- Iain takes to the skies and the road to bring us the latest Tyrrell's Classic Workshop video from California. He meets with the Zampolli family and discovers the amazing and extremely rare Cizeta V16T designed by Marcello Gandini and developed by Claudio Zampolli with music industry supremo Giorgio Moroder - initially as the Cizeta-Moroder V16T.
You may not recognise the name of this monster supercar from the late 1980's but you might recognise the styling, since it has some similarities with the Lamborghini Diablo that appeared a few years later and came from the hand of none other than Marcello Gandini. Join Iain to find out more and is there a possible revival in the future?
PLEASE NOTE
The video and audio quality is not up to the usual standards of the channel. Iain's usual crew didn't travel with him and unfortunately there were some problems with the focus and audio quality. We've tried very hard to clean things up but we hope you can look past that and will enjoy the very special content anyway.

I’d like to give a round of applause for Bob. The guy knows his stuff and was dedicated to the cause. Seems like a talented and stand up guy
What's Bob's last name? How to reach him?
I used to work for Mr. Claudio, I was 16… I’m 20 now. I would go and help him work on other cars he was restoring at his shop in Santa Ana, like his Alfa Romeo and a Mitsubishi that I scraped bad😅not only help him with his cars but also his everyday tasks, he was old and tired so I’m glad he’s resting now. 4 years later and I still remember the first $500 he gave me, after that I knew I wanted to make an honest living forever. This video of his shop is bringing back so many memories. Grumpy old man… Rest in Peace❤🖤
So interesting to hear your story. Thanks!
I remember the spread in one of the car magazines in the late 80s about the Cizeta. The plug-line at the time was that Zampolli was the "mechanic of the stars" because he worked on a lot of celebrity Italian cars. A related story goes that Zampolli was the reason singer Sammy Hagar eventually joined Van Halen. They both had Zampolli as a mechanic. Sammy for his Ferrari and Edward Van Halen for his Miura. Zampolli heard that Edward was fishing around for a new replacement singer and suggested that Edward and Sammy meet since they were both in the music business and had a love for exotic cars. They did and the rest is history. Both Sammy and Edward told this story so it's true. Pretty cool rock and roll history tied to Zampolli.
I CAN'T DRIVE 55 :).
I've never heard anyone call Eddie Van Halen, Edward. Just too funny!
Oh that was this guy. Nice!
@@williambremner9022 He preferred the name Edward. He didn't mind "Eddie" but if you listen to interviews of people who were close to him, they either called him Ed or Edward. Eddie was a fan nickname that he put up with.
@@racer98 Yeah. The Ferrari Boxer from the video was the same one Sammy had serviced with Claudio. 🙂
With content like this, it could have been filmed in black and white and I'd still say it was fantastic. Zero apologies needed Iain, this was pure gold! Wow!
Totally agree
Yeah this video and audio quality is above the average standard of CZcams, even if not up to Tyrrell standard!
Probably only 20-30,000 car nut videographers in LA who would love the opportunity to work with Iain!
Was brilliant! Wow. Would Jay Leno be interested?
What a machine wow excellent work guys love the channel some fantastic machines just wow
I can't thank you enough for taking us along with you. What a trip, what an honour for you. Your face as you progressed and saw more and learnt more. This is historic.
Hope you get a funder. I mean that engine alone makes those 4/5 cars worth building. Amazing piece of kit. Thanks for sharing His work with the world for those of us who can afford such thinga

