Some friends and I were on a long drive and needed to stop. The only place around and open was a run-down looking gas station in a little town. Turned out they had a really nice bathroom. We complimented the clerk who turned out to be the owner. He was a former truck driver and made it a point to have a nice bathroom.

Another thing about konbini - they are everywhere. We had spent the night on a ryokan on Izu and took a short detour to Omuroyama (where we got to see Fuji without any clouds in the way) before continuing to Osaka. Our driver claimed to know the way so naturally we got lost. When we finally exited the forest we had to cross a river next to an abandoned hotel on a bridge not much wider than the minibus.
Shortly after that we came to a few houses, 20 or 30, and a Lawson. We were in the middle of nowhere and there was a Lawson!
After a bathroom and food break and the cashier showing that we were on neither of the two places on the map that we thought we followed his directions and we were on a highway within 15 minutes.

Besides the amazing food one of the things I thought was most interesting about Japanese conbini was being able to pick up a package there. On my 2nd trip to Japan I wanted a WiFi hotspot and I was rather surprised to lean i could have it sent to a conbini near my AirBNB and just picked it up the next morning. Other things I have seen and found surprising was some conbini have a spot to drop off your dry cleaning. And what about paying your taxes at a conbini!? I think one of the reason foreigners fall in love with Japanese conbini is it might be their first experience buying and eating something in Japan. Imagine, you catch the red eye and land in Japan after dark. You are unrested and blindly following your mapping app to your hotel or AirBNB. At last, you have arrived... but your stomach is grumbling. And then you see it. The only place that has lights on. Probably a 7i that only vaguely looks familiar to a westerner. (possibly a Family Mart or Lawsons.) You enter and everything looks.... different. Maybe you are unfamiliar with Japanese food... Maybe you just want your stomach to shut up! This was me on my first trip to Japan. I picked up what i called "The bowl of question marks" I took it to my AirBNB and heated it it. It was Delicious... It was spaghetti... but it also wasn't. It was Salty, delicious and full of CARBS! And this is how i ate my first meal in Japan and developed a life long obsession with mentaiko.

Oh that's great! Yes I didn't mention all of those things! Actually, I never used conbini mail service! I know some people use it, but maybe in emergency situation? Or maybe before they go to work! Also I had opposite feeling when I went to 7-Eleven in American airport! I was hungry after our flight to USA, so we went to 7-Eleven. I was so excited to see what kind of interesting foods American conbini has has, but I was so disappointed! Most of it was junk food! Like chips or some candies. I checked the refrigerator, inside only had drinks and salad! Some sandwich too but, they didn't look tasty at all! And hot food section had hot dog on a rolling machine! And some nacho! I was really surprised because as you know Nosh Japanese 7-Eleven has so many great foods! But even same company in America is completely different!

I've done a pretty decent job throughout my life avoiding public toilets in the U.S. But whenever I was forced to use one, I've had my fair share of "nani the frick!" experiences. Not all public facilities are bad in America, but a fair number of them are.

    • @killinglonliness88
      @killinglonliness88 Před 2 lety +8

It all depends on where you go. If you go to a small privately owned gas station, usually it's just like she explained in this video. A key attached to a giant cumbersome item so people can't easily steal it, and the bathroom is unmarked, small, and gross. BUT if you go to big chain gas stations like Sheetz, WaWa, 7/11, etc. here in the USA they all have FREE public restrooms! And they're usually very clean and well taken care of. But the BEST option for if you need to use the bathroom in the USA is either to find a truck stop off the highway because they have full showers, bathrooms, and food available, or if you're in a town and can't find a big name gas station, go to a restaurant, ESPECIALLY a fast food restaurant. They don't care who comes in to use the facilities, they won't even bother to say anything to you. Private restaurants might be a little more particular about using the restroom without buying something, but usually will still let you as they don't want someone having an incident on the floor.

