    You gotta be careful which area you move to with multiple complexes in close proximity to each other. There can be conflicts between the young people... ie: fights, shooting,etc. Don’t be lulled into a false sense of security with the gates.

    I’m from the Chicago area. I grew up in the south suburbs and lived in the Hyde Park and south shore area for 6 years before I moved to Houston in 2012. The type of apartments you’d see in Houston are more like what you’d see in the suburbs or the luxury apartments in Chicago. It’s definitely available in Chicago but you’ll pay more for it. But the suburbs of Chicago are a lot more affordable. Houston seems to be the opposite, suburbs are more expensive. As for parking, although you don’t have to park on the street most complexes are very strict about parking in their lot. You’ll still deal with towing issues and get a notice on your car saying that they’re going to tow it for things like flat tire, expired registration, etc. For me Houston more comparable to living in the suburbs of Chicago. Although I never experienced towing issues with apartments in the suburbs of Chicago. They didn’t monitor the parking that hard. But I spent most of my time living in the house I grew up in Illinois. So apartment living in general was different to me.

    you definitely have to read the reviews on pest control because the older and cheaper the apartment is the more likely you're going to experience roaches. And unfortunately, if one of your neighbors is not very clean, they're going to have pest which will keep coming into your apartment as well.

    There are still many apt complexes here that lack a walk-in closet, patio or balcony, gym and washer/dryer. I moved from one in Feb, it's an older community (very well maintained) and l just found out they went up by $220 for the size l was in. Makes no sense to me because there are no updates in that complex, only the location is really good and it's safer than many.
    Also, don't depend on management to tell you if they flooded. Try to find a resident who's been there for a while. That's how l found out that last apt l was in flooded. Management told be no but a longtime resident told me they did.

There are a lot more job opportunities and rental opportunities out here and it feels less crowded so def pluses! I think people in Houston might be a littler nicer from what I encountered but there isn't really a whole lot of southern hospitality in the dfw. Weather isn't too bad. Summer is hot. Winter got a little icey but it was cool. Just some feedback for my CA people! Oh yeah and the Bbq... the best!

    I don’t like all of those generic, modern complexes. It has no character. But being from NY and living in Chicago I can see how Chicago landlords also compete and are actually kind of desperate. But I think Chicago apartments are much nicer. The architecture is way better in Chicago. But what you’re saying doesn’t completely make sense because Chicago has plenty of balcony apartments. I feel like 70% of the city has balconies. D.C. has a lot of those complex buildings as well. It’s like living in a mall. Chicago is the last city where you can find apartments with a living room and dining room and a separate kitchen. Most apartments nowadays don’t have a dining room and the kitchen is in the living room. Also, I live in Chicago and I was required to get renters insurance.

    Apartments in Houston are mostly gated but that does not ensure security because lot of complexes gates don’t work properly. I feel safer in Chicago area vs. Houston because the crime here is on another than Chicago. It’s not just people shooting each other like Chicago but more crazier crimes, less police patrolling. Houston 👎🏽

      What part of Chicago you from that makes you feel safe?!😭 cuz that’s one I’ve never heard come out anybody mouth. But I was born and raised on the southside so maybe getting caught in drivebys while walking is just my experience💀🥴

    • @christa3224
      @christa3224 Před rokem +1

      Massive roaches, also known as "palmetto bugs" or "water bugs." They are everywhere, doesn't matter how rich or poor you are. Spraying only does so much, because they come inside looking for water (hence "water bug"). Welcome to the gulf coast.

      @@smw372002able Houston has outside roaches that can get inside even in nice complexes especially if you live in the actual city. It has nothing to do with keeping your apartment clean. That’s why every complex requires “pest control.”
