Thanks for this, I'm a complete novice and thinking of buying my first used caravan, so I'm definitely doing my research before I buy. This video gives newbies like me a good idea of the signs to watch out for especially internally. I trust my nose to try and detect that initial 'earthy' damp smell but as some some patches can be small this isn't always noticeable.

We brought a brand New 2008 Bailey Ranger 540/6 caravan, It was are pride and joy at just under £13,000 we had it well looked after but damp started to show after 1 year around all the windows this was done under warranty, but Bailey made it very hard and where not helpful at all. The damp just kept coming in different places in the caravan which where fixed but then it would show some were else so we got rid of it in 2015 we only got £1300 back. I WOULD NEVER BUY ANOTHER BAILEY CARAVAN

I bought a Bailey Senator 5 Wyoming and it is a beautiful caravan but suffer exactly from the symptoms you have shown here, both in the bathroom above the toilet and around the front windows. It isn't a major problem for me but I am going to have to tackle it at some point. You video highlighting Bailey issues was informative and invaluable. You are just up the road from me, here in Durham so I may well call in one day to peruse your stock. Anyway, I have subscribed so keep the vids coming and buy a foam pad for you mic! :)

I bought a 1993 Bailey years ago, loads of damp but it was an amazing van. I’ve just bought a 2002 Bailey and I think this was before they had the damp issue as it’s pre Allu-tech.

I have to totally agree with you. I/we repair damp vans and regularly get asked to quote. Customers don't understand why they are looking at around £2-3000 depending on the amount of damp it has. I tell them the same thing that it's so lobour intensive and can take weeks of work stripping and rebuilding without the cost of materials.

  • @broggiemonstermonster3385

I have a ranger with this problem. I have it covered at the moment while I find time to fix it....I did the cracks in the plastic already, it had no real damp in it, but when I uncovered it this year for a few weeks it got damp in the corner, about the size of my hand, covered it again quickly, obviously its got no worse as a result of the timely covering up and damp checks leading to the discovery. I use a pinless damp meter, not 100% accurate for sure at the price, but it does at least tell you where it is. But as you'll know you do have to have some idea about how caravans are built to rule out false positives caused by fixings and wiring inside the walls etc. I'm guessing the biggest problem with resealing the roof straps is work that's been done in the past and the possibility of chewed up screw heads.....

I use two pieces of copper wire ,to scan the van , without touching anything ,same way of traceing water pipes underground.

I've ended up working in a remote location and Living in a Bayley Senator caravan.
when I first moved it up here we found a leak in a roof on the first night. My father and I thought we had it sorted but we've found other leaks which is rather frustraiting. I hadn't realised it was such a common problem

Great video, very informative. You mention this was a problem mid 2000's, was it resolved by the time 2009 vans came out? I am hoping to see a 2009 van soon and would love to know if it was rectififed by 2009.
    Cheers.

Any one thinking of buying a Bailey Caravan should look at the factory tour on CZcams the alu-tech system and the way the side walls are made they are so flimsy it is beyond belief they also use the AL-KO chassis members with no torsional rigidity whatsoever, the body of those caravans is flexing all the time they are on the move and that is why they all leak, what amazes me is they don't disintegrate at the fist bump in the road.

I’ve had a 2007 Bailey Senator Vermont for 7 years and yes it has water ingress , I was looking to change and as we love the Bailey have looked at over a dozen, every one has the same issues, it is well known that they all leak, and it’s a manufacturing defect, considering the extent of this issue, has no one taken Bailey to task and sued them? Seems like a potential Diesel-gate on the Horizon 😢

    Realistically
If you're buying a caravan for a few grand, does it matter?
    Genuine question
How long would it take for thr van to become unusable?
    Do people live with it?
Seal up the points that weather is getting in and put with it, is that advisable on a cheap van?

  • @cubatime72
    @cubatime72 Před rokem

Ok, im going to ask an honest question?
Been looking for a new van for a while now, and see so many dealers asking top money for Leaky Lunars and Elddis solid range, now everyone know these vans are a no no . Why are dealers still asking top money for them?
My guess is, they buy them cheap, slap a tube of sealer around then sell them on making massive profit. Am i wrong?

you'd think after all these years they'd have better construction techniques - water should not be getting in to caravans - i have one of those roof spoilers on my 96 conniseur , a whole lot of screws to hold it on , which means a whole lot of holes and potential problems not even talking about the join line where it meets the roof
