Best line of this great movie... "They call this war a cloud over the land, but they made this weather and then they stand in the rain and say shit its rainin'! " So true about the messes we make in our own lives!
I live in Western North Carolina, and though I don't speak like this myself... Yes, there are those who do, especially high up in the mountains. She did an amazing job!!
Just two scenes with Rene Zellweger in this movie would reveal to anyone that Rene is one of the finest actors of her generation or any generation. The only time I've heard a whole theater audience breakdown in tears and sob.
Renee's performance in this movie was just spectacular. You associate her with being Ruby and not Renee Zellweger, which is what acting is meant to do. She put her whole self into her character. Love this movie.
I think people should focus more on the content of this movie, or any movie for that matter, rather than criticizing an actress's made up accent. Clearly she doesn't speak like this herself...and all the while she present a great performance and maintains an accent she is unfamiliar with? I think whoever criticizes her for this is missing the point. Sure you people from these parts I the county can pick up an phony accent, but to other..like me here in Texas, she put on a great performAnce
Funny, her character is talking about the civil war, but in 2003, she was also talking about the war in Iraq. Now the same people who made those wrong decisions are shouting "shit it's raining!" and people are looking for their umbrellas again. Pay attention people!
The movie was dull till Renee's character showed up and got things moving to what counts no matter what is going on around you. Ruby brought with her a homespun perspective of war while she countered the effects bravely living the useless suffering caused by other people's bad ideas. A lot of women living in today's financial disaster could use her as a role model as we suffer in the financial hardship brought to us by the stupid men elected to care for us. Renee totally deserved her award.
I've wanted to watch this movie for quite some time. For one reason or another, it just didn't work out. Until I find myself in possession of this movie, thinking with my luck it's be scar arched and unwatchable, I tried it. Looking back (after watching it) it was a beautiful movie, to say that it was quality in every aspect (not like many movies nowadays). It's a story of love, torn apart by war, life and evil. Through it all, they fight to be with one another. Great characters (except the Joker-like Bosie). A few unnecessary scenes and lines that take away from the story and potential of its greatness, but other than that it's almost perfection. A movie I'd definitely re-watch, but hesitate to keep. If you enjoy a struggling romance or sad films, this might be the watch for you. - MajestikReviews
@oscarlover100 I felt they left strong impressions. But Zellweger was clearly defined in her short time on screen. That helps a lot when distinguishing.
Do you think Nicole Kidman did a good South Carolina accent and Jude Law the North Carolina? Neither of them are from here, but Renee Zellweger is. I think Renee was going for the more colloquialism than accent. Her acting was spot on. Maybe you don't hear it but I do. My family is from KY, WVA and I have lived nine years in North Carolina. Accents are different even across North Carolina.
The one that surprised me the most was Giovanni Ribisi. Wow. Renee Zellweger did a great job in this, much better and more believable than Bridget Jones.
@Outinsider And no disrespect or anything, but Kidman didn't really give a full leading performance. I think her role can be considered lead, but I don't think that she carried it from start to finish like many leading performances do. If that's what you were trying to say. I'm just trying to have a friendly debate.
@TheSuppActress Oh that's an interesting year! Ingrid was great. Quite great, actually. But I haven't seen Double Indeminity yet, so I'm not sure if Ingrid will still be my pick. Did you see my profile on Signourney?
@outinsider Yes, but I think that it should be reconized by performance alone. Like, if someone recreates a role they did on stage, their performance should be judged by the performance alone, not if they had done it before. I thought that Julianne gave a very subtle performance and even though she didn't have a lot of dramatic moments, she had a lot to do internally
@oscarlover100 I felt that if Anne went deeper or at least offered something really challenging to play, the Award might be hers. The Judy Garland biopic might be her best bet.
@oscarlover100 Well, they are what they are every year. I'm in the theatre profession, and I know how hard all actors work, and that the Academy in the acting categories are voted on by the Actor's Branch for which the other branches follow suit, via by their peers. I will have to see the nominees and see what their peers see.
@outinsider I thought she was good, but I felt that Julianne Moore gave a performance for the ages. One of the best I've seen. What did you think of her?
This part of the movie to me describes every terrible person who ever wanted to start a war for the wrong reasons. Problem is, theirs rarely a reason good enough to start a war.
@oscarlover100 Oh, ha. Well, I really liked Crawford's performance and I think she'll be your pick! Could you make a video for Olivia Dehavilland in The Heiress?
@oscarlover100 I saw Far From Heaven and Julianne Moore gave a great performance, but its conventional, already recognized. The Academy recongized Dorothy Malone for Written On The Wind, and even though she was against the type of the usual Sirk films, the main female character didn't get recognized because she isn't doing anything much, and a leading female needs to have much to do. Does this make sense?
@outinsider Oh, I really liked her too. But I think that Anne Hathaway should have won. I thought she created a real, honest character who was very unlikeable, but I felt a real connection with her. What did you think of her performance?
@oscarlover100 Having watched The Reader, and being personally affected by Kate Winslet's performance, I can say that it was richly deserved. I understand that you are trying to have a friendly debate. That's great you want to keep it friendly. I do too, but I haven't been getting your responses in my emails and all I have been getting is BitchErica1's tirades.
@outinsider Well, when I watched this scene again, I thought Zellweger did a little better, but it's just too over done. What did you think of her competition?
Cold Mountain is in Western North Carolina, which is where I've spent my entire life. It's not in North Georgia. And I can guarantee you that no one speaks like this. I've never heard such an awful attempt at an Appalachian accent. This garbage hurt my ears. It seems to me you've no idea what you're talking about.
oscarlover100 I think you miss the point. This movie was a homage to 1940s and 1950s cinema. Zellweger wasn't just playing Ruby, but also paying tribute to the likes of Agnes Moorhead, Celeste Holme, Thelmer Ritter, Eve Arden etc
I politely disagree. I thought her performance was incredible. Total scene stealer. And her accent sounded so much like my grandma's that it was like watching her as a young woman on screen. Blew my mind. I couldn't believe it. It's one of the only movie theater moments I've had where people were applauding during the movie multiple time and it was all down to Renee's character and her acting. She made us all laugh, cry, and applaud. I'll never forget it.
One of the worst performances in the history of cinema. I can see this performance in any community theatre around the country... and that may be an insult to community theatre. Horrible, horrible, horrible- and you should all be ashamed of yourselves for praising it.
Best line of this great movie... "They call this war a cloud over the land, but they made this weather and then they stand in the rain and say shit its rainin'! "
So true about the messes we make in our own lives!
She was the best part of the movie. Killer performance.
My favorite part of the movie. =) She totally deserved that oscar!
"If I cry one tear for my daddy I stole it off a crocodile."
What an incredible line! My favorite quote from this movie.
I live in Western North Carolina, and though I don't speak like this myself... Yes, there are those who do, especially high up in the mountains. She did an amazing job!!
She stole this movie and deserved that Oscar.
I adore Renee's performance in this film. It shows her huge tranformation for that character.