Love hotels are tempting, but I’ve always dreamed of a night in Capsule hotels, and a cross country train journey. (But Japan isn’t a wheelchair-friendly country. 😓)
Big groceries are more established in the US, so while you can find hot dogs, burritos and Slushies in a 7-Eleven, they’re mostly for last-minute bread, milk and soda, and most of the takeout cuisine is in he “Grab-‘N-Go” deli sections of big stores.

I remember having one day I finished working in Murakami, Niigata and I had to take the last train back to Nagaoka.
I had enough time to buy some food at the conbini and get on the local train. I think I got on the train at 9pm and finally got back to Nagaoka around midnight.

I want to go to Japan so badly.
Bathroom advice for anyone visiting the U.S.
This is mostly in issue in two situations. On the highway and in the middle of major city downtown area. On the highway go for the larger establishments like truck stops. Larger buildings mean larger bathrooms and more staff to take care of them, plus they'll be free.
    Common ones include:
    -Loves travel stop
    -Pilot
    -Petro
    -Flying J
    -Travel Centers of America (TA)
    And region exclusives
If these aren't available go for gas stations that have a decently large building. Small locations may not have room for a bathroom in the building which is why they're found in the back and they may give people a hard time about it not being free. Since gas stations are very competitive with each other you're likely to have choices. Always go for the nicer looking one.
When downtown in a large city it gets tougher. If you want to use the bathroom for free, avoid fast food restaurants they're the most likely to give people a hard time about "customer only bathrooms". Your best solutions are shopping malls since those are not taken care by any individual business but the mall owners themselves. Places like New York may not have any shopping malls (they have 5th Avenue instead). Some grocery stores may have open bathrooms but they're well hidden.
    *Results may vary.
    Hope this helps

Knowing where to use bathroom in America feels like video game! It's like finding the hidden level! Almost everywhere in Japan, bathrooms are very clean! Sometimes you find dirty bathroom, usually in the public park. These kind of bathrooms have squat toilet. But most combini, grocery store, and train station have bathroom! America is hard mode, Japan is easy mode!

Here in the US the alcohol cut off time is around 12:00am. For bars it's around 2am. Some later if it's a private club. This is outside of pandemic restrictions.

If you're ever in Texas, go to Buc-ee's. The restrooms are super clean and they have so much at each station and Texans are very proud of these convenient super stores.

I would say half my food in Japan came from a Lawson, Family Mart, 7 11. Was great for the morning to mid day. Then get a nice lunch/dinner somewhere cool/fancy/cultural. Then coming back to the hotel Lawson again for a snack and couple beers.
I'd say in my 12 days in Japan this was a pretty reoccurring trend 🤔🤔🤔

We have a Japanese supermarket about an hour from me and I always go and spend a fortune on the ready-made foods. Especially the onigiri!! There's also a bakery, and a food court with lots of authentic Japanese foods. This will have to do until I can get to Japan. Someday 🥺

Growing up in Hawaii, for a long time, I didn't know that 7-eleven originated from Japan. Our 7-elevens in Hawaii are pretty good too, but it's usually run by old filipino ladies who make really good local Hawaii food, so a mixture of mostly hawaiian, filipino, chinese, japanese, and american food bentos to choose from. Before work, I'd usually pick up a spicy shrimp katsu musubi and after work, I'd pick out a bento for dinner. I work from home now, so I mainly just cook for myself now and lost weight, lol

I love Mrs Eats videos, they get more and more entertaining with each one. Especially that bread story, lol! But some advice for those not from America. If someone pulls that pistol on you in the store, do not (I repeat) do not throw paint on them. They more than likely will shoot the "tawagoto" out of you.

The drug stores in the US will usually have an isle with things like socks. It came in realy handy for me one time when there was some flash flooding while I was on the way to work. I got off the train and walked to the office and by the time I got there my socks were soaked all the way through. I was able to go across the street and pick up a pack of clean socks instead of sitting around squishing my feet in wet ones all day.