Ofcourse they call Mr Tyrrell, to get a handle on an exotic car factory. I haven´t seeen him as giddy before. What a gem of content!
I met Mr. Zampoli with this very car around 2007 at Car's & Coffee" in Irvine CA. I was parked next to him in my wee Ariel Atom. We chatted at some length about his efforts to get the car legal in the US and I got the grand tour of the car and his design ideas. I had never heard of him at that time but remember him well as he was so enthusiastic and of course the specs and size of this car was off the charts. I also watched another of your episodes with the Urraco that brought back memories of me as an 8 year old (50 years ago) walking to school back in Scotland. There was a Urraco parked in a garden and the story was the son of the homeowner was killed in some accident. I watched that Urraco every day for years slowly deteriorate on my way to and from school, my nose pressed between the fence slats trying to see it closer. I used to dream about buying it and fixing it. Then one day it was gone. I've never forgot that car! Thanks for the memories:) and a Great video!
I remember falling love with these when I first saw them in a car magazine in the 80’s.
As far as I understand it, the Cizeta was actually very close to the original design for the Diablo back in 1985. Gandini had done the original design, but new Chrysler management decided it was too “Wild” and “80’s” to appeal to the masses, so Project 132 (Diablo pre-production nomenclature) was smoothed out and cleaned up into what we saw in 1990. The Cizeta ended up being Gandini’s original take on what the Diablo should have looked like had his design processes been completed at Lamborghini (he left in a fit after his original designs were smoothed out).
The Cizeta is very cool and the story behind it is even cooler! Thanks for sharing with us this wonderful video!
Wow, you’ve really surpassed yourself with this one. I mean, the Cizeta V16 is almost mythical. I had no idea they built more than a couple and you are walking around four or five of them in different states after all these years! I really hope you get to complete one so we can all hear it running on your test route 👍😊
Hi Lain, I have built and presented the car with Claudio from the beginning, and I wish to thank you for this video, which is probably the best I have seen in a while, talking about true things and not one of the many fakes that I have seen around during the years. Thanks again, and a big hug to Elizabeth and Xenia, that I am missing a lot.
Thank you for your kind comments. I have heard your name mentioned by Bob and the girls. Would be great to talk!
Oh man. I was hit by the big O word. The Cizeta was one of the biggest day dreams I had as a teenager and the V16 really intrigued me along with the stunning design of Mr. Gandini.
Feels like those videos where they discover a new chamber in the great pyramid.
Brilliant but the 365GTC4 targa 'rental' also deserves a series of its' own
Mr. Tyrell, hi from Greece.Because of my age (53 yo) this supercar in 80s-90s magazines, was a dream for any young man who likes the strange ideas of technical pioneers. What a suprising and historical video, thank you very much, many thanks to Zampolli family who share this moments!
It's beautiful to see that Olivier and Iain go to the same hair dealership.
Years ago I met Zampoli and have seen this specific car on a few occasions--he would show it at the Beverly Hills Concourse and I think it was on display at the Petersen Automotive Museum as well. As one could imagine, it has undeniable presence.
Sensational! Giorgio Moroder composed the soundtrack for the movie Scarface. This is car displays the power of the 1980's.
And Midnight Express
Donna Summer records American Gigolo & Superman 3.
Those Sun engine analyzers really bring back great memories!
Those were the days! How about distributor tuning stands, remember those?
... a true joy it was to watch this one. I must say, it was a pleasure to make your acquaintance when you were in California, Iain. I hope you enjoyed the Vietnamese food lunch (and the extra salad dressing.) It was an honor to hear Bob tell the first-hand story of Claudio, the black Ferrari, California Highway Patrol, and Sammy Hagar. A moment I will never forget!
Iconic engineering. He used all the best people and materials to fulfill his dream. No other car was such an exclusive masterpiece. R.I.P Claudio Zampolli.
He used all the best people, so good they all were at their jobs that not a single running example ever existed.
Truly amazing.
The sound/video was just fine.
BTW - I kept expecting Jay Leno to walk in with his checkbook!👍
Please someone step forward to preserve this fabulous car.
I'm gonna win the lottery tomorrow night, think I know now how I'm gonna spend it haha.
The focus and sound are fine. As my late father would often say, never apologize, never explain.
What a treat! Thank you Iain for showing us all this, it must have been an incredibly emotional moment. Looking forward to hearing more news about the project's future!
No worries over the video and audio, opportunities like this do not come very often.
What a treat! There simply aren't enough adjectives for a workshop and collection like that. I was far too blown away by the content to notice any video or audio quality concerns.
Never seen Iain so happy, his flabber was well and truly gasted!
The Cizeta V16T is THE dreamcar of my childhood, it is beauty, fast, powerful and rare as rare as can be!
OMG yes, I've been hoping he could show us around a Cizeta! What a treat - thank you, Iain!
What a riveting video ; I couldn't quite believe what I was seeing !
Thank you so much Iain for taking us along with you !
The Cizeta is a mythical icon and I felt so privileged to be a fly on the wall during this visit of discovery.
It'll be so interesting to see how this fascinating project develops !
Great comments!
wow never thought I will see a Cizeta review!
I can’t believe there isn’t someone out there that wouldn’t want to take this on as a going concern, as something they can develop and refine.
I think that unless it was taken on by a large-ish auto manufacturer, the attempt would be very expensive and would pretty quickly drive the average company bankrupt. Sad to say, but history is full of small companies that either failed or were bought by larger conglomerates. Still, nice to dream, right? :)
@@aussiechris5904 certainly, it would be an ‘ominous’ undertaking, BUT unlike a lot of these supercar startups, this has a pretty good head start! That said, I’m no expert, or businessman. I do hope that someone can at least complete the cars there?

