Really appreciate you putting out your videos. I look forward to yours all the time.
Hey, I’m glad! Thanks for watching James (:
@@NoProtocol oh, you’re welcome. Straight to the point in love it.
Love your observations, very astute. Al Murray's accent is naturally 'received pronunciation' hailing from Oxfordshire, though for the Pub Landlord character he appropriates an East London/Essex Cockney accent like Warren Mitchell does in 'Till Death us do Part' which I think you might find amusing. Also love the Geordie accent, though I'm from London, and the Welsh. They both sing, as does the Scottish Lowlands.
I remember seeing 2 vids of his: 1)When he came to Australia and proceeded to make a joke about every Prime Minister we have starting with the current one, then working his way back thru history! Blew everyone away!
and 2) a vid where he proceeds to prove EVERY culture has their own version of the name John!
Lovely. Always feel a bit smarter after watchin your videos. Keep up the nice work 💐
Came for Murray, stayed for that smile.
Geordie (Newcastle) here - absolutely love Al Murray, it's always great seeing people's reaction when discovering his character.
Another fellow Geordie and fellow fan of big Al, not to be confused with Newcastle own big Al
You may be impressed as a literature fan to hear Al Murray is a descendant of William Thackeray
You totally understand British humour, your explanation hits the nail on the head!
Very impressed by your presentation!
I loved ur Al Murray reaction, he does know his history.
Hiya. His character is the pub landlord. British comedians tend to come from a background of higher education. He's well into his history and also made some WW2 documentaries and stuff like that. He has lots of great content for you to watch. 🤠
I am from Newcastle and I agree, it is the best accent. You have good taste. Great video.
There is a book by Stuart Laycock; All the Countries We've Ever Invaded: And the Few We Never Got Round To. It's in my long long reading list.
I was just going to mention this one. I read it a few years ago, would definitely recommend it
He is playing a character but he is a highly intelligent bloke that loves his history. But well done for giving this a go. Happy holidays!!!
Quite right. BF (Upper Volta) was a French colony gaining independence 1960.
I learnt most of what I know about the British Empire (not much) from the Flashman series of books by George MacDonald Fraser. An entertaining mix of fiction woven into Victorian imperial history.
He was a bit off about Norway. Vikings settled Normandy, became Frenchified, and conquered England in 1066. So by extension, Britain is a Viking colony.
Every Brit is secretly pining for the fjords.
Conquered England .... not Britain . They are not one and the same
As a born and bred Geordie, gotta say I love the way you say Newcastle :)
First time I saw this channel I realised this is an intelligent girl. Nothing I’ve seen since has changed my opinion. I love watching intelligent people reacting to stuff on CZcams. I’m thick as shit in the neck of a bottle, and I appreciate clever people, and she is definitely that.
The perfect woman! Beautiful, intelligent with a great sense of humour. Thanks for your great comments.
Wow i think you have the biggest smile i have ever seen! Historic in my book! Subbed along with the other minions.
People from Newcastle are called Geordies and that is their accent. Depending who you ask it comes from the fact that local miners instead of using the Davey safety lantern used George Stephenson's version invented in 1815.
truly one of the best short intros ive ever seen
Your smile is magical. Another great video
Great review, really enjoyed it. Al Murray is great, you should look up more of his video's. If you like sharp witted Brits, there is a young man from Manchester UK, who is now living in the states, he does a free style Rap show, Rap isn't really my thing, but he is very intelligent, very quick witted and well worth a watch, his name is Chris Turner and he is very good.
Been binging her vids since I came across the channel immediate sub especially for the philosophy videos nice to see someone reacting to them and giving thier own input
Thank you for this channel, I have think it will do well
Love the fact that you just got on with the reaction straight away! Great reaction and choice of video. Love my country (UK) and Al Murray!
Thats every reaction of her, no wasted time. Its wonder, shes wonderful. Look into more of her reactions.
The Pub Landlord character that he's playing is a boorish little Englander type who is intensely patriotic and a know-it-all. He's a very well liked comedian over here by both those who enjoy the satire and those who don't realise it's satire and think he "tells it like it is".
You are pure good vibes!
I'm with you.....the geordie/newcastle accent is the best. That for me deserves a subscription 100%
As many have referred to. The Pub Landlord is a character for comedy. Al extremely knowledgeable in history. He uses history in a comic way 👍
Best intro on CZcams!! Hands down
Oh hey, I'm from Newcastle - and for that, I'll subscribe 😅
it's always great when you can understand the twit, most times you can't , he's so British .
straight to it/ subscribed
So much Al Murray to watch, nations of the world is worth watching
He is playing the "Pub Landlord"
On Al Murrays own youtube channel there are both of his series of a show called Time Gentlemen Please (from around the year 2000), that is based off his character. worth watching too :)
I’ll have to get into more from him!
I couldn't like "Time Gentlemen Please" -- Murray is a comedian, not an actor, and he works best when he's interacting with an audience. In TGP he was just delivering lines and then waiting for the laugh, and it didn't suit his style, IMHO.
