Incredible really. I have a 1990 silver line nova. It’s solid as a rock all over. When caravans were built to quality not to a price.👍 we love it.

I have put in an order for a Bailey Discovery D4-2 which I hope will reach me here in Japan by next summer. I still have time to cancel my order, but despite this valuable information, I will not. Here are my reasons why and also, why this is a good video.
    1) Japan for the most part, has very hot and humid summers. We also have a rainy season in June/July and rainfall here can be very intense as we have just witnessed this week. 800mm rainfall in a few days.
    2) The intense summer heat and the very severe winters with heavy snowfall plays havoc with road quality. Consequently, Japan therefore does not use 'cat's eyes' in the road as it would be futile.
    3) I live 200 metres from the beach....
The background above combined, suggested to me that the stronger Alu-tech bodies have a better chance of long-term survival in this particular climate than most others. I don't recall Bailey stating that they had "solved the water ingress problem", but certainly did make claims to have greatly reduced it and certainly the caravans are comparatively strong.
The video is good because it does point out the weaknesses and that allows me and others to consider ways in which to protect the underside when it does finally land in Japan/or collected from your local dealership.
Sorry for the long comment, but I think that a detailed response is warranted so that newcomers are not put off unnecessarily. In fairness, Caravan Source did try to allay fears, but perhaps not quite enough. Caravanning is ALWAYS going to be a compromise and the vehicle itself from whichever maker is already compromised by the nature of the beast. Not even agricultural trailers last forever, although the family farm has a tipper trailer made from wood that is over a 100 years old and used to be pulled by horses. Sump oil is what has preserved that!

We purchased a Bailey, as new. It has never passed the service for damp\water egress :( We had a 5 year warranty plan with the service, so we didn't pick up the bills. The Caravan, has never left the site and done just a couple of miles from storage to pitch. Such as life.

I don't know the specification of the floor wood they use but would have thought they would specify "marine ply" and give it a few coats of yacht varnish. Generally does the trick for boats.

Hi I have just bought a 2012 bailey unicorn and found damp in 1 corner and fixed it a very simple solution . The main cause of damp in the corners is a very fundamental flaw that nobody has seemed to have notice . The bottom skirt track goes behind the corner skirt instead of having a stopend, this allows water to run behind the skirt into the corner and hence a wet corner. Simple fix seal the track with silicon at each corner just before it goes behind the skirt.

    • @CaravanSource
      @CaravanSource  Před rokem

Blocking the bottom of the track up with silicone I believe isn't a good way to fix it. Causes other problems.

The track acts like a gutter and direct the water along which ever way the van is tilted

Hi ,a very interesting vlog ,,I was thinking of changing our caravan for a Bailey brindisi or Vigo 2015/16 because I love the large window in front and as you say the lay out is nicely set out compared to so rivals. I know that water ingress still seams to be a problem with all makes but was hoping bailey got it about right as you see a lot of them so you would think that they wouldn't have to many problems. ....so I guess what I'm asking is would this put you off? as I've had the stress of panels cracking etc in the past and could do without the hassle .pls advise cheers

I'm so glad we didn't buy a bailey.
We were on holiday a few weeks ago and heard a horror story about a brand new bailey model it was a 2023 model and bailey didn't want to honor the warranty .
The owners were fobbed off with excuses until bailey finally gave them a new van.
We have a 17 year old swift challenger 530.
    I love it totally .
She might be old , but also problem free everything works and she's damp free , just has a yearly service done .
The missus loves the unicorn maybe one day, or I love the lunar clubman si.
To me that van ticks every box

TBF Bailey never claimed that they had solved the damp problem completely when they introduced Alutec but they removed timber from the wall and roof structures which could rot when damp and reduced the number of roof joints that could potentially seep water.

The problem is the trim around bottom it only there for looks. pull it off reseal the gaps under there I'm gonna use eternabond tape put trim back on run a bead of sealant if wanted along top of trim edge. also check wheel arch water runs down on the top inside of wheel arch cover seeping down into the floor due to manufacturers not applying sealant properly.

I thought the reason for the floors rotting on the alu techs was the condensation dripping down the inner walls on to the floor because the sides had been put on top of the floor ? Please correct me if im wrong.

hya jonathon , a quick question on the damp wood underneath a van . ive got a very small piece of soft wood undeath my pageant it was caused by bad design and water dripping off the back corner and awning rail , ive sorted that now buy fitting a aluminium piece to keep water off the floor this works 100%. but i'm going to cut it out and replace it , do you have to remove the plastic side trims to replace a small piece of lower floor or can it be done without removing the trims? thanks glenn

Thanks for the video...keep it up. Just went to look at a 2011 Lunar Quasar 525 and found the rear corners were damp. Looked fine inside, I think it's a lack of a rain drip at the bottom of the back wall, water is running down a soaking the ply. Have you had any experience of this?

Wish I had known this before buying our 2013 Cartagena... Right front corner soaked. Bailey not interested. I agree, why spend all the money designing a damp free caravan to go and put a wooden floor made of ply underneath?
