Does Tai Lung Deserve A Redemption?

  • So one of the big comments I often see regarding Kung Fu Panda is that Tai Lung should have some sort of redemption arc. And it's not something isolated to Kung Fu Panda, as a lot of truly reprehensible villains have their ardent stans begging for a redemption arc. And Tai Lung is no exception. So today we walk through whether that is something that is even a slightly realistic prospect, and how it could go down.

    I hope he has a redemption arc, where he realises that he doesn't want to be the dragon warrior. And instead of chasing after dream that put on him by someone else he would look for his own destiny. I also would love it if he showed some level of respect for Po if they ever meet, like not a lot of respect but in a subtle manner.

      To be honest I'd be cool if he did get to become the Dragon Warrior in this movie since Po will apparently be moving up ranks and will no longer be the Dragon Warrior, so having Tai Lung achieve his main goal in life through redemption would be a cool idea. either that or have Tigress become the Dragon Warrior as she is clearly the strongest and most skilled of the five.

    I think a redemption is possible for Tai Lung and can be done under the right circumstances. I've seen it done with a couple of good Kung Fu Panda fanfics.
    The story 'A Different Lesson' and 'That's Why They Call It The Present' are good Tai Lung redemption stories. In both those stories Tai Lung survive the battle with Po and then work on redemption and rebuilding his life in some way. Making amends and fixing things with Shifu. In both those stories a great threat and villain appears and Tai Lung joins the heroes to put an end to it and saving the day.
    I think something like that might happen in Kung Fu Panda 4. Tai Lung might not be fully one hundred percent redeemed, but I'll settle for him patching things up with Shifu and Po calling Tail Lung one of the best Kung Fu warriors that ever existed and had the honor to fight both against and alongside with.

    I don’t agree with him dying to protect Shifu, because Shifu as a mentor and father set him up for failure. I want Tai Lung to value his own expectations as part of his redemption rather than rely on the expectations of others.
    I’d rather him maybe have his redemption end where he meditates alone with a peaceful life in a secluded place after his character arc. Maybe he shows up again way later to help whoever the new dragon warrior whenever all hope seems lost in their story and consider it a favor to Po before vanishing again.
    Or perhaps he completes his redemption by wanting to stay the spirit realm to live and meditate, like Oogway. Maybe he can play his own part where he tries to help other villians who are sent there let go of their anger.

    Okay, having now watched the video, death redemption is always a good solution. I can very easily see tai lung having to work with po now that he’s back to square one. Remember, po TRIED to help shen, the guy who full on genocided the pandas. Why didn’t he try with tai lung? I can see them spending more time together and tai lung gaining some perspective on himself. That’s what a spiritual leader does. Po leading tai back to a better place is a perfect three movie arc. Especially given po has to team up with shady people.
    But, if it ends with tai lung dying to save po or shifu, i think it works. Though, the rule i use for killing characters is, are there more stories you can tell with them or with them dead? With tai, i can see both. Unfortunate, his death stories have mostly been seen after the second movie and in the series.
    Overall, I find villain redemption arcs to be the most compelling stories. The story of people learning the error of their ways and striving to be better. After all, to err is to human.

      This is about villains/antagonists/general horrible people who finally face up to what they've done, especially if they try to pull the good ole "Dramatically Does One Good Thing To Redeem Themselves And Dies," but despite their best efforts they DON'T die. Like yes there's no easy way out for you, there's only the slow, awkward and painful process of learning to live with yourself. Of learning to live with the weight of your mistakes. You get a second chance regardless of if you think you deserve it. You get to try to make amends and do good. You get to live.
      This is also about every self-sacrificial bastard of a protagonist who puts themselves in harm's way again and again and again to a wildly unhealthy and unnecessary degree. See, there's something so compelling to me in the unspoken suicidality of repeated heroic self-sacrifice, and the thing about implicitly suicidal characters is that i want them to live. and that can be used to make a death so much more tragic and impactful - noble sacrifices and last stands certainly can and have been done beautifully - but there's also something special to me in seeing such a character make it. because you'd die for the people you love, yes, but would you live for them?