BTW, there's a YT video of him giving a talk to students at his old Oxford college, St Edmund Hall, in which you get some interesting snippets about his life. Worth searching out!
Absolutely brilliant historian ……. I’m from Newcastle 😁😁😁😁😁😁
He's good. Fast, and intelligent =)
I liked it as well!
Loved this reaction. I think you’d love the Jeremy Clarkson Victoria Cross doc (c 1hr) 👍
"haven't heard from them since..." lolol love it lol
I'm From sweden and do appreciate british humor. This character of his never was my cup of tea so I thought I don't like Als style. Then he appeared on Taskmaster and that season is the best because of him. He thinks totally out of the box. And now he has a great podcast with the historian James Holland, "ways to make you talk" i think it's called, about Ww2 which is really relaxed and good with great guests. You shouldn't judge on first impression. And I think sweden is one of the few countries britain never attacked.
And to be honest... Taskmaster isn't that much about education. It's more about finding a solution in a way that's almost cheating when it's the most fun. But hey, we all think different.
He's from a small village in Buckinghamshire between Aylesbury and Milton Keynes
You are correct, Burkina Faso was never a German colony. Neither was Uganda.
their is a longer version I think you should look for the longer version too
I LIVE for this kind of content. What a great piece. This is why I love Eddie Izzard so much, their history pieces especially.

So those pronouns are really a thing now? I'm not from US nor UK, so I don't know...
Great reaction as always you must really react to Al Murray how global finance works probably one of his best
He’s quick.
Just found your channel today, love your content list so far. Btw, you have an amazing smile 😁
Where are you from? I can't place your accent 🤔
Part comedy routine and part Al Murray flexing his historical knowledge.
Definitely context from watching them all x
Born in Buckinghamshire to Lt Colonel Ingram Murray and his wife Juliet Ritchie, Alastair James Hay Murray graduated with a degree in history from Oxford. There he also performed with elite comedy group, the Oxford Revue.
Murray was awarded an honorary degree (Hon MA) by the University of Bedfordshire in 2014, and an honorary Doctor of Social Science (PhD) by the University of Wolverhampton in 2017.
Hi I'm new to your channel, really like it, you also seem much more highly educated than many people doing this kind of stuff. Looking forward to more 👍
That's a great picture you have behind you, I've only just noticed it. It looks like Hendrix, Holly, Presley, Lennon, I don't know the guy far right, I'm guessing it could be Morrison (The Doors). I'm guessing the audience are dead stars too because I see Bob, is the woman Joplin? I've no clue who the others are, I love pictures like this.
You earned a sub just by saying you love our accents (Geordies)
he is a very knowledgeable man as well as funny
You have to watch his explanation of global finance. It’s his best! It’s a on stage character he plays.
Best start ever
For a humorous take on History, the kids' show 'Horrible Histories' was great. Al (when he isn't The Pub Landlord) has done some WW2 Documentaries too. Not him, but if you look on YT for 'The Battle of Bamber Bridge' it might shock you...
I like your channel. Respect.
Yes the Geordie (Newcastle) accent is the best. You are correct.
Brilliant 🙂
Hi from Newcastle! 😂Proud Geordie!
Do you have a link to a list of all your literary recommendations?
Holy shit!!! not only a Pub landlord... but a brilliant landlord
Wow brains and beauty, you are a knowledgeable young lady.
Good stuff.
I'm from Newcastle, thanks pet
Comedian Genius!!!
Hi, CZcams recommended me here, I have to say i'm glad it did.
I especially love your intro's to your videos!
Hope to see more people subscribe to you!
Burkina Faso/Upper Volta was French; he was thinking of Togo or Kamerun in that part of the world perhaps?
For those that are old enough to remember, this guy reminds me of Cliff the mailman from the TV show Cheers.
I could be wrong but as far as my knowledge goes we English/British have never been at war with Portugal.
I love this guy.
Loving your videos! I think you should try reacting to some Jimmy Carr, either “rude jokes” or his “audience heckle” 😎 we have the best comedians 🇬🇧
Good reaction.
Another great reaction. Check out Al's Nations Of The World skit for something similar but longer.
Brilliant intro 😂❤
New sub from Manchester England
Had to google it since you're the first reactor I've seen to mention it and fair play he did screw up with Burkina Faso, it was a French colony not German.
You will enjoy Scratch's from The Two Ronnie's , Mastermind and Fork handles
Hey I watched you react to a number of topics covered in comedy including history, geography, politics and religion but I have never seen anything on sport. I highly recommend a well known Irish comedian called Tommy Tiernan he does a great sketch entitled 'The drug Oplympics' where he takes the piss out of Irish sport. Even if you don't do a video on it check it out if you have the time. Tommy is a national treasure we love him.
Geordie here, surprised you said Newcastle. :D
He’s from Chiswick london
Man when I heard 'my favourite accent from the UK has to be from...' I 100% did not expect it to be where I'm from hahaha. Glad someone appreciates us
Someone has to
He knows his stuff
Al is from London, Hammersmith to be exact.