Whoa!! I got goosebumps especially when she said "IT'S RAINING!"
well-deserved to win an Oscars... well-deserved..
Just two scenes with Rene Zellweger in this movie would reveal to anyone that Rene is one of the finest actors of her generation or any generation. The only time I've heard a whole theater audience breakdown in tears and sob.
agreed!
One of my favorite quotes " they stand in the rain and say sh%# its raining!"
Renee truly deserve the Oscar.. ^_^
I HAVE TO SAY THIS IS SUCH A PROPHETIC LINE WITH SUCH TRUTH AND IT COULD STAND TODAY !
Excellent scene. Very well done, Rene.
Renee stole the show in Cold Mountain and she deserved the Oscar she won for it.
Renee's performance in this movie was just spectacular. You associate her with being Ruby and not Renee Zellweger, which is what acting is meant to do. She put her whole self into her character. Love this movie.
One of the best lines, in an absolutely wonderful movie!
great movie wonderful dialogue
Best scene in the whole movie and there were a lot of good ones.
Now its so recent
She is Smart , very talented, and So Beautiful! I Love her smile !
My favourite movie.
Well this and Children of Men.
I can't see Renée in the movie but a new persona and she is Ruby..😂 damn Renée Ur my cutest crush ever!.. 🥰 beauty and talent! ❤️
That is the best line in any movie...it so applies to more than just the civil war.
I stole that tear from a crocodile… ♥️♥️♥️
Excellent performance, oscar deserved. I think also Jude Law could have won the oscar for his performance in this film.

she is from the south Texas Girl
Yeah ppl are dragging Nicole’s accent not hers.
Funny, her character is talking about the civil war, but in 2003, she was also talking about the war in Iraq. Now the same people who made those wrong decisions are shouting "shit it's raining!" and people are looking for their umbrellas again. Pay attention people!
+outinsider WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOA! SOOOOOOOO DEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP!
this was a great movie
My favorite scene
Best line of the movie.
Amazing.

I agree, I'm not a huge fan of Renee but this role was just great! Well deserved!
one of my favourite scenes too! Rennee Zellweger was divine in Cold Mountain. very deserved Oscar.