    First of all your opinion that Tai Lung killed some villagers when he was destroying the village does not mean that it happened, in the movie it is specifically said that he "devastated the valley of peace" if I remember the exact words correctly, and in the pictures shown we see him destroying things while the villagers are running away from him, and in the movie there was no mention of any killing of the villagers, just collateral damage, which would indicate that Tai Lung just destroyed half or most of the village, before running to the Jade Palace to get the scroll.
    Tai Lung was thrown in prison most likely for life, to be forgotten, and Shifu didn't even try to visit him, or do anything, he just hoped he wouldn't have to think about his son, with whom he blew it as a parent and as a master.
    In the movie when Po is chosen as the Dragon Warrior, Shifu is very visually upset, and he protests, and you can see the reaction from Tigress, as Tigress sees Shifu fight for her, because it seemed like she was going to be chosen, even though Oogway repeated many times that he was not wrong, and that he did not want to point at Tigress, and all the students as well as Tigress accept that they were not good enough, but Shifu continues to try to convince them that he will get rid of Po, and that probably in time one of them or someone else more worthy will be chosen as a Dragon Warrior.
    This shows how Shifu should have raised Tai Lung, like he raised Tigress, to teach them the discipline and self control, to accept their fate if they are not chosen, so that they don't have it planted in their heads that they are chosen, but that they might be chosen which gives them a goal in life, but not the whole purpose of their lives, and since Shifu was much colder with them as a master, he did not let his feelings blind him when he should see the faults and virtues in his students, but Tai Lung was treated as "The Chosen One'' from his childhood, and was forced to train to the point of breaking his bones, with the idea that he will become this great legendary warrior if he becomes as perfect a fighter as possible, and his ego was never discouraged, and from his point of view he is not doing anything wrong, he will surely become that legendary warrior because there is no chance he could fail in his mind, and then he was rejected and doesn't understand why, and Shifu didn't even say a word, let alone try to protest for his son, while he was trying his best for his team of five when none of them were selected.
    And being sentenced for life in prison, for no good enough reason in a prison inside a very deep mountain, immobilized from any physical movement, that will definitely increase your anger towards those responsible for denying you what you were promised since childhood, and to be released after 20 years due to coincidence and your own skill, it will be a sign to take what should have been yours, and not just forget about it, and try to start a new life somewhere else.
    Let me mention that Tai Lung's destruction of the village was not explained in detail, in the sense of whether someone provoked him in the village when he was very vulnerable inside, for him to burst out and attack them all, because he definitely did not attack that village out of the blue, just to vent his anger, and he didn't kill anyone for sure because it would be mentioned that he did, or mentioned at least in some way, and the only person he wanted to kill was the one who made him the person he became.

      it said he laid waste to the valley. It's honestly up to interpretation, but I can't see him being locked up for 20+ years after having just done some property damage.. Logically, there HAD to be loss of life...

    • @PetarSon
      @PetarSon Před 3 měsíci +5

      @@jadecoolness101 I understand your point of view on this, but I think it would be more logical to mention the loss of life for a couple of reasons.
      Firstly the villain of the movie becomes more scary in the eyes of the viewers, which increases the threat of his escape, and secondly, he didn't kill anyone in the movie except he tried Shifu at the end, now you can say that some rhinos died in his escape, but not really, since all the rhinos that died were killed by stones, because of the explosions that were collapsing the prison from the inside, since the leader of the prison ordered the destruction of the prison so that the prisoner would not escape, and those rhinos at the top level all survived the explosion, and why would I say that, I say that because our "messenger" was in front of the explosion and survived, so I would say that much more durable rhinos also survived.
      The last showing of the possible threat of death is when Shifu said that Tai Lung could have killed the Furious Five, but he didn't, and Shifu said this out of concern because he doesn't know what the prison has done to Tai Lung, but Tai Lung is very controlled throughout the movie and doesn't try to kill no one, but Shifu in the end.
      So I'm more sure Tai Lung was locked up because of what he was capable of than what he had done, because Shifu knows what he made, and knows that the trouble wouldn't end, Tai Lung would continue trying to steal that scroll.
      You can disagree with me if you want but this is my opinion.

