What does the Bible say about Foul Language?

  • God is concerned about language because words have power.  Obscene language comes from a place that attacks God and His creation.  When we take the Lord’s name in vain, we corrupt a spiritually-empowered name intended for blessing. Our words are meant to build people up, not tear them down.
    Verses: Eph. 5:1-4; 4:29; Exod. 20:7
    Teacher: John Schoenheit

This is something that is so common today. Even with some people that call themselves Christians.

Thanks for putting this out. Everyday I want to learn Gods will for my life. I’m a wretch and Jesus saved me. Now it’s time to obey. Obey because I believe. Obey because I’m grateful. God give me wisdom and help me obey you!

I have a group of friends who have been catholic all their lives (I am too by the way). But recently they started saying things like the 'f' word and 's' word on a daily basis, a lot of them keep bringing up reasons on why swearing isn't that big a deal. And a couple of them are deadly smart. I'm fourteen and most of them are around that age too. Now, I live in australia, and a lot of them use the excuse saying it's aussie culture, which is ridiculous, and I see it as a shield against me that they use. Now I don't wanna lose their friendship but I also want them to stop swearing. What do I do?

I think you taught so well on swearing and what it represents for Christians, because a lot of people seem to downplay it and excuse it. I always look to Jesus's example and point out that he never spoke with foul language, but this gives a lot of meaning and backup to how that should look.

One of the very first things God will teach a new born Christian is to control what comes out of the mouth. There's power there to speak blessings and curses over your life and others lives. That was my experience. I know it changes from person to person depending on your situation. That is why we have a personal Savior.

Nice anchor emblem. I agree with what you said on language. Maybe like other issues of temptation and unruliness we can help ourselves by focusing on something more positive. If TV lowers you standards, then read a good book instead.

sanitized cuss words are euphemisms for cuss words....like darn for damn...or oh my gosh for oh my God ...oh Geez or oh gee... for oh Jesus...etc.
Euphemisms are no better...because they are idle words which Jesus condemned.

I recently joined a company where I'm supposed to transcribe (caption) every word that comes out of the caller's mouth (through voice-typing) including all sorts of words.. It's my job to caption each word as it is ( staying verbatim).
Is it bad if i caption cuss words as they are, if i don't mean them?

this didn't really touch on what I wanted to know, so here is my question. Say I'm with my best friend and I throw a little "you are looking ugly today" and he laughs because he knows I'm joking with him and don't actually mean it to hurt his feelings, and he knows what I expect him to do is do the same thing back to me, but all in good fun of course..........and another situation, say I'm playing a game of, say pool, and I miss my shot and say the more vulgar version "darn it" am I wrong for that? keep in mind I'm not mad at myself or anyone else, just a small disappointment that I missed my shot.

Born again Christians do not talk like the worldly people. They are a new creation. Even the occasion for this sort of conversation would not happen or would be stopped mid flight. There is not that kind of on going conversation between a son of God and a son of the devil. I dropped my devil friends a long time ago.

Is it bad to say Jesus christ when something exceeds our expectations, example, JC that kid can throw a fast baseball (90mph), or JC that house is huge, or JC that cake smells good. Like can we use it to show shock or amazement when we compare things?

I think it depends on when you're saying it and why. For example if you are frustrated and you say it, that's bad. But if you are happy with a miracle or something good and you say it maybe it is okay.