I want to be like Ruby when I grow up.
@oscarlover100
I felt they left strong impressions. But Zellweger was clearly defined in her short time on screen. That helps a lot when distinguishing.
yay Lumbee!
@outinsider Just wondering, but what are your general thoughts on the 2008 Best Actress category?
@oscarlover100
Correct. I consider the Oscars to be one big company dinner in that regard.
@nightshade7206 Can you state her exact line, please? Thanks!
Do you think Nicole Kidman did a good South Carolina accent and Jude Law the North Carolina? Neither of them are from here, but Renee Zellweger is. moorek1967 thanks for that. renee was great in this, IMO.
@outinsider Off-topic, but how would you rank the 2002 Best Actress nominees?
The one that surprised me the most was Giovanni Ribisi. Wow. Renee Zellweger did a great job in this, much better and more believable than Bridget Jones.
@oscarlover100
I thought she left an leading impression worth noticing.
0:51
@outinsider Oh, okay. The acting branch just nominates the actors though and they all get to vote for who wins. At least I think so. Am I right?
Literally what's going on in the world
@oscarlover100 I'm just going to guess what year you're going to do next: 1940?
Sounds like today
no wonder she won an oscar for this role huh? :)
@outinsider Oh, that's good! I think that 2008 was a much stronger year then 2009, for Best Actress. What are your thoughts on the 2009 race?
@TheSuppActress Off-topic, but can you do Best Supporting Actress 1999 on your blog next?
@Outinsider And no disrespect or anything, but Kidman didn't really give a full leading performance. I think her role can be considered lead, but I don't think that she carried it from start to finish like many leading performances do. If that's what you were trying to say. @oscarlover100
I felt that if Anne went deeper or at least offered something really challenging to play, the Award might be hers. The Judy Garland biopic might be her best bet.
@Jarred Knox That is ironic, considering Anne did have more of a resemblance than Renee did.
Renees eccant is so funny in this movie xp
@oscarlover100

@outinsider I thought she was good, but I felt that Julianne Moore gave a performance for the ages. One of the best I've seen. What did you think of her?
Not as good as Renée's
This part of the movie to me describes every terrible person who ever wanted to start a war for the wrong reasons. Problem is, theirs rarely a reason good enough to start a war.
Shit, it's raining!
HALLELUJAH!
@oscarlover100 Oh, ha. Well, I really liked Crawford's performance and I think she'll be your pick! Could you make a video for Olivia Dehavilland in The Heiress?
@oscarlover100

Does this make sense?
@outinsider So you didn't like her in Rachel?
The accents in this movie and the anecdotes.... =_= *is from the south* yup they got them down pat.
Loved this movie.
It's supposed to be North Carolina, not eastern KY. My family is from KY and I have lived in North Carolina, the accents are different.
Some wise person said Ruby was Granny Clampett when she was a young'un.
True as possum innards floatin in bacon fat.
@outinsider Oh, I really liked her too. But I think that Anne Hathaway should have won. I thought she created a real, honest character who was very unlikeable, but I felt a real connection with her. What did you think of her performance?
@oscarlover100
Nicole Kidman number one of course. She dived into Virginia Woolf like a swimmer in a pool.
Maybe they spoke like this way back in the 1800s?
Why did she win? For this scene. OScar snobs look out, outinsider is alive and well!
@oscarlover100
Having watched The Reader, and being personally affected by Kate Winslet's performance, I can say that it was richly deserved. I understand that you are trying to have a friendly debate. From someone named "nattydredz7" hmm pardon me if I don't put too much stock in your opinion.
The movie is long and boring then insert Ruby Thewes. The movie turn something interesting.
@outinsider Well, when I watched this scene again, I thought Zellweger did a little better, but it's just too over done. What did you think of her competition?
Brexit

Awful performance! And an over the top scene! Holly Hunter should have won! But Shohreh, Patrcia, and Marcia would have all made better winners.
oscarlover100 I think you miss the point. This movie was a homage to 1940s and 1950s cinema. Zellweger wasn't just playing Ruby, but also paying tribute to the likes of Agnes Moorhead, Celeste Holme, Thelmer Ritter, Eve Arden etc
this movie was horrible
Worst performance to ever win an Oscar. She should have won a Razzie instead.
I try to be fair but she is just not believable in the role. She is overacting throughout the film.
I politely disagree. I thought her performance was incredible. Total scene stealer. And her accent sounded so much like my grandma's that it was like watching her as a young woman on screen. It is called acting yet she is a southern lady who won an Oscar for her performance.
You are so wrong. Renee gave an awesome performance!!