      I agree. I feel like he was locked up for life because they feared him, not because he taken lives in his rampage. Aside from Oogeway, he was the strongest warrior in the village and easily take the scroll whenever he wants. Plus, Kung Fu Panda isnt scared to imply that there was death like in the sequel. So, if he did killed people, then we would know like with Shen. Another thing to keep in mind is that the setting is based on ancient China, so its not like punishment for crimes is as lenient as modern day America.

    Hey, Vegeta got a redemption arc, and Vegeta caused planetary genocide as a job. So, why not Tai Lung, a villain we never actually see kill anyone on screen. He even spared the furious 5 when he could have easily ripped their heads off. Then when he got the scroll, he was already on the verge of giving up, because he couldn't see himself, which could lead into a redemption arc. Not to mention, if shifu at least visited him in prison as often as possible, maybe tai lung would have soften up. Also, the writers changed Tai Lung's story before the film got released because it was too sympathetic, which to me is more evidence that he deserves a redemption arc.

  • @FoxsDumbSeriesMaker
    @FoxsDumbSeriesMaker Před 3 měsíci +6

    This is a very well thought out video and you made a lot of good points. However, there are some key things about Tai Lung that can also be noted. Brace yourself, for this is a long read!
    We don’t know for sure if he truly killed anyone in his past rampage. It’s possible that Oogway and Shifu just knew how dangerous he could be, given his potential and frightening power. This is especially the case if he saw how useless the Dragon Scroll would be to him, so they took extra precautions. He may very well have killed people, but it was never confirmed.
    Tai Lung also spared the Furious Five when he had a chance to kill them. He initially aimed to kill Tigress, as she tried to kill him, but after seeing how effective the Five were as a team against him, he gained respect for his opponents. It was suspected by Shifu that he used their beaten up bodies as a scare tactic, but it’s also possible that he spared them through honour.
    When Tai Lung encountered Shifu at the end of the film, he wasn’t immediately hostile. He took a moment to catch up with Shifu and expressed mild disappointment that he only wanted to fend him off. It’s possible that Tai Lung didn’t necessarily want to fight Shifu for the scroll if he didn’t have to (even though he vented out his frustration afterwards).
    This part is very important. Contrary to what many think, Tai Lung being refused by Oogway didn’t make him snap. He simply looked to Shifu for support, and was heartbroken to see that Shifu did nothing for him after all of that intense and mind numbing training over the years. That betrayal in his mind caused the snap.
    After pouring out his emotions to Shifu in their battle, explaining that he only wanted to make him proud and wanted his master to stand up for him to Oogway (again the movie really focuses on that part of the story), Shifu finally apologizes for his silence. Unexpectedly, this gets to Tai Lung, and for a brief moment he looks as if he’s going to tear up before toughening it out and aiming for the scroll once more. It’s seems that Tai Lung actually considered Shifu’s apology and may have even felt bad for his actions, but ultimately knew that he had come too far in his quest for power to give up the scroll.
    Po did actually try to help Tai Lung. He explained the meaning behind the Dragon Scroll and how there was no secret power. It was all about the individual. Keep in mind that Po likes to see the good in people. He even tried to give Shen a chance in the second film. Frustrated, Tai Lung didn’t listen to Po’s advice at the time and lashed out, only to lose to a big fat panda.
    Lastly, the aftermath of his defeat. It may have humbled Tai Lung after losing to someone as silly as Po. In the Spirit Realm, he also lost to Kai, further humbling him. We don’t know for sure if these defeats had any effect on him, but it’s possible that he thought over what Po said to him and why he lost. Maybe Po truly is the Dragon Warrior in his eyes now. There’s even a chance that he may have interacted with Oogway in this realm, and perhaps they made amends. Losing to the Chameleon in the upcoming film will also affect his psyche, I imagine. Perhaps some payback would be in order, so why not work with Dragon Warrior?