I do remember the Cizeta appearing in magazines in period; ‘Car’ being one I think. I’m sure the likes of LJK Setright would have revelled in the engineering (and had his own thoughts no doubt about whether it was a good or bad thing!) It may well have purported to be the fastest road car at the time. I’ll have to see if I still have a magazine in my collection. There was also another American built supercar at the time; the Vector if anyone remembers that? No need to worry about the quality Iain btw. It’s a privilege to see content like this and good of all involved to allow it to be shown publicly.

I remember being blown away by the CM back in the day. Would be nice if it survived as a boutique manufacturer. This was a story similar to köenigsegg, minus the success. I was also aware this was the first draft of the diablo design.

An engineering marvel you could spend alive time to absorb it
Just wow! If anyone can and should be involved in getting this project going it is Iain. Can't wait to see a follow up to this story.
Very interesting indeed. Thank you so much for filling in a few more blanks in my automotive history memory. I completely forgot about the audio/video issues you prefaced - I was captivated by the sheer genius of Claudio Zampolli and the quality of engineering that went into the V16. I do not envy you trying to come up with a viable plan for this project, but whoever puts their hand in their pocket will likely be someone who loves beautiful cars more than profit.
I saw a running one of these on the canepa CZcams channel.
It was a white car l think , and it drove the sound was glorious.
Read all about it originally in CAR and they had even interviewed Giorgio Morodor as well .
It was an amazing article.
Write a book on it please, or I'll help you out write it.
Interview the family, 'Bob' yourself and any one that knew the ingenerie Cizeta.
If even Tyrrell’s jaw drops like this, a man who has worked on every imaginable exotic car, that pretty much says it all.
I never liked the over the top styling of it, and I thought the 16 cylinder set up was a typical 80s show off thing. This video actually made me appreciate them for their technology and how much of an achievement this has been to get a working example, let alone multiple ones.
I think I speak for most of the group when I say we’re geeking out over this video as much as you did. Thanks for bringing us alongside.
Good evening Mr Tyrrell
Thoroughly enjoy Your videos and enjoy this video. Very interesting to hear about him in the introduction. And your wealth of knowledge is incredible Hope you have a brilliant week this week. Thank you again for all your hard work
Tristan.
Dear Iain we owe you a great many thanks for the privilege to watch this video and admire this magnificent masterpiece of automotive Italian engineering. Oh dear God, what a brilliant idea of combining 2 90 degrees v8s and driving the motion of the engine in the middle of the engine! Now days modern technology may be in the 21rst electronic & computerized century era, but I think that brilliant engineers like Claudio or designers like Marcelo so passionate with their "art" seem to extinct in our times. The only thing that this video's lacking is the music soundtrack of cams and valves that this magnificent engine sings. Think that it would sound like an Italian automotive opera. Once again many many thanks. Consider myself blessed to watch you!
what Claudio Zampolli did is something out of this world....
Cizeta is my favorite supercar ever!
Tyrrell can build the remaining cars if someone can manufacture the parts and do the testing. Then they can be sold to museums and Saud. Job done.
I saw the white Cizeta at Canepa Design a few years ago and was shocked that I would ever see one in my entire life. I was as amazed at the width of its haunches as you were. It sure was fun seeing you learn about this car and its crazy engine.
I remember reading about this car in Car and Driver or Motortrend back in the 80's. I never realized that Giorgio Moroder was affiliated with this car. You learn something new every day from Iain's channel!
This is incredible! It'll probably never happen, but I'd love to see and hear a Cizeta in person one day. Been fascinated by these cars ever since I read about them in books and magazines as a kid.
Requiescat in pace, Messere Zampolli. I had never heard of these cars, apart from very briefly in Gran Turismo. What a stunning piece of kit. And what an amazing person to put it all together. Thank you for this great video!
