      The main problem in football is the complete lack of respect referees get from players, coaches and fans. On the field they are the boss. Show them the respect and they will naturally get better. How? More people, a better quality of individual, will want to do it so there will be a bigger pool to choose from and the premier league will get the best. But who wants to turn up on a Saturday to be called a wankaaaaaa for 90minutes and zero gratitude from press, press conferences or comparative pay. Or at grass roots run the risk of being physically attacked. Or in Colombia shot. A referee salary should start at the highest paid footballer salary. Would revolutionise application.

Football in the last few years has started going more down the direction of rugby - focused on obscure technical rules and endless labouring over getting decisions exactly right. I miss the days when handball had to be deliberate, not some convoluted and subjective call that will never be consistent between refs.

    Ange, the king of common sense. As he says there are already cards (Yellow/Red) in place just use them. Looking at it I think these people making the decisions are trying to take the responsibility away from the ref. That may sound silly as the ref has to show the card. The thing is rather than sending a player off he sin bins them for ten minutes. I'm with Ange, why are we trying to implement rules and technology from other sports? Here in Australia VAR was being used in a number of sports a long time before Football introduced it to the game. Whomever said it works great obviously had never watched an NRL or Cricket match in Australia. Just like VAR in Football VAR more often than not gets the decisions wrong and destroys the flow of the game. Ex players and pundits are dumb founded by the VAR decision making and often call for VAR to be scrapped. I hope for the future of Football common sense prevails and we leave the game alone. If they want to change for the better then support the referees, that is back their decision whether it be correct or not. Teach players to respect the referees decision and come down hard on those who don't. Whether people like it or not with the man in the middle we have no game. The game did just fine before technology came along albeit refs are now fearful of making decisions for being abused by players and managers in the carpark after the game.

    • @khpa3665
      @khpa3665 Před 3 měsíci +1

      You're right about taking responsibility from the ref, and it's not even what the refs want: VAR was demanded by clubs and opposed by refs. Let the refs do their jobs. And like you say, enforce respect of them and their decisions. One rule you could import from rugby union is that only the team captain can approach the ref. Definitely sanction clubs and coaches who come after the ref after the game, like has happened a couple of times this season.

  • @jimhim585
    @jimhim585 Před 3 měsíci +4

    Ange is right. For me it's about making the big decisions correctly but swiftly. Use the world cup tech - sensor in ball, lidr sensors, and 3D pitch is coordinated for: goal line (goal or no goal), offsides, is ball out of bounds. Those are quick, tech based decisions for all binary (it is or isnt, no inbetween). For big subjective decisions that has big implications for the game, ref is allowed a replay - penalties and red cards. For everything else, including yellow cards, free kicks, it's up to the real time discretion of the ref. Keep the game flowing for 45mins without stop and starts. VAR really does affect the fan experience and the stadium atmosphere of the crowds.

People are ranting and raving about this change because of the mess that was the last major change - VAR. But this is completely different, it helps clamp down on a really cynical and anti-football practise and leaves little up for interpretation - everyone can see when a foul is cynical but not dangerous.
    'It's another thing for refs to get wrong' - sure but that's a separate issue. And you're not going to get more people interested in refereeing if there's no measure to protect themselves from abuse, as now. It works in Rugby, let's try it for football.

    I don’t really understand his point about slowing the game down. Blue cards/sin bins seem to be intended to stop cynical fouls. At the minute, most counter attacks are stopped by a simple shirt pull or light foul. The offending player gets a yellow but it’s not much of a deterrent so teams do it repeatedly. That slows the game down and prevents goals being scored. Maybe the sin bin will prevent a few of those fouls and get the game flowing more, and bring more goals. That will speed up the game. Trial it. If it doesn’t work or there’s unintended consequences that make the game worse then don’t roll it out. I agree on VAR. It seems to be the worst implementation of video refereeing across any sport. It’s slow and seems to lead to more errors rather than less.

    Devils advocate here.... we didn't ask for VAR like this... we asked for goal line tech (good) and reversals of utter howlers.
    Couldn't blue cards be used to stop the tactical fouls that every team uses to stop counter attacks? because a yellow card isn't enough of a deterrent to stop teams doing it.

    It is exceedingly obvious to me why it is being added. What better way is there to fix a result than to put one team down to 10 men for 10 minutes? This is a way for them to get the results they want. Shameful.

    Not sure if blue cards will work, but I do think a yellow card is not a big enough punishment for professional fouls that stop breaks, particularly in the modern game where pressing and quick counters are so important.

    Blue cards would, as angle said, just make one side play super defensively for 10 mins 🥱

  • @WetSands
    @WetSands Před 3 měsíci

    I like the idea of blue cards. It works in Rugby, and to be honest, the players are a lot more respectful to refs in Rugby too. Perhaps this will lead to some greater respect from the players, to the refs, who experience a torrent of abuse from players in general, and it might start to change the culture for the better. I think it's a good experiment. I think people who don't want it, are just fearful of change, and not all change is a bad thing.