  • @Mario-us5xm
    @Mario-us5xm Před 3 měsíci +6

    Warning, kinda long but I go into detail on how I'd write it slgbnslfkgvb
    The way a redemption would work is so easy that it even writes itself because of the similarities I've seen between Kung Fu Panda and the series I'm about to compare it to. . . Tai Lung is Vegeta.
    He was quite literally born and groomed to believe he was an elite warrior, left to fight for someone else's bidding and turned to become a ruthless warrior because of it (the flashback shows he geniunely enjoyed kung fu, but Shifu's ambitions made him only focus on the role of Dragon Warrior). He believes he DESERVES to be the greatest.
    Then comes Po, a warrior that while he believes his own hype he works with others, is the underdog, shows that with hard work and training even he can stand against the elite like Tai Lung and come out on top (KFP 3 kind of damaged that message but eh, that's fitting with how DBS damaged that message too lol).
    Even if you look at the villains, Tai Lung fits Vegeta's role, Shen fits Frieza's racist paranoid ass that believed a prophecy someone from a race would kill him so he decided to commit genocide, Kai fits either Cell or Buu with his technique of absorbing other people's power to reach his perfect potential.
    So how do you redeem him? Easy, you don't. Don't make him Po's friend, make him his rival. We saw that scene on the trailer of Tai Lung getting his ass beat, make him go back to Po in anger, admitting that they can't beat the Chameleon alone and they need to fight her together. But Tai makes it very clear then and there that he isn't making peace with Po. He WANTS to become strong and earn the title of the strongest warrior not for Shifu anymore but for himself. They defeat the Chameleon together, their fighting style together is a "get out of the way, I'LL kill her" kind of thing where they're trying to one-up each other. And when they win I can see two scenarios.
    A) Po is the new Oogway, the valley saw Tai Lung fight with his life to save them and decide he can be a hero, and as a way for Po to promise him that the abuse of the previous masters will never occur again... the "new Shifu" becomes both Tigress and Tai Lung. Two teachers to keep each other at bay while also being the pinnacle of strength aside from Po.
    B) They do the whole thing, they beat Chameleon, yadda yadda yadda. At the end of the story though Tai Lung let's Po know that he'll be off to wander across the world like Oogway did a long time ago. Not to be evil, but to find strong opponents that truly challenge him because one day he'll want to be back to the valley for a rematch (they both smirk and acknowledge each other, all that corny shit).
    Only issue here is that Zhen (worst character in KFP don't @ me) is now here so that seems to be more of a "passing the torch" trope. I AM HOPING the theories of Zhen actually being the Chameleon in disguise are true but that's copium.

      100% agreed. I always saw Tai Lung as the Vegeta of Kung Fu Panda. Vegeta did so many awful things and killed innocents over the years (people who haven’t been resurrected, btw), yet he changed for the better. It took time, but eventually he learned to be a better person. Heck, many people consider him to be more of a hero than Goku. I find it strange how people think Tai Lung doesn’t deserve redemption when we don’t even know for sure if he killed anyone at all. There are those in fiction that have done far worse and still redeemed themselves. I don’t see why the same can’t be done for Tai Lung, even if he doesn’t become a full on good guy.

    if sifu had actually realized he fucked up and trained someone to be a proud warrior that only knew violence(plus had anger issues that needed to be worked on) and oogway explained what he ment when he was denied he could of been fixed. probably would of had to stun him after the initial anger outburst but throwing him into a pit to never be seen again instead of helping him become a better person and sifu owning up to his mistakes was what really made him into a villain
    TLDR: tai lung was right, sifu was the real villain, even if tai lung became a villain in the end too
    oogway is also kinda a villain but he didn't do nearly as much wrong as sifu