The heartfelt warmth of all individuals in this encounter is comforting to me. Thank you Iain
It's a privilege to watch a video, can't imagine the feeling of being there. Simply spectacular!
A great, unique material... What a beautiful, respectful conversation of experienced engineers. Currently, Mr Tyrell, you do the best job among engineering-based retro supercars channels. There is some magic in you stories, and in you beautiful english that I enjoy since the beginning of Tyrrell's Classic Workshop :) Wish you all the best - thank you very much !
I'm 50 now and remember these in Top Trumps and magazines when new. Incredible opulence pushing the limits as far as possible. I remember the story also, the Diablo ended up looking quite similar, albeit a little less exotic, if thats possible.
This has to be one of the most spectacular cars, period. 16 cylinders, quad pop-up headlights, celebrity origins... Canepa restored one not too long ago. Great, great car. I hope there will be a few more completed in the future.
And again, Mr. Tyrell is writing another piece of CZcams history.
Thank you so much for this absolut fantastic content. I am blown away from this incredible view inside of the engine. Hope to see more of this amazing piece of art!
I think my suggestion here would be to contact someone with stereo lithography equipment, and scan all the engine, exhaust, crankshaft, heads and smaller parts, car frames, cars in various stages of assembly, and his personal car when fully assembled. This would preserve for posterity all the parts and their assemblies in 3D, so that ANY part could be reprinted in 3D and used to re-manufacture those parts at a later date if necessary.
I visited this location in 2007, and met Mr. Zampolli - a great man, who is sorely missed!
Wow! Never thought I'd see this car again
Can’t wait to learn more about this mystery machine.
Utterly astonishing sculpture of engineering. These deserve to live and breathe and I can't think of anyone more suited to nurture them through the process.
The Cizeta Moroder V16T was always one of *those* car-nerd cars, in the best way. Up there with the Aston-martin Bulldog, almost as mythical as a unicorn. Seen in one or two glossy books, but never seen in the real world, you'd chat about it with your mates in hushed tones. I think at one point half my stash of obscure car facts concerned these cars! Fingers crossed that someone takes on both Claudio Zampolli's own car, and his workshop stock. Hopefully it won't just disappear into a closed collection, never to be seen again. In the rarified atmosphere of supercars and ultra-expensive metalwork, where $100M cars are almost everyday machines, actually owning this car would put you at the top of a very premium tree.
That was great. Bob seemed like a top bloke too.
That engine, what a marvel ! Thanks Iain.

Gorgeous car in every way. The engine is something only you could truly appreciate. Bob is a real stand up guy. You were a kid in the candy store! Longass flight.
Fascinating video as always. I remember reading about these V16Ts in Car Magazine in 1989/ 1990 and always wondered what became of them.
As a child, I hoarded these with avarice. I would scour car boot sales and second hand shops for them. Car was always the best, I remember that mirror writing, I used to copy it. I remember the Cizeta edition, I think the car was white. I also got Classic & Sportscar and Classic Car.
Yes I had that issue of "Car" magazine, January 1989, and the headline said the Cizeta Moroder V16 should be the new Countach, because that was shortly before the Diablo came out.
I first saw a copy of Car magazine in the late 60s on a news stand; bought it and took out a subscription that night. I have fond memories of reading about British kit cars and other sports cars. Their write up on the 7 liter Iso Griffo really stands out in my memory.
Incredible machine. Just the apex of modern supercars, the likes of this will never to be surpassed.

6:24 I love that this car has the vertical intakes, rather than the thin horizontal strakes a la Testarossa that I've seen at least one car had (I've heard it was a prototype design, but don't quote me on that.) While it wasn't exactly ugly, I don't think the horizontal fins really suited the car's overall feel. 👍
It’s got a mix of Lamborghini styling and two lambo V8 engines stuck together along with the testarossa horizontal fins 😮