    The most interesting thing about a Tai Lung redemption for me is the HOW. It's not something I have thought about too much, but most of the intrigue comes from how they could pull it off and do it well. If that direction occurs I'm like "Oh, all right, I'm on board, let's see how it plays out". The most I could think of is Tai Lung being more humble after his multiple defeats by other characters. The way I see it. Either he will end up back in the Spirit Realm somehow or he will scurrying off unnoticed after The Chameleon is dealt with and he starts a journey of self-discovery and attempting to find a new life purpose. So basically an enternal wanderer/drifter with any past relationships he had irreparably damaged. I can't really see him and Shifu reconciling. I have my doubts that they'll even interact in the film.
    What holds Tai Lung back is definitely his anger and impulsiveness. For example, despite knowing that contents of the Dragon Scroll were not what anyone expected, in his rage tried to hurt Po. He already saw what was in the scroll so there was no longer a point in fighting and chasing, yet he still took his anger out on someone, he used his skills to dominate and brutalize others for solely selfish reasons. Perhaps Tai Lung is just on auto-pilot at this point, secretly knows he's too far in the hole.

    Shen was my favourite KFP antagonist and I was really hoping that he would get a better ending, and was disappointed when he didn't. I liked Tai Lung too, so a redemption would be nice, though I have no idea how they're going to make it work without it seeming forced. I also didn't feel like Shi Fu really showed much concern when Tai Lung supposedly died in the first movie. Idk, it all just felt so sad to me. Hopefully he would show more emotion if Tai Lung comes back in the upcoming movie.

So if they do any redemption for him it will definitely be a "redemption equals death" scenario as you mentioned. There's just no other route that would suffice.

    I suppose he is the least evil out of all the Kung Fu Panda villains but deserving a redemption isn’t the correct terminology I’d use. It’s earning one. It would be an interesting route to take but I don’t see any other redemption other than death as he brought terror to so many people. You cannot tell me he didn’t kill some of those rhino guards or villagers in his rampages. Sometimes people don’t change. Tai Lung doesn’t want to change. He already proved that.

    The way one could theoretically be possible is if he reflected on everything he had done and were to find regret in the dark path he took. Considering he's roaming the spirit realm with other deceased kung fu warriors, it's not out of the question that he may have thought about everything that led to his banishment to the spirit realm, considering there's really nothing else to do there. Whether this was the case or not, we will see when the fourth movie drops.

    A good ending can totally work to subvert what people think is irredeemable. The purpose of prison is to rehabilitate, there's no logical reason as to how Tai lung was expected to get that rehabilitation given his imprisonment. And virtually no person who got imprisoned there ever got rehabilitated.
    As for his redemption, if you run with the assumption people died, have him find a way to get to them and apologise somehow. Since he'd have been dead as well, and learn not Kung fu, but why Kung fu is important from the Masters around him and Ugway. Find out why he wasn't chosen, and to accept the circumstances of his life so he can move on.

    I thought tai lung was gonna get a redemption arc and team up with Po. Tai Lung could learn about Po's accomplishments and learn to respect Po. After Po defeats the chameleon, Tai Lung could go on his own journy, thus ending Tai Lung's on screen journey. It would also be cool that tai lung loosing chi would humble him and he he would have to listen to Po, gain new chi through out the movie and reclaim his lost chi. Then tai lung could earn the the title as the new dragon warrior. Plus, with Tai Lung experiencing evil and good paths would make him a great successor and teacher.

    A self-sacrifice would be the ONLY way a redemption could work for this character imo. Dude got told he had to settle for being a super skilled kung fu master instead of the most powerful being alive and decided to attack innocent people in response. There's really no coming back from that. Po even gave him a chance when he explained what the blank scroll meant, and you know what happened? He got violent again. A redemption that allows him to skip off and ignore all the awful things he's done would make me so mad lol

  • @8Kazuja8
    @8Kazuja8 Před 3 měsíci

    I think if you take away his power redemption would be fairly easy honestly. In a way it's his power but more specifically the path of getting there that corrupted him. I guess if you make him train to earn his power back in earnest, while reflecting on the path he took before and maybe even seriously considering why Po was better dragon warrior material than he was, a redemption would feel pretty natural. It's basically an opportunity to hit the reset button on his training, which would be an opportunity to teach himself humility, reconnect with his mentor/dad and develop genuine respect for the guy that beat him in his prime.
    It almost seems odd to call him irredeemable because his primary problem genuinely has always just been this shit attitude Shifu all but set him up to have. Make him develop out of the attitude and he'd be a perfectly okay dude. He even almost snaps out of it too in the first movie, when Po shows him what's inside the scroll, and he realizes that none of this was ever even worth it, before doubling down on being angry about it.

  • @rise.-mikey
    @rise.-mikey Před 3 měsíci

    The pride blinded Tai Lung, he's prideful of his strength and with his strength gone. What exactly is he? I think if he does end up going to a redemption arc, the one thing you suggested of this to feel natural would be if he did sacrificed himself for his dad to make up the pain and chaos he has caused at home just because he wanted the title of a dragon warrior.
    He was shocked to find out the scroll was empty and maybe this might bite him back in the movie, he could self reflect in the runtime of the movie and Po is exactly the candidate he needs for this. If he was always told that he never done wrong and was punished like this without proper communication then he needs someone to tell him what it takes to be a dragon warrior, it's not just brute strength and the ability to fight it's about responsibility as well and so much more. I don't mind a redemption arc for Tai Lung but I also don't mind if he doesn't get any. People can change if they are willing to change and if he doesn't do the work then he can't redeem in the end of the day.

      considering Oogway was stronger and very likely older, it's also very likely that conquering China wasn't even Kai's dream to begin with, he just went along with the dream of his mentor and brother..
      You can see how he literally decides what his goal is on a whim after he realizes no one remembers him..
      he's empty, he's literally living in the shadow of oogway..

  • @HenryLouis21
    @HenryLouis21 Před 3 měsíci

    Tai Lung could be redeemed, it’s not like Po didn’t try to help and redeem Tai Lung because he did when he opened the scroll to find nothing. Po offers him a chance at redemption by imparting the wisdom that there is no secret ingredients, that true power lays within him. Though Tai Lung didn’t except what Po had to say, he wasn’t killed or anything, he was banished to the spirit world. You’d think that after being defeated and humbled by the real Dragon Warrior, it would allow and force Tai Lung in the spirit world to have a moment of self-reflection and find a sense of inner peace and wisdom and consider Po’s words. Him returning to life could be him getting a second chance at life and deciding to become a better person, more wiser and this time a hero content that he cannot be the Dragon Warrior.

    I think they have already given us a way he might get redeemed: the loss of his strength by Chameleon.
    Tai lung is very strong, was praised for said strength & he himself trained more than possibly anyone else of his generation. But it also became part of the reason he was arrogant & entitled.
    So since the big bad pf this movie will take his strength, something we know also happened in KFP3, maybe he will not only team up with Po to get it back, but must also confront the idea that he isn’t the strongest even at his best and maybe even a new fear of imprisonment.

    There is one point I want to disagree with and that is the fact that he hurt anyone and the reason why I bring this up is
    1. Not only did they had a whole movie but they also had a whole TV series & it’s never mention that he harmed anyone. Like I understand keeping it PG for the kids but it was never oh tai lung is so evil because he harmed a bunch of people.
    it was always tai lung is so evil he wanted destroy the vally.
    This point is back up by the fact that since the 1st movie we have met more ruthless villain both in the TV show & other movie. Didn’t they say that both Kai & shin actually harmed others
    2. Watching the TV legend of awesomeness, it seem like they don’t have a judicial system like we do, in fact now that I think about it I don’t think they had prison prior to tai lung & didn’t they had to re open the prison in the show?
    So I can totally see them just giving people life in prison if they feel like they were worthy. Actually now that im thinking about it, most of the prisoner who are in prison don’t get released, it’s either they escape or they are just out for whatever reason.
    I think only 1 characters in the show was mention to be released from prison.
